Finally, a Wiiware game worth talking about. Cave Story is, in a word, amazing.

Judging from the screenshot, I'm guessing you're being sarcastic...right?
EDIT: Then again, according to Wikipedia:
"Cave Story has been very well-received by critics. 1UP.com described it as so massive that it rivals modern GBA Castlevania and Metroid games in terms of scope and play time. InsideMacGames ascribed the game's popularity to its polished feel, engaging storyline, and compelling artwork.
In the July 2006 issue of Swedish game magazine Super PLAY, Cave Story was given 1st place on their list of the 50 best freeware games of all time. EGM stated that the burgeoning Western indie game scene owes a tremendous debt to Japanese pioneers like Studio Pixel, whose freeware hit Cave Story proved that with sufficient vision, skill, and passion, a single developer can still craft a deep, compelling action game."
Maybe you weren't being sarcastic! I'm not familiar with Cave Story. What's it all about? How does it play? You've gotten me interested now.

I've never played Cave Story, but I've heard only very, very good things about it.

I've played Cave Story and I really like it. The best way to describe it's gameplay would be sorta like a mix of Megaman and a 2D platformer. It allows you to have a lot of (awesome) weapons that can be powered up by collecting what enemies drop. It has nice graphics, smooth gameplay, a good story, and lots of explosions.
You can find out more about it and download it here:

Thanks for the link. Cave Story looks better in motion. The screenshot I saw doesn't do the game justice.

Haha when I heard 'Cave story' I thought it would be a kind of semi history of Cave, the developer. Now that WOULD be worth it. A bullet hell anthology would be fun!

Cave Story...a game I heard massively incredible things about...I've heard it compared to Legacy of the Wizard too, along with the others above. Supposedly, the game with mad props and honor to 8-bit NES-style games in mind.
The only game I regularly listen to the soundtrack to but have never played the game of. The soundtrack is AMAZING. It rocks the 8-bit NES style all the way through, only a bit more awesomer and stuff.
I've been meaning to play this for some time but havent had the chance.
Wasn't there more than one version of Cave Story? Did the GBA or whatever version get canned? Is the game getting completely remade for Wiiware or is it just gonna look the same as the PC version?

As far as I know:
* There was a commercial PSP remake announced but ultimately ended up cancelled; however a freeware PSP port does exist.
* There was an independent GBA port planned at one point but it looks like it never got off the ground.
* There was an independent project to port it to the DS, but development got stalled.
If anyone thinks I'm wrong (which I probably AM) feel free to correct me.

I dunno, I'm not sure I understand the point of buying arcade ports on the 360. Why do people buy them? The roms are out there and they're FREE TO USE WOW GET WITH THE PROGRAM.
Or you know, some of us liked the game enough to support a commercial version with added content.

Geez, Poofta, no need to act like a dick. We're sorry we're not all as informed as you are. :P
Despite existing for quite some time as an excellent freeware game, Cave Story is well worth paying for. I've played through it a couple of times on the Mac, and will be sending a few Wii Points its way when it launches.

It's the only way he knows how to act. Don't feed the troll.
Cave Story is an awesome game. Unfortunately, it's (like the OP said) the only reason to justify WiiWare, and that's just sad. C'mon, Nintendo! More independently developed WW games, please!

God, you are so missing out. Cave Story is fucking fantastic and has some excellent replayability.
Sure, the PC & Mac versions are readily available as freeware and the homebrew port to PSP is available for anyone with a modded system, but I'm all about this game getting some more exposure. This thread is evidence that, despite being around for years as freeware, it's still an extremely niche game.
and that saddens me.

i dont believe in buying crappy ports for the 360 either.
however, when a game exists for free, in a better setting (psp). why would i spend the money to feed nintendo's pocket and have to use a lame remote. if i want to support the developers, ill donate to them. (and i have done so for plenty of projects)
but this? not worth it.
braid and castle crashers? absolutely
catan and carcasonne? damn straight
a several year old free game? nope.
cmon nintendo, step it up.
is it a wonder nintendo gets no respect from the majority of true gamers?

I haven't played Orbient, but isn't it almost exactly the same as Orbital for GBA?
Regardless of Orbient, that was just an exaggeration. I like Lost Winds well enough (though it's not amazing) and I am somewhat interested in the Strong Bad games, though I haven't played them yet.

Cave Story is very replayable. This version is stated to have new content and new features. I will gladly pay to re-play Cave Story with these new additions (whatever they may be), on a console for the first time. I'd much rather play it on a console than on a handheld, for comfort reasons.
And it's not like this is a full retail release. It's only going to cost five or ten bucks.

Cave Story looks nice and all, but did anyone notice that Sin and Punishment 2 was going to be released for the Wii in 2009 with integrated Wii controls? Am I the only one getting moist about that.
So, rbudrick's reference to Legacy of the Wizard is going to force me to download this sucker when it comes out. I'm going to have to get the Wii back from the clutches of my fiancee' and put it back on the good TV for this.

Practically. The graphics are a bit more detailed, but it's pretty much Orbital with reportedly 20 more levels. Which means it's probably one of my favorite games to come out this year. SO GOOD.
A friend of mine was just ranting about how good Cave Story is, so I'm definitely going to have to look into it when I come out. I'm historically wary of those Metroidvania style games, but perhaps this one will be good.

Yeah, I updated my original post shortly after reading more about the game:
"Maybe you weren't being sarcastic! I'm not familiar with Cave Story. What's it all about? How does it play? You've gotten me interested now."
I also posted a follow-up:
"Thanks for the link. Cave Story looks better in motion. The screenshot I saw doesn't do the game justice."
I'll give it a shot when it comes out.
By the way, there are already several great titles that justify WiiWare. See my list:

The PSP still makes for an uncomfortable controller IMO, even with TV out. And only the newer PSP's have that feature. And it requires an HDTV. And not everyone has a PSP anyway.

Cool, I'm glad to see the creators making money off of this, since they obviously put a lot of love into the original.

Upon the advice of people in this thread, I downloaded and started playing Cave Story this weekend. All I can say is: wow. This is quite possibly the greatsest NES game that never was. It is ridiculously fun in a very classic, very old-school way.
The boss fights are difficult without being impossible. The save points remove the stupid difficulty of old NES games that required you to memorize every level - but the challenge level is still there. The gameplay has just been polished to perfection to such a degree that it gleams like the precious gem it is.
Makes me almost wish I had a Wii so that I could get it and see what extra features are being put in the game.
