View Full Version : How do YOU store/display your loose Game Boy games?

Most loose cart games, you can put on a shelf and let them sit there and look pretty. However, Game Boy games have long been a different story. I don't really have enough games to warrant a hardcore display for mine yet, I just keep them stored in one of those Game Boy pouches they seem to sell with every system. It's worked fine so far...but I do feel as my loose GB collection grows, I might want a different solution.

So I was wondering, how do you guys display your GB games? Or do you just pack'em away and store them?

I display them in their boxes. Loose, it's probably best to keep them in a drawer in their clamshells.

Ah yes, sorry, I was referring to loose when I made the topic. Edited for clarity.

I print out covers from thecoverproject.net and modify ds cases to fit them.

So are you talking mass storage or a collection that's, say, under 50 or under 100 games? If you get to the point where you have a really large number of loose carts, I'd recommend just keeping them in a shallow drawer, like in a Yaffa or such. If you're talking a moderate-sized collection, my favorite way of storing loose Game Boy carts (without the clamshells) is in those plastic cases designed to hold a stack of sports/trading cards. You can find them at just about any kind of comic/collectible shop, and all you gotta do is make sure you get the size that's deep enough for the height of a Game Boy game. I find that they can hold 10 carts, and I think they look reasonably attractive. I also use the shallower cases to hold loose Hucards and memory cards.

I have a couple plastic drawers, I'll take pics. But each drawer holds around 140 carts loose. It's not the easiest to find stuff in, but I know the alphabet, so it only takes a few seconds to find what I need :) Sadly, it takes 3 of them to hold a full collection, and I only bought 2 of them...and they are no longer made.

I decided if I got a big collection of handheld games like that I would keep them in a 3 ring binder with the plastic pages for baseball cards.

Carts are in the small trays below the handheld shelf. I don't have enough of titles from any one handheld to make a big deal about showcasing the titles. But the little trays make it convenient to simply pick them up and flip through the titles as they're not wedged in tightly.

The only drawback to this - as I painfully learned two years ago (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91626) - is that it also makes it really easy for a burglar to nick your entire hand held library in one fell swoop. :frustrated:

I have maybe thirty or so and store them in an old metal My So-Called Life lunch box.

I keep all my GB stuff in a small plastic bin. I would like to display them, but I don't really have enough to make a worthwhile display and there isn't really a good way to do it. Although Pantechnicon's trays look like a really good idea.

I don't know how well that would work considering the thickness of Game Boy carts. I think once you hit 5 or so pages even the largest of binders would be stuffed full. Sure, you could always have multiple binders, but it seems like there would be more space efficient methods to store a whole ton of carts. Although, with the binders, you'd be able to flip through the games, seeing the titles, while a drawer would be much more of a pain.

I hear those plastic pages are great for big collections of loose Hucards, though. I imagine you could fit a ton into just one binder.

very nice, I like your set up of gameboy/lynx games. There is alot of them, don't take up too much space and they are easily accessible

Are those cases available cheaply anywhere? Looks like $2 each on ebay.

I have medium sized binders and they hold 8-pages each; 72 games a binder...it works very well until you have to add a bunch of new games and you want to keep them alphabetical...

Unfortunately this technique has thus far failed me in regards to Game Gear games.

You can get the DS cases from Nintendo's website 5 for $4.

edit: For GBA, I use DS cases and print covers. Still haven't come up with a solution for my other portable systems though I would like to see how the DS cases can be modded for regular GB games.

I keep my loose GG in some GG System Cases (those ones where it holds the system and the games), and as for GB, They are set nicely in a box. GBA, I only have 2 loose ones (1 is in a clamshell and 1 is a bootloeg version of Mario Kart), so I just set the loose ones right in front.

But yeah, my main handheld loose collection is game gear and I just keep them in GG storage cases.

Pantechnicon: How did you get your Sega LCD Games to hold up on the wall like that? I got a buttload of those and when I plan on moving out of my buddies place, I plan on displaying mine.

(Sorry, this is not threadjacking, I am asking how he is able to display handelds).

I keep mine in a drawer in their cases (and I even unbox complete games, just to save space- don't worry, I do keep the boxes!). Pantechnicon's trays look like a much better idea in terms of accessibility though so I'll have to do some investigating, as merely getting to some of my Game Gear/NGPC games can be a pain in the arse.

Double-sided adhesive squares. Nothing special. You can get them at Walgreens. If you intend to ever remove the games from the wall you can even get the squares with Velcro. Those are duplicates so they don't come off the wall. Bear in mind also that - velcro or otherwise - if you ever decide to remove the squares from the wall you'll probably pull out some paint as well.

The trays come from Hobby Lobby and cost something like $1 apiece. I like these because as my picture shows they accommodate a lot of different-sized handheld carts - including GG and NGPC - comfortably. I've even got my Virtual Boy carts in there too. Another nice thing about them is that they're shaped to be stackable. So if you want to store your games flat as opposed to upright then you have this option as well.

Great responses everyone..

@Pantechnicon, I also like your tray solution. I'm really surprised there isn't something like this officially licensed honestly.

@Aussie2B, I'm not too familiar with Yaffa (just Googled it), and it seems like it would work well, though I couldn't find a picture of a shallow drawer. The sports card holder seems similar to Pantechnicon's solution, good idea.

@SegaAges, don't worry, I'm also interested in general handheld collection displaying solutions--it's a difficult thing to find something that's functional and somewhat attractive.

I thought of this question originally because it seems like such a hard thing to do effectively (attractive + functional) for a moderate sized collection.

The binder solution is interesting and I think I've heard of it before with HuCards (though not for GB games), though I probably wouldn't do it for myself because I would like to have them "out" on a shelf or something.

A garbage bag, and yes that is being serious. heh I suppose I should do something about that before they get taken out with the garbage one of these days.

The best way to get DS cases and cases for any other systems or DVDs, and for free, is go to blockbuster and ask if they have any extra cases because they put all of the movies and games in special blockbuster cases they'll usually give them to you.

This may sound funny, but 32 oz. Velveeta boxes hold 20 (IIRC) Gameboy games in their plastic cases perfectly. And those boxes stack nicely. But you gotta like cheese. :-)

I probably should've been more specific since Yaffa makes practically a million different products, but I meant one of the drawer units like this:

http://www.yaffainc.com/products/itemized/803.html

I got one (except mine has one shallow drawer and one larger drawer), and I use to keep loose Genesis carts in the shallow drawer. It's the perfect depth for games that don't have much height to them. I don't know about anyone else, but it really bugs me to put games in a drawer that's much taller than they are. Then you just have all this wasted space and it looks awkward. The drawers are also not so huge that you need a massive collection just to fill one. Like I said, once you start surpassing 50 or 100 games, then they'd probably look better in a drawer like that than in smaller storage units, like the card cases.

Oh, and they come in lots of different colors. I have a white one with transparent drawers. Looks pretty nice. Better than the solid green one there on the site. :P

I tossed all of mine into one of those Gladware fake Tupperware things. Works pretty good, has a lid on it and everything.
