View Full Version : Worst LE Product in terms of value?

Has their been a bigger limited edition flop than the Halo 3 bundle with the cat helmet?

Are you talking value as in monetary worth or worst value in terms of overpriced for the contents?
If it's the former, I'd say the limited edition of Jade Empire. I love the game but they released the limited edition at the same time for the same price and I'm pretty sure I've seen more of that version anyway which makes the extra-less one 100% pointless.
I don't know about the latter.

Well if we wanna get technical the stupidity of Transformers: The Movie: Cybertron Edition (GameStop exclusive LE) probably takes the cake, that or any of the +10 buck you get a bonus dvd with a 20 minute making of on it games (Splinter Cell: DA, CoD2, CoD3 GOTY editions). If we're talking overproduced shit, Perfect Dark Zero. If we're talking big stuffs, I think that the Prey LE was pretty bad, that and once the cuteness wears off for the PipBoy Amazon bonus for Fallout 3 and the full sized Lancer bonus for Gears 2 they are going to be right up there with the Halo 3 Spartan Helmet in WTF did I buy this for. You can't even put it on your cat... I tried. I would have had to cut it up to even try and get either of my cats heads to fit in it and I wasn't willing to trash my helmet to make the cat a Spartan trooper.

I guess I meant a LE that there was a lot of hype for and made available at a super expensive price that nobody ended up paying and resulting in the LE being marked down significantly after it was first introduced. Has there been another example of this, or is Halo 3 the only one?

I'll just pick this thread to complain about the FFXII LE tin box. First off, I practically had to break the discs in half to get them off the spindles (actually never put the game disc back in it). Second, on my copy of the 'bonus DVD' -- one of the DVD links is busted. I think it was the music one. So when you click on it, you get some other interview, and thus can't access it through normal means.
Awesome.
The tin case is still pretty cool, on the outside.

The Madden 2005 Collector's Edition for the PS2 is up there. Sure, it has a little more bonus material than the "bonus DVD" LE's, but like pretty much every other old sports title out there, you can easily get a copy for a buck or less.

i'm going to nominate fable 2 for worst LE letdown of all time...
as for the halo 3 legendary packs, without giving any hard numbers away, the legendary pack stood for slightly less then 10% of the initial production run. As far as i'm aware, halo 3 hasn't had a second print run.
When you look at it that way, the helmet is still fairly rare... it was just stupidly expensive. At that point, it's a matter of scale. They sold a shit-ton of halo 3.

The original plan for Fable 2's LE was really cool, but good lord have they done a wonderful job of completely destroying the neatness of it in an incredibly short time.Too bad. I feel bad for anyone that actually buys the LE over the normal edition :(
I'd like to nominate Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor Limited Edition. The game was coming out after the massive success of Baldur's Gate II but was supposed to be the first true 3rd edition DnD-based game and it was a follow up to a beloved classic DOS RPG.
So imagine everyone's surprise when it turned out to be a steaming turd. The game constantly cheated on dice rolls, the the gameplay was dull, the story never really went anywhere and if you installed to any location other than the default directory, it'd wipe your C: drive when uninstalling.
Yea.
So the LE came with a typical throwaway DnD novelization of the game and a soundtrack (which was just as unawesome as the game and book) in a great big box for $60+tax. At least the box was cool, I guess?

I'm all for "unique" or limited stuff, but the Halo 3 debacle has shut me off of LE's probably forever. I waited in line for the honor of paying $129 for that sucker, only to see it stick around long enough to be clearanced for $49?!?! I'm still bitter about it.
I think the main problem with the Halo 3 pack is that while it is technically "limited", the production numbers were just too high. If they had set a number, say 5000 or 10000 and put that on the box, they would have sold much better, but I seem to remember that the numbers on the box were in the 100,000 range or more. Every game is limited - meaning that they won't be produced forever, so making a special edition of something should be just that - Special. And if you buy something for $129, it shouldn't be sitting on shelves at every Best Buy and Gamestop a year later for half that price. That's not limited, and it's not special.

The worst would probably be the Halo 3 Collector's Edition (A flimsy tin, a bonus DVD of the making of the game, and a price increase of $10. Not worth it, especially since most people wanted Legendary Edition so they could essentially have a paperweight shaped like Master Chief's helmet).

I think a good portion of the time, none of the LE bundles are ever really worth it. MGS4 and Oblivion has nice packages and bonus content, but every other LE I ever see seems to be garbage. Some of the PS2 Atlus LEs came with some alright bonus stuff too like the Growlancer games. I pretty much stay away from LEs all together. After MGS3: Subsistence LE and how much that retained its value, I went right for the MGS4 LE and preordered it. Final Fantasy XII LE had I cool case but was far from limited.

GTA IV has sweet content. As for me, I am an LE whore. If I plan to buy a video game, CD, or movie, it has to be the super badass edition. Thankfully I don't have a 360 so when I do, I can get all the LEs for cheap.

LE versions of games = Foil Covers for Comic Books of the 90s
Mostly Flash and very little substance
With that being said, another vote for Perfect Dark Zero, what a lame extra
runner up would definately be Halo LE...a $130 LE bundle that was overproduced with a compliation of all the movies from the HALO games....that has the polish of a youtube video.
I once was collecting LE editions, and found that I could spend more money on actual games that I could play. After all, that is why I got into the hobby in the first place.

Not a true LE in the sense we're discussing here. NIS simply tossed a copy of the game together with an imported Japanese figure-with nothing to note that it was a set or anything...just them mentioning it online to get people excited and pre-order.
Capcom's done that in the past with figurines and soundtracks.

Yeah, I bit on this LE last week. It's really a gamble more than anything. I'm hoping one of two things happens:
1) The 1000 units sell out before the game is launched. If the game is a hit, I have something that might go up in value.
2) The units don't sell out, so EA adds extras to the pot or drops the price of the pre-order to sane levels.
We'll see I guess. With my love of Survival Horror games, I couldn't pass this up.

As for the worst, I vote for Halo 3 cat helmet edition. I actually think the cat helmet is pretty neat (although useless). My problems with it are two:
1) The massive price reduction in a relatively short amount of time.
2) Why is the Halo 3 game disc case black?!? This pisses me off to no end. I keep it with my other xbox 360 games and it looks like I've replaced the case with a knockoff. Would it have killed them to put it in a green case?
Although this thread isn't about it, my vote for the best LE is Doom 3 for the xbox - I loved playing the original doom with an xbox controller :)

Well, today I went to GameStop and got the Helmet and packaging of the Legendary Edition FREE! I'll say it again, FREE! Apparently, Gamestop brass are tired of these monsters taking up floor and display space, so the managers were ordered to remove the games themselves from the LE's and to throw away the Helmets and packaging!!

All of this talk REALLY makes me miss dear old Working Designs. Most would agree that that company kicked the shit out of ANY other when it came to cool packages and value for money paid. Working Designs holds a special place in my heart. Victor Ireland didn't always make the best choices when picking games to localize but he did his best with what he had. The Working Designs flair made otherwise mediocre games entertaining.
Unfortunately, the company didn't seem to have the best business sense. It's a shame, really.

Oh god, the PS3 Stranglehold LE was a joke. First they hyped it up by saying that it was truly limited because it'd only have a six figure run (...oh god...) and then they hyped up the inclusion of Hard Boiled on the BluRay and sold it like it was going to actually be an HD transfer or some such.
Yea, that didn't pan out.

It's hard to say. Victor Ireland has been building a new company GaijinWorks (yeah, the name could use some work) but it doesn't seem to be doing much.
In it's heyday, Working Designs was doing something nobody else was. Concepts like collector's editions, high quality packaging, etc. were more or less unheard of. Even grammar checked translations were something special at the time. So WD made a name for itself. But little by little other publishers started doing similar things and were able to do it faster and cheaper. After a while, you can't put up with year+ long delays and prices that are $20+ more than the game sitting beside it. Add in the fact that there was no longer as rich a pool of games waiting to be nabbed by WD (because the original publishers were handling more localizations themselves) and you have a market that no longer has a place for the company.
