View Full Version : Beat the credit crunch.. Any old games with a financial / wall street slant?
Ok, so in this turbulant world of banking collapse recently i thought i'd lighten the mood by playing a game with a banking, financial, or wall-street-esque slant.
But are there any??
I can't think of any, and i'm not counting MMORPG weapon trading! i'm thinking modern games set in a financial setting.
If there arn't any i think it could make a good setting, it's got all the pressure, risk and reward elements of any good game... then again i could just invest all i have in stocks and play the ultimate pressure game... but thats not what i'm getting at!
Anyone got any ideas?

I've never played it but there was an NES game called Wall Street Kid. I'm not sure if thats what you're looking for or not.

There's an older PC game about investing but I'm currently drawing a blank on it. Will look when I get home as I have a copy somewhere. I think it's called something like Capitalism.

The Great Wall Street Fortune Hunt for Odyssey^2 (description) (http://odyssey2.classicgaming.gamespy.com/strategy/wallst/index.php). It's the one O^2 Master Strategy game I'm missing.

Capitalism 1 & 2 for the PC are as good (and realistic) as it gets! They are HARD but once you learn to play them are pretty rewarding. You will either love it or hate it. Rags to Riches for PC is also another good one. It was made in 1993 by Interplay and although it is not as deep as Capitalism 1 or 2, it is MUCH more approachable. Also consider Aerobiz & Aerobiz Supersonic for SNES. These are not necessarily stock market games (the stock market is in them though) but they are a VERY fun economic\business simulations. It also deals with the airline industry which is one of the most turbulent (no pun intended) markets in the world. It makes for some good economic gaming "action".:)

I'm amazed that I was actually thinking of the correct title for the game. I never could get into it (didn't want to invest that much time in it) but it seemed like a good simulation.

In the arcade, there was Wall Street, in which you played as a fireman with a trampoline who saves investors as they jump out their windows to the ground below (rather fitting, isn't it?). As someone once said, the music alone will make you want to jump out your own building.
On the PC, there was Forbes Corporate Warrior (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/forbes-corporate-warrior). Mobygames describes it as such:
Forbes Corporate Warrior uses the first person shooter genre as a metaphor for the cutthroat business world. The premise is that a brilliant scientist developed a virtual reality helmet that maps the real world, free market place into a VR arena where different types of business competitors are represented as a variety of enemies. You begin the game with a weapon called the price slicer with which to dispatch your competitors. There are various other marketplace-inspired weapons to collect in the arena. Different weapons represent different business tactics in the real world (like the Ad Blaster and the Legal Laser) and some work better against certain competitors than others. All cost money to use; in fact, it costs you money even if you stand still. Your goal is to keep your stock price and gain market share. In addition to metaphorically shooting competitors in the virtual world, you can also adjust certain factors in real time, such as increasing or decreasing your debt, selling or buying back stock, and modifying the price of your goods along a thriftiness/luxury continuum.
An FPS backed by Forbes? Sign me up. I've actually been looking for a hard CD of this for awhile now.
And then there's the usual SimCity, Civilization and other managerial games in which you take control of corporate funds and try to create a stable society...yawn.

Can you count the stock market game that schools use in economics classes?

few greats off the top of my head
you may be thinking of zapitalism
another great one is gazillionaire
besides these there are a number of pretty cool dos stock market games that i used to play whos names elude me.
a number of mediocre windows ones including one we had to play with a bit in high school for economics (figured out that the stock market changes were static and you could cheat by advancing the computers clock in bios taking note of the changes going back and then buying what you already knew would go up ;) )

I remember those pc games where you had to play the stocks. I sucked at those games (hence the reason why I don't own any stocks right now, hehehe)

Wall Street Kid on the NES. Very interesting idea and a really fun game once you figure out how the mechanics work.

Well, theres dealing with the finances of a city in SimCity. I believe that was released on the SNES. The PS had SimCity 2000.

best version of sim city 2000 was definitely the network edition as you had to purchase land before you could use it. That gives it a marginally more financial side than its vanilla cousins.

Heh, I was just playing Tax Avoiders the other day. Neat little game.
Thanks for all the sugestions.
Capitalism 2 sounds really good, i also came across a game called wall street raider which is apparently the deepest most realistic stock trading sim out there. Has anyone tried it?
Has anyone got any tips cause i really don't know what i'm doing in it yet.
here's a link to a description and screenshot of the game and download to trial version..

Maybe if you try to search something related to the year of 1929. I think that there were some financial simulations in the middle eighteen.
There should be some old microcomputer games about fiscal simulations.
I know that there is a Stock Market challenge on the International high IQ Society, but this game simulation is only for members. The Smartest man/woman in the world is open to anyone (After all, it is "THE WORLD") ... There is also a Chess competition for members only.
