View Full Version : Incompatiable Games on 32X?

We all know there are some US games that just will not run on some versions of a US released console -- the Intelivision, the PS2 (for some PS1 games), and the Sega CD come to mind.

But are there any games that won't run a Sega 32X?

The reason I ask is that about a month ago I won on EBay a complete, good shape conditon of Zaxxon Motherbase 2000. The game arived quickly, but when I tried to play it I found I could'nt. Either the menu would'nt come up, or it would local after hitting Start, or you could get to the scene just after the menu and then it would lock spewing out a bunch of numbers and letters on the screen. Cleaning both the game and the system resulted in the same problem.

I contacted the seller and explained the situation, and she was very nice about it. Since she had been unable to test the game before selling it, she said she would refund my money (I paid with PayPal) once I shipped the game back. This I did, and refund was given. At the same time, I bid on and won another copy of the game, just thinking the cart itself had gone back (I think I even made a post here about that).

Well, the game came today, I tried it -- EXACT same problem.

Does this game just not work on some 32X's?

I have the same exact trouble with Knuckles Chaotix. 6 copies, 3 different consoles.....nothing.

I had Knuckles Chaotix lock up on me after the sega screen after playing it for awhile and then resetting it. It's almost like it was over-heating. I've heard of similar problems with 32X games, I don't think they were made particularly well (physically that is)/

I have found 32X games to be very flaky. My Wrestlemania locks up frequently, and my Star Wars only works half the time. And Toughman Contest. The rest of the games work fine.

I know that Genesis Virtua Racing does not run in a 32X, but I'm pretty sure thats not quite whats being asked here..

My Zaxxon Motherbase 2000 works fine on both of the 32X systems I own (I'll send you one if you like, SoulBlazer.), but I once had Chaotix lock up repeatedly when I was playing it on another system. It was one of the few times when a cartridge-based console jammed on me.

I've only had Doom lock up on me, no other issues with my other 6 carts and current 32X. Funny too, since the reset switch wouldn't even unfreeze the system.

I have 3 32Xs and only 2 of them work. I think it's one of those things you want to have extras of just in case of strange problems like that.

Interesting responses. I only have five other games for the 32X, but I've played each of them for several hours at once without a problem. It's just this Zaxxon game that does'nt work. I wonder if it's worth even buying again. I don't even know how the game IS.

I remember getting a 32x when it first came out, and my roomie almost killed himself trying to install the damn thing to the Genesis (damn clips!) Things would have been simpler without the damn clips.

Anyway, he almost broke both consoles trying to get them to fit until he FINALLY managed to get the damn thing running with Star Wars Arcade. It froze up a lot. I used to tease him and say it was because of his shitty installation job... now I know it was just a design flaw.

Incidently, Virtua Racing for the Genesis won't run throught the 32x because it contains the SVP chip (similar to the SNES FX chips, and the ONLY Genesis game to ever use one. It gave the Genny more polygonal processing power, but it was too expensive to make.) The chip in VR interferes with the dual processors in the 32x (they come from the same design family.)

I got a 32X a few years ago at Wal-Mart that wouldn't work. I exchanged it, and the second one wouldn't work. I posted for help on the rec.games.video.classic newsgroup and was told by several people to take the 32X apart and pull off the two ribbon connectors inside and reseat them. It takes a lot of work because there are about 20 screws to remove between the 6 on the outside and another dozen plus around the metal shielding inside. It worked perfectly after that.

Does the 32X work with Sega CDX units, and if they don't has anyone modified the systems to work together?

The 32x works in the cdx just fine, although it looks goofy and you're unable to get into the cd part. I also know that 32x cd games won't run with the combo. It's also not supposed to be good for the cdx, but I haven't heard of any problems with the two.
