Damn, Hickory Hollow TILT is where I cut my teeth! Every weekend my allowance would go right to TILT. Street Fighter II, Double Dragon, Golden Axe... I remember when they introduced the brand new NEO GEO machine... Ninja Combat, Magician Lord... and Sbarro's Pizza was within smelling distance, I'd go there to get re-energized and to give my wrists a rest after beating up thugs in Crime Fighters.

I am definitely going to check this place out when I come back to Nashville.

DreamTR

ColdGuy: It's mostly going to be retro. It will have some newer stuff obviously, but I'm not ordering new games, and we will depend on trade-ins/closeouts.

XYXYZ: Sbarro's is still nearby too. We won't have any less than 35 arcade machines to start, and plan on doubling that as we progress.

Congrats Jason! That's an accomplishment and amazing you have so much going on in there. How did you decide on your splitting of collection and store merch? I'm sure that took awhile to sort through and deciding on prices for credits on many games, unless they're all a quarter. Good luck on your venture!

DreamTR
11-16-2008, 09:40 PM
Everything is 25 or 50 cents with the exception of Tekken 6, which is 0.75....

Game store stuff = not much. No way I would put my collection in a store, but the arcade is definitely carrying the place.

Let us know what your most played are after a few weeks and if you have certain age groups showing up more frequently. Would be interesting to see the demographics of who the main goers are and what they are playing.

DreamTR
11-17-2008, 10:51 PM
It's all types. The demographics of the mall are very mixed. I would say the area is about 50% black, 25% white, 25% hispanic, and people are playing these most:

Tekken 6
Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 8th Mix
Marvel VS Capcom 2
Guilty Gear Accent Core
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Maximum Force
Cruis'n World
Killer Instinct
Ms. Pac-Man
Galaga
Bubble Bobble
Pinball Machines

This Monday seemed slow, but that was expected. I know the business is going to be carried on Fri/Sat/Sun

Best of luck with this venture, DreamTR!

The classics section is very nice; cabs look to be in good shape (as far as I can tell from the pics). However, the 90s-to-modern portion could be more or less replaced wholesale for my taste, with the exception of the Raiden II (I wouldn't mind having a II / DX somewhere near me!) and some others. Of course, I imagine those were what was available. There are so many awesome late 80s/early 90s games I'd rather see than a Cruis'n, but you gotta call the shots based on what people are playing.

Would be interested to see which machines make the most money!

This is a great store, and I really hope it becomes a success. But is there a market in Nashville for this? I didn't really think of Nashville as a city full of hardcore gamers. Maybe the big cities like NYC, Chicago, LA etc. but certainly not Nashville.

We only have two sets of racing games, and it's definitely not smart just to have classics only.

We've been open since November, we are inside a mall, built in traffic...out rent is decent, and we have games no one in the state has not even out on console..(Tekken 6 BR and Blazblue)

Arcades never really "died", people just were not progressive to the changes....there are gamers everywhere. I think everyone does not realize, we have a console section for people that want to meet/play in public, and our rates are so cheap that it becomes the "hangout" to be. There are more gamers now than any other time in history, but not everyone wants to go to random people's houses all the time....

Of course; didn't say that it should be classics only - that'd only make the gap worse. What I mean is there's a gap between the "classics" and the 3D era stuff. There aren't many games from the years 86-94 there, although the ones that are are good picks. Apologies for not looking at the post where you stated what was getting played most. I'd sacrifice a couple of the classics to get at least one MVS and put a Magical Drop in there (since Bubble Bobble is doing well, and a straight-up puzzle game would be nice). Plus, you can get rid of that Aero Fighters and put in one of the MVS sequels, freeing up some space for a better game like Raiden Fighters Jet.

Ultimately you're going to make the decisions on what to get based on what's getting money, but there are some genres absent and nearly an era underrepresented, while there's simply too many (so I think) of the so-called "Golden Era" games. If I was running an arcade, I'd only put in the pre-crash games that were must-plays. Actually, I'd put in a Space Invaders for that reason. Time Pilot '84 is by far my preferred game, but I don't know how many people like to play it - probably not tons. Again, just ignore anything that doesn't match up with your observations (definitely interested to hear them all)!

Have you put up a list somewhere near the entrances of what games are inside? That way people wouldn't just see some game they didn't care for and turn away - it'd also be a great "ambush point" for asking random questions to people about their impressions.

Actually, Bubble Bobble does not do that well. Snow Bros does. I think we actually have a very good amount of 86-94 stuff in there. If you actually break it down we have a pretty decent amount of stuff from that era.

Also, we had Time Pilot 84. No one played it. We had a Neo Geo MVS, no one played it. All they want is KOF. We have Strikers 1945 Plus which is in a Neo cabinet already. The golden era games are there specifically for people who bring their kids in, and want to play some of the oldies. Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Gaplus, Spy Hunter, Paperboy, all do well. Heck, we just got Hyper Sports in, and that game is doing better than Track and Field ever was, but the whole idea is for us to have something for everyone. Our demographic is really lower income families, and they love their King of Fighters, Tekken, shooting games, and Street Fighter.

XYX: We've been profitable since we opened. We started with 65 or so machine and picked up almost 40 more if that tells you anything. Profitable in the sense that we don't "owe" anything on the games, but we do have a few that are on revenue sharing.

Ed Oscuro
04-14-2009, 01:44 AM
Okay, that explains a lot. I really didn't see Snow Bros. outpacing Bubble Bobble, wow!

Will be interested to hear how Strikers Plus does...it's not my favorite in that series due to the technical limitations and screen format, but it's from a good series regardless.

Are you going to have a certain classic whip-and-jump platformer showing up in the arcade soon, by any chance?

DreamTR
04-14-2009, 01:55 AM
Ed OScuro: We're going to have VS Castlevania up and running. Not sure about Haunted Castle. All depends on the number of cabinets I can obtain in the next few months...I choose not to understand why certain games make money there and others do not. I know one thing...Japanese cabinets are easiest to have, but the hardest to obtain in this area, and hispanics love KOF and Snow Bros.

XYXZYZ

:grrr: Man, them Nashstonians ain't got no culture. What games were in it?

Well, technically it only had Samurai II, and this one now has Strikers 1945 Plus.

We have one more with just KOF 98 and KOF 2003 but I am in the process of getting a Japanese Neo 25 4 slot, so I'll put Metal Slug in there and some other crap..

Yeah, I'm guessing that the early 2000s are about the cutoff for machines to come down in price enough that mere mortals can get them for local arcades...anything newer is going to retail for a couple thousand dollars, a price at which you could get a few good old arcade machines to offer up just as good a revenue stream. Personally, I find that the late 90s - present "big gigantic cabinet" type games (like a huge House of the Dead 3-ish that I saw in England, in a gas station of all places) are flashy but quickly outdated, and they don't offer up enough of a variation in play that I'd want to keep going back once I'd cleared them or whatever - and they take up valuable space that again you could put a couple other cabs into. Just my rambling thoughts on the subject.

That's why I like the fact arcades are affordable =) Games and going to them. I love people that complain about 50 cents for a game, though. Everyone expects everything to be 1981 prices, and racing games for 50 cents seems fair to me.

Nice website. The rockets look sorta like ones used in Project Nike (Ajax, Zeus, etc.); can't place the game that art is from but it reminds me of the recessed control panels on my Stratovox cocktail :)

Good news on the updates. I like the list of games! I only saw Maximum Force recently but it looks pretty good. And Blazblue looks like a good choice, although I hope they don't make it hard to upgrade as some people are already calling for increased animation.

Solar Assault, Dimahoo, Virtual ON...wow. Especially at Solar Assault.

Was the game store a separate location earlier and now merged with the arcade?

Is that a red Namco Excellena I spy in there?
It most certainly is.

I tried to pick up a few from Namco when they were selling out for cheap. Never got around to it unfortunately. Nice cabs.

I really need to update those pics, we've got more Japanese cabinets now..what is the deal with those Exceleenas anyway? Mine is not even in the greatest shape...

Wow. Sunset Riders. In a real arcade. Relatively close to home. That by itself would almost make a visit worthwhile. Is it a 2 player or 4 player cabinet?

It's a dedicated 4 player cabinet for Sunset Riders...

Hey Dream... One of these days, I might like to offer you a trade for that Bad Cats pin.

And BTW - your Track & Field machine keeps taking my quarters! :)

And where is this new location? I may have to visit there. I used to work at Hickory Hollow only a few years back (At the Babbage's, before it closed down) but that place really creeps me the hell out, now.

And the sad thing is - I remember when your space was still 'The Gold Mine'.

And I hope you pick up a Twilight Zone pin in your quest for the perfect arcade. If you got one, you'd have to pry that machine from my cold, dead hands... When it was originally in arcades back in the day, I would literally spend about $10 a day on Twilight Zone. And I usually got a replay every game I would play.

Diskoboy: Yeah, that Track & Field coin thing is a mystery....it works as soon as I open the coin door, but I'm pretty sure those are the original mechs in the damned thing...

Funny you mention Twilight Zone, I DO have one, but it's in my garage and there's no way I am bringing it there. I shouldn't have even brought Sopranos there and now THAT is out of order from being on location....

Was there a Babbage's AND EB World? I know the EB World changed to GameStop awhile back...now there's another game store there called CA$H 4 GAMES.

I have one other location in Smyrna called Soap Opera Laundromat & Game Room. The games are are mostly mine except for the pinballs and the broken games in the dark left hand corner.

We are attempting to do a Rivergate location, but they have a family entertainment center moving in there. The combination of that and our finances may prevent us from doing so.

I stopped by your place last night, to play some pinball. Check the top score on your Robotron, if your machine saves the names after you turn them off. :)

The HH Babbages was on the "new wing" right outside (I believe it was) the old Dilliards, upstairs. When I was there, Camelot Music was still right across the hall. The store closed in 2002, and when Gamestop bought EB, they took over the downstairs store. I think my old store is a manacure place, now. I hope, for all our sakes, you get another location soon. Hickory Hollow is starting to look anemic. Practically every store on that wing I worked on is now closed. Even the shoe place, downstairs.

It was the first mall I ever went to, when I moved here in 1982. It's sad to watch that place suffer, the way it has. But I'll be seriously amazed if that mall is still standing within 5 years.

Robotron has been erasing scores left and right...I had something like 1.2 million and it erased that so I gave up on it.

As far as the mall goes, I know it's dying, but the thing is CBL owns two other malls in the area, Cool Springs and Rivergate. Since Hickory Hollow opened in 1978, it's been all downhill in the past 10 years because of the lower income residents now living in the area AND competition from all the other malls. To be honest there are too MANY malls for the demographics Nashville has. Just not enough people live in the Antioch area to frequent the mall...

The reason the wings are cleared out is because there is a school coming next year (March was last I heard, might be as late as September) but alternative use is the ONLY way the mall is going to survive.

We won't close this location unless our sales plummet and the school does not open. It is profitable and we do ok there, but with the amount of machines we're running we could be doing better.

I went to the Hickory Hollow location today (August 6, 2011) and I have to say that Dream is quite a nice person and I loved the look of the store. Decent collection too. I plan on coming back the first Saturday of every month. Looks like Video Games Etc. (closed July 14, 2009) has finally found a successor. My first score included a 32X, completing my US Sega console and peripheral collection.

Maybe I'll blow some quarters on some arcade games next time too.

Opry Mills would be a great location though I'm sure the rent is way more than Hickory Hollow. A lot of people avoid Hickory Hollow so they don't get robbed or shot.

Opry Mills has Dave and Busters.

No one gets "robbed" or "shot" here. That is something that everyone keeps making up. In fact there have been more "robberies" in the Green Hills and Franklin areas as of late (GameStop twice) but the media makes it look like it's a warzone here. I've been in the arcade since Nov 2008, never had an incident here. There have been incidents "outside" the mall but just like in Green Hills and Franklin, that can happen in any area.

I'll be in Nashvegas this weekend, but I won't be able to stop in. Sounds like a cool place though.
