Neat, I was wondering how this turned out after the recent posting over at GameSniped. Pretty neat little item, there (especially since I'm a big fan of the source material).

Shame the console ports of it turned out the way that it did and it's a double shame that it wasn't up to snuff with its predecessor (one of the first games I bought when we upgraded to a 486).

Thanks for doing up the neat little article.

Does this mark the beginning of the Second Coming? :P

Seriously, it's totally awesome to see this mystery finally solved. Thanks for all your hard work researching this. :)

Well that depends; upon tracking this down, I found 2 *real* long box variants that I didn't know existed. So who knows, might be the 2nd coming of an all new long box hunt. :D

Wasn't Space Hulk deemed 1 of the worst shooters on the PS?

Considering how bad of a port it was, I could see where people would have that opinion of it. The load times alone are legendary in the console versions of the game.

The upside is that I don't freak out about dropping them compared to jewel cases.

I never played this version of Space Hulk, but I loved the PC version of the original back when I was in High School. It was deceptive because it LOOKED like a shooter, but it wasn't a shooter. It was a strategy game where you pre-programmed your teams actions (move here, shoot there, use this item here) and then hit a button to make it play out. You could control one character in real-time while the rest of your time played out their commands like robots. It was a neat concept, but if that's what they were trying to do with the PS1 version, than yeah, that would be a pretty crappy shooter because it wasn't supposed to be one.

Oh, and I recently picked up Kileak again after about 12-13 yrs. I think it's cool. It's got a neat atmosphere, and the systems limitations give at an unintentionally cool effect--the lighting looks bright (like, surgical OR bright) where you are, but things at a distance are pitch black. You can't see what's coming down a hallway. The only way you know there's an enemy around is if you hear your motion sensor beeping. It creates some tension and keeps you on your toes. Too bad the puzzles don't make any fucking sense whatsoever.

Ya, you're thinking of this masterpiece (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/space-hulk) and not the followup (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/space-hulk-vengeance-of-the-blood-angels).

BTW, I whipped up a disc image of Vengeance of the Blood Angels for another dude on another forum a few months ago. There's a few steps you have to do to make it work properly in XP and up, but it's quite playable. Just don't go in expecting the same level of awesomeness as the first one :(

That's too bad because I've never played anything quite like the original Space Hulk, and despite all it's good qualities, there definitely was room for improvement. The multiple cameras representing your team members was just great. There was nothing like seeing a gene stealer ripping apart your dude in the upper left corner and going "oh shit." :)

I just got Kileak too, funny enough.

No it's not great, to say the least.

Epidemic, the sequal did it better.

And ditto with Brahma Force, also made by Genki.

I could have sworn I used to see longbox space hulk at my old video rental place that recently went out of business. I could have been thinking of the saturn version but I'm almost positive that I've seen longbox space hulks in the wild.

Mailman:

As mentioned before, without a manual there's nothing to go on. The timing is also off for it having a long box release.
