Hey Everyone,

I've got a Pokemon related mystery I'm trying to figure out.

In December 1999, Toy R Us and Nintendo Canada did a contest called "Gotta Catch Mew". The contest gave you a chance to get one of rare Mew characters for your Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow cart. Basically what you had to do was go to the electronics dept. of Toys R Us and get a card with Mew sticker on it. If it said "Caught Me" underneath the Mew sticker, that means you won!

I was lucky enough to win a Mew :-D. However, 3 months later something very strange happened. One night when I tried to continue my Pokemon Yellow game, I got a message that said that my saved game data had been destroyed! Not corrupted, not deleted, DESTROYED! If course, this means that all my high-level Pokemon, including Mew, were gone.:(

To this day I have no idea why this happened. I never used any kind of cheat device with my game, and I've never been able to duplicate this error message. My theory is that the problem was caused by the Mew data itself. Can anyone here think of a plausible explanation as to why my game crashed?

(Oh yeah, In case your wondering what inspired my thread title, it's from the english title for the 8th Pokemon movie "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew".)

I would guess that Nintendo wrote into the code that the game would erase after a set period of time so that you couldn't pass it to all your friends. But that's only a guess.

data can get corrupted in many ways, the game could have been dropped it could have been near a strong magneticsource, it could even have been a glitch or even a faulty battery. sram is not a very secure way of saving data so many things can go wrong.

but it wasn't an evil conspiracy, just faulty technology.

I would guess that Nintendo wrote into the code that the game would erase after a set period of time so that you couldn't pass it to all your friends. But that's only a guess. That seems thoroughly unlikely, especially since it took three months. If that was really the case there would have been a horrible, contagious epidemic of Pokemon carts dying all across the nation!

There is of course a well-established way now for anyone to catch Mew without a cheat device or risking corruption of one's save data.

Huh? What method are you referring to?

You have to restart the game though.

Actually, there is another way to get a Mew, but it's only for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and it was intentional, unlike the aforementioned glitch.

You need to own My Pokémon Ranch. Upload 999 Pokémon, then the ranch proprietor, Hayley, will have a Mew. If you bring her an egg (doesn't matter what's in it), she will offer to trade her Mew for the egg. You can then withdraw the Pokémon for usage in your game.

As for the glitch above, I can certainly vouch that it works. I have one Mew from Pokémon Blue currently in Pokémon Silver.

Can it be 999 Bidoofs? LOL

Good question... I have no idea, I've been bringing random Pokemon in with the ones she wants, but she's getting uncomfortably close to asking for Lugia.:bullshit:

I've got a Wario Land cart that's done the same thing on a couple of different occasions... when I get to the file save screen, a message scrolls across the top of the screen, and one of my data slots is erased.

The original Pokemon game is notoriously unstable. Yellow especially. I have known a number of people whose carts just up and crashed.

To get the 999 pokemon for ranch you should either buy an action replay or a ds flash cart. Then download a program called pokesav and you can make any pokemon you want with any stats. You can also use a code that lets you clone pokemon.

half the fun is actually earning it, if you want to cheat then yeah (you suck!)

i've been working on legitametaly earning mew and have 760 legitimate pokemon on my ranch (also in the process of trying to get a complete pokedex in the new games). Certainly breaths some new life into the game, i think its neat how she will request certain pokemon that aren't in your dex, then you can look up (in game) the easiest way to catch that pokemon (great for all those really wierd to catch ones in d/p)

and yes you could catch 999 bidoofs if you really felt inclined ;-)

Oh good old Battery saves... To be fair SEGA_Queen, the day your save died would have eventually come around one way or another unfortunately.
Do you still have this Mew card you mentioned as i would love to see a scan of it!

Fantastic link there. Thank you so much for sharing that website darkslime, ill be trying it shortly.

Who else remembers the websites that were up back in the day around the time Pokemon was taking off? Various cheat websites had so many fake ways to catch Mew.
One in particular included getting to the truck near the Ferry/SS whatever.
Its a very vague description, however the the truck (which is the same size as Ash) was actually there making this one seem so real... The truck image is one that always comes to mind with Pokemon along with Missingno!

didn't the truck have something to do with how you catch mew in the japanese version at one of the pokmeon events?

Oh, and surprisingly enough, the battery for my Pokemon Yellow cart is still going strong! I'm currently trying to build the "ultimate team" so I can earn a Surfing Pikachu in Pokemon Stadium!
