View Full Version : [SOLVED] Sega CD, that silly fuse, and whether or not I need it

My friend asked me to see if this Sega CD and model1 Genesis she had lying about with no cords would work. Since I finally have my own Sega CD, I have the AC adapter which apparently works on both Sega Genesis model 1 and the Sega CD. Sweet.

After hooking in headphones, the power cable, and (oh sacrilege!) an NES RF Modulator, I had a working Genesis model 1.

HOWEVER:

Her Sega CD was totally dead. I poked around on the internet, and found out there was a 0 Ohm resistor "fuse"; figuring this to be useless unless I plugged in the wrong cord, I cut it out and soldered some wire to test the system.

It worked!

My question, of course, is whether I can leave this piece of wire in there and not worry so long as she buys a proper power supply, or if I should find a replacement "fuse."

If I do need a replacement fuse, if someone could link one at mouser electronics or the like, that would be great-- I can't seem to find one that matches (2.5Amp, 0 Ohm, I think.)

Thanks a lot!

First off, I am not an expert, but I have read many, many different sites about the Sega CD fuse problem.

I performed that same repair. The general feeling is that as long as you keep the same power adaptor plugged into the unit, it should be fine. If you accidently plug in a Nintendo adaptor, it will probably ruin your system. I have been playing my "fuseless" Sega CD for several months with no problem.

One of the functions of a fuse is to regulate the amount of power going through an area. If you aren't using a fuse and there is an increase in power, it will go right through your system. Then there are many areas that could be damaged.

If you use a fuse, a surge would cause the fuse to go out and limit the damage, only up to the fuse.

IF the fuse blew, it blew for a reason....

I understand that the fuse blew due to some problem-- very likely someone who didn't know better plugged in a Nintendo power cord (because they apparently fit) and blew the thing.

The fuse and understanding its purpose is not the problem at all -- I'm just wondering if it, so long as an official SegaCD power cable is used, will be fine. If not, a link to where one can find such a replacement fuse would be grand.

No no no, the fuse could blow even with a proper power supply.

Ever hear of a power surge? A small one would be saved by the fuse.

Just because you use the official power supply, does NOT mean any fault is guaranteed. Hell, what if the cord got kinked or something on the same circuit shorted out?

Power surges were actually my concern. Is this the fuse I will need? I think it might be, but I'm unsure:

Anything that has a matching voltage and current rating.

It has the same current rating (2.5 Amps), but as for voltage, I actually can't find what the original fuse was.

Anyone know?

Well, I received that one I linked to from Mouser, soldered it in, and it worked like a charm. After replacing the battery, it even saves too! Thanks guys.

Awesome. That's good to hear.
