I found a disc-only Christmas NiGHTS at a flea market last Saturday and noticed some Japanese text in the game (not all, just some lines, the menus were mostly English). I looked online and noticed the North American disc art is red and green while mine is black and white.

Which version is this, and does the fact that it plays on my Saturn (a thrift store find) mean my system has been modded?

Thanks in advance.

No clue on the version, but it is not the NTSC-U Release that I have. You are correct, the NTSC-U version has red and green on the disc and comes in a sleeve.

Being Nights rival (whatever that thing's name is) I always thought was cool. i don't remember if it is x-mas nights or nights (pretty sure it is x-mas nights) you could also be Sonic.

That was just Christmas Nights. Neat little feature and one of the main reasons I snapped it up.

well its not really uncommon for japanese games to use english text especially on the title screen and main menus. Perhaps its the ntsc-j release, why dont you snap a picture and put it up for comparison.

That is true. I have a bunch of capcom saturn games that are NTSC-J and they have English menus.

A bit off topic, But I heard there is supposed to an Easter Egg in the game where if you set the system's clock to about 2090 you can play nuclear Christmas nights or something similar.

Here's a picture of it. Again, if it plays on my console, does that mean my Saturn is modded?

download any game and test it, but imo it is an original copy

Wild. Guess so. That's the japanese part number, the Japanese Sega Saturn logo on the bottom, etc. Looks just like the one on Satakore (http://www.satakore.com/sega-saturn-demo,,610-6431,,Christmas-Nights-Into-Dreams-Touki-Genteiban-JPN.html)...so...yea. Cool beans.

Chip mod then, I guess? Not a region switch or anything? Everything else works peachy?

For fun, you should do a quick disc copy of one of your games and see if it boots up, you lucky dog you.

So a modded Saturn plays copied games and Japanese games. I know little about it. Can you do a straight copy of games?

Usually not. A mod chip only gets passed the check for original media (allows you to play backups), a region switch is usually required in tandem with a mod chip to allow games from non-native regions to work. Because of this a region switch will not allow burned games to be played, and a mod chip alone will only allow play of backups in the console's native region.

I've heard the PAL version of Virtua Racing will play on any Saturn console, is it possible Christmas NiGHTS (JPN) doesn't have a region lock or is dual boot?

That is the Japanese version of Christmas Nights in the picture. Your system is not modded. Some disks (like this one) didn't have territory protection. Mod chips only allow you to play CDR (from the same region as your Saturn), they don't allow playing disks from different regions. Hope that helps.

yea as previously, stated Japanese Saturn logo and part number lends itself pretty well to the ntsc-j release. pretty cool find, if i had an English release id totally trade it unfortunately i only have vanilla nights. (vanilla as in regular not some ultra rare edition) lol
