I was searching for evo: the search for eden for snes. I have been looking for a complete one forever. They're always are in stores for like $150 or end up selling for around $120 complete. So to my surprise I found a complete one for $50 with a buy it now tag for $50.00. I quickly clicked on the auction only to find out some dummy bid $48.00 on it and buy it now was no longer an option. Now i'm gonna have to watch it sell for over $100 and not get it again.
THANKS DUMB PEOPLE ON EBAY!!!!

Some people are friggin' stupid.
Instead of simply purchasing it for $2 more, they rather save $2. Sad thing is this: it may go much higher than what the seller wanted thanks to that guy.

I can't stand that. I think I know why people do this however:
They may not have the money to pay for it right now (ie: payday next week), and they want it but do not want to risk the chance that someone else will use that low buy it now. So, they bid and remove the buy it now entirely. Yeah, they will pay more in the end, but by doing this they have at least given themselves a chance to get the goods.
OR, he bid to hold it for himself until he gets the funds. See, you can bid and remove the buy it now....only later to retract your bid which will revive the buy it now option and then he can quickly snatch it up. Not many people know that you can do this :)
Or maybe I am giving people too much credit and they are just very dumb!

Yeah, wish I had found it sooner. This is one that there was never a complete one on ebay for a long time. Now they've been showing up pretty often. I'm sure i'll have another chance. Just not at $50.00 buy it now. I just really wanted this game. It is in my top 5 of best snes games.

Wow, that does suck. The other thing I don't get is when you list a really high-ticket item, like a computer or something you expect to go for $800+, the first person always bids like five bucks. Do you really think you'll get that for five bucks? And then of course, it also takes away the Buy it Now option...

It seems to me that it might not be the best idea to sell a high ticket item with a BIN and a super low starting bid. I mean, you know in advance that one low bid is all it takes to waste the money you spent on the BIN, right? I would not be surprised at all if someone were to enter that low starting bid for the express purpose of wasting your money and being an ass.
I guess that was my polite way of saying that not all 'dumb people on ebay' are buyers. ;)

Well then let me politely say that your math and reading comprehension abilities need work, because if you look at the fee breakdown, the Buy it Now fee is, at most, $0.25. So I'd rather start the bidding at $1.00 ($0.35 listing fee) and pay a total of $0.60 to include a Buy it Now rather than starting the bidding at $500 and paying a $4.00 listing fee.

People who list high-value items auction-style with the additional BIN add-on are throwing money away. Believe me, I've tried, but 999 times out of 1000, you're going to get an immediate bid for the minimum price before you'll find someone willing to pay the BIN price. Either start it super low and let bidding take care of itself, or make it a fixed price listing and hope it sells or you get a good offer. Paying for both is pretty dumb.

Another possible reason for this is that some new ebayers(noobs) simply don't know about the watch feature in "my ebay". And I can confess that when I first got on ebay over 5 years ago I use to bid on items just to watch them(because I didn't know about the "watch item" feature), but I always bid low. I would never bid my maximum early. Today though, you only see my bid within the last 10 seconds.

Yeah, I only snipe anymore. And even now that doesn't matter cause so many people do it. Even if you do want the item without sniping, bidding days before the auction ends is just raising the bar. If something is going for $5 with a few minutes left some will say "hmm, $5, I'll bid $11." But if the item is $11 with a few minutes left, someone will say "hmm, I could bid $22". Sniping is the only option for collectors of anything, wheter it be video games, records, or whatever. Anything collectable requires a snipe unless money isn't a consideration.

Yeah, sniping is the way to go, obviously, but I do bid in two instances: when I want to remove a BIN when I know I can get it cheaper than the BIN price, and when there are no bids yet, and the item is listed terribly. Once an item gets a bid, nothing can be edited, even if the seller cancels the bid, so if the seller makes a bad spelling mistake in the title or something, I can take advantage.

glad i found this thread, ok so as many of you know I'm selling off my entire collection( see off topic thread). This morning I added 237 auctions and have already got 2 questions asking if i'll put bins on items. One guy wanted me to put a 15$ buy it now on jack bros. a game that usually sells between 50 and 100$. The other guy wanted me to put a 14$ bin on tmnt tournament fighters for the nes. First off where do u come up with 14$s random number generator or something and second the game can sell for 30 to 50 bucks pretty easy. My response was do you think I'm an idiot. Seriously I listed everything for 99 cents because its a good price to start things out at and I know it will all go up for what ever the common price is now a days. It just doesn't make sense to me that some one would ask for a bin especially a low one on a more expensive item. Now if I had just listed them and nothing else I could almost at least understand that they thought I didn't know what they were worth but I have 237 video game auctions including one of the hardest to find systems released in north America and several rarer games and systems. It just seems crazy to me that these people are really that dumb or think that I am.

Yeah that's one reason I sometimes bid (given I always snipe) before the end of an auction. The other is to say "hey, someone's interested in this item, please don't cancel the auction and side-deal!". I've seen less auctions stopped while people have bid on stuff than when there are no bids at all... plus it also checks for me whether I can place a bid or not (if those darn regional restrictions are in place).

Beyond simple stupidity, people are always trying to get one over on other people. I've had buyers put up bin's for me but my offers were very respectable. And theres been times when the seller refused and I ended up winning the auction for a much lower price(their badLOL). Anyway, if I was in your shoes I would respond back with the most smart-ass thing I could think of. It's the least you can do to get them back:wink 2:

Nah, don't do that, there's nothing to be gained by it. I always just say "Nope!". That's not overly sarcastic or aggressive, but the implications are there that you think the dude is an idiot.
When you start something at .99 it oftentimes means you don't know what the item is worth. That's why you're getting those questions. If you'd started Jack Bros at $20 the guy would know that you had an idea of the rarity of the game. Of course if he'd looked at the rest of your auctions (which I always do) he would have been able to tell that you were a collector.
I guess what I'm saying is, you can't really blame the guys for trying. They aren't dumb, they're just trying to get a deal.

That just means your BIN price is too high. Of course nobody's going to bite if your fixed price is a stupidly optimistic number, which is definitely your problem if 999 out of 1000 auctions fail to end via BIN. About half of my auctions have successfully ended with BIN. Using BIN is not about maximizing your revenue, it's trading a little bit of price for convenience and certainty. Besides, if you're selling a cell phone or something else in a few select categories the first bid doesn't take off the BIN.

I was using your example of an auction started really low to save on listing fees. Obviously you'll sell more items via BIN if you have less room in between the BIN price and the starting bid, but you'd be spending a lot more on listing fees that way.
I've never heard of that feature where if an item gets a bid, the BIN price remains. I guess I don't sell in those select categories. That is an interesting option that would make using BIN combined with auction-style listings more effective if brought over to all categories.
