Huh, I think the Brotherhood of Steel one sounds the coolest. It lets you continue the plot after the ending of the main quest, which would be really neat. I wonder if it will raise the level cap.
i was about to say...
yeah the last one seems most appealing to me since it seems to be an actual expansion pack. however i'll probably get them all anyway. depends on price/content ratio. im on the pc afterall, so they are all just a torrent away if i deem it not worthy of my dollar.

Honestly, after the ending I got, it would be hard for me to keep playing 'after the main story'(I played through as a 100% good guy. You guys should understand). Therefore, I don't really care. I'm all power-armored up, I have the A-21 plasma rifle, scoped 44 magnum and the Terrible Shotgun. Not a whole lot to add as far as toys, and I'm not interested in starting a new character just for an expansion.
SPOILERS! highlight for broken continuity fun! It was funny: They told me I had to go in the super deadly radiation chamber to turn the machine on, and that I wouldn't make it. I turned and looked at Fawkes, my meta human chum who is healed by radiation. 'Isn't there another way?' 'Nope! Into the radioactive death with you!'

I must have missed out on a lot, because I sill have the regular plasma rifle, and the combat shotgun. I got the scoped .44 pretty early in the game though.
MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
I did continue from my last save in the laboratory (right before the final mission) and I'm now going around and exploring all the areas that I didn't get a chance to. I found the Gary vault, which was a little strange. Then I founf the white noise one where I picked up some weird violin, which must be important a side quest I never started.

There are some cooler weapons than those listed if you know where to look. Not a ton, but some cool stuff non the less. Some of the stuff you can build is pretty cool too.

Indeed. I briefly had the alien blaster, but I ran out of ammo. I acquired the mesmetron(sic? whatever) after wiping Paradise Falls off the map, but I don't usually bother with it. It's in a locker at the homestead.
By far the most incredibly fun weapon in the game is the Fatman. Mini-nukes? Sold. Totally destroys Super Mutant Behemoths in two hits. A lot of fun, until your idiot AI companion gets caught in the blast and is immediately reduced to his component atoms and you realize you haven't saved in three hours.
Has anyone here had any luck with the Rock-it launcher? I was toying with the notion of using it to destroy foes with my collection of garden gnomes, but I haven't been impressed with the performance of any of the other schematic-based weapons.
EDIT: I would call this fell weapon the gnome-inator. To hell with it: I'm just gonna make it.

Man, if you like shooting one nuke, you should hunt out the MIRV. Nothing like shooting eight nukes at once!
I had some success with the Rock-it-Launcher. More lol than actual damage. Only thing is that even after the ammo is loaded into the weapon, it still counts as carried weight. For someone like me that is a walking armory, I just could not give up the extra space.
I like messing around with the Railway gun. Nothing like sticking an enemies head to a wall as the whistles go Woo WOOOOO!

You can find more Alien Blaster ammo along the crash path of the UFO. It's spread across the whole map in a straight line. Just another cool detail that most people probably missed.

Sorry for a somewhat strange bump, but YES! The Broken Steel DLC will raise the level cap to 30. I just started the game this weekend so I don't really know much about the game, but a 20 level cap always seemed low. I'm glad they're raising.
Now here's hoping they release a GOTY version of Fallout 3 that includes all three expansions!

I'm sure they chose the level cap to encourage replay. Fallout games are designed for replayability. Don't know why people keep bitching anyway, it's a cakewalk by level 20.

No, they are scattered throughout the map. I believe I picked one up near a toxic waste dump, east of DC. My girlfriend is currently playing her way through and she told me there's one in Megaton, in the Sheriff's house.

Semi-spoiler, because I can tell you what it is, but I can't remember where it is:
A corpse named "Gibson" is somewhere in the basement of a ruin in the down town area of the game (as opposed to Wasteland areas). There's a note in his pocket that says "Search the House!"
Anyway, just thought that was cool. There are probably many others that I haven't found yet.

I'm about 3/4 of the way from level 19 to 20. Unfortunatey I have a ways to go on the main storyline still, and I've only found four bobbleheads. I'm wondering if I should wait to continue playing until the level cap is raised. I'm loving the game but I'm afraid playing without gaining experience will feel a little empty. Half the draw of an rpg is character growth after all.

Based on a few articles from Kotaku a few weeks ago...it'll be a cold day in hell before these materialize on the PS3. Bethesda has zero interest in porting these over. I wonder if they'll even release a GOTY version for PS3 in the future.

While I have little interest arguing the specifics why or why not, I feel we PS3 owners will eventually get a GOTY edition. Maybe no DLC, but surely a Game of the Year. It's pretty much pure speculation at this point, from either point of view.

Well, the expansion is completed. You're released back into the rest of the game with a schwack of neat bonus items and on the whole it was worth the few bucks. 100 easy achievement points. SOME of your actions within the expansion are influenced by character level/feats - I used my Black Widow and my speech chance was 100% every time I was given the option.
It was something new to do, but not particularly amazing. I was REALLY hoping for a few more epic sequences or something big and flashy.
Worth a play through, but probably more of a challenge when you're not level 20. From the looks of it you should be able to get at it from level 8 on up pretty easily.

I've got a question about computer hacking. I always figured that it was possible to solve the "puzzle" every time, but I tried an average hack last night probably 15 times and never got it. I'm 99% I was doing it right too. For example, "seeking" would return 0/8, but then every other word would have an "E" or "N". Is it NOT possible to solve every time?
JunkTheMagicDragon
02-12-2009, 11:58 AM
i was able to hack every terminal i came across. the score you get after each successive try is counting not just correct letters, but also positioning. in your example, say the correct pw is 'binders'. though 'seeking' shares four letters with it, none are in the same position, so you'd get a 0/7 for it.

Hacking is pretty easy, provided you have a high enough security skill to access the computer.

If you guys don't have the game already(which I don't) Circuit City most likely has 90,000 copies since it's a fairly new release. Just wait until Circuit City goes down to 50% off to pick it up. Almost there for me. So far 30% off.

On my second character, i decided to be melee. I grab anything of decent value... but i also kill everyone i meet, so i never get to sell it. Once i got a place to live, i kill everrything i see. It sort of screws with the plotline though.
I also used glitches to do the Anchorage DLC at level 3 and took all of the weapons and armor out of the simulation so virtually nothing can hurt me.

Well I have scrounger perk, and I believe there is another one that instead of caps finds more ammo.
With those I really have unlimited ammo/caps. I think I'm level 16 with 8k caps like 3k AR ammo. I have containers full of weapon/armor stashes I could sell.
But even with all that I still don't feel complete if every piece of the old world doesn't get scavenged. I have a chest with over 500 burnt books I still need to unload! Thank God for Rivet City!

Well I hit level 20 and after clearing out three areas without getting any XP I quit. I haven't even found Vault 112 yet, I've got 5 bobbleheads, and have only found about 50 books. I've probably got about 50+ hours to go, and I can't see myself doing that without advancing my character. I guess I'll just have to wait for Broken Steel to come out.

Yeah I'm not looking forward to that point, I'm level 16 almost 17 and it seems like I have the entire game in front of me still.

I'd like to say The Pitt is fixed and unbelievably fun. Unfortunately it's still glitchy. Good news: the "radio frequency" queuing you in to the start of the quest is almost instant (as opposed to Operation Anchorage...which doesn't pop up for a few minutes).
Bad news: my game keeps freezing as soon as the first quest starts and you're asked to find a slave outfit. As I approach the cliff edge to find the slave camp, my game locks up. Very irritating. After this happened 3 times in a row, I got sick of resetting my 360 and called it a night. I'll try another way around the cliff tonight.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I don't have The Pitt yet, so I can't say that it does. But I was getting an odd freeze up at one point in the game and was able to get arround it. The freeze up would come after I'd fixed the dish to the Washington Monument and was going down to checkout the Lincoln Memorial. I would approach from the front, get accosted by Silas and the game would freeze up just before I got to the door to under the memorial. It would freeze up the same way if I started a fight and ran up the steps of the memorial. I decided to go talk to Mad Dog and get my reward for the GNR quest. After that I was able to go to the Lincoln Memorial again.
You might have an outstanding side quest in your game that you may just need to "close" before doing The Pitt. Anyway, I hope this helps.
Just finished getting all of the achievements for the original content. Waiting for the last of the DLC before taking the game up again.

So the deal is Bethesda released an update to their update on April 2nd. No more freezing issues for anybody. Tried it Friday night and it works beautifully. All I had to do was delete the old file and download the new version from XBL.

That's cool. The mods are the main reason I got the PC version instead of the Xbox 360 version. I'm looking forward to some really cool mods. Some armor that actually protects you that you can find early on in the game would be nice. Also, some drug that cures radiation poisioning and/or heals you better than what I've found so far. I suppose the weak potions and the relative scarsity of everything makes the game more realistic, but the game is hard enough without making the powerups sparce.

Anyone else playing the new Point Lookout dlc? I've not played much so far but have enjoyed the new location; it's quite different from other areas in the game and you don't get stripped of your weapons/armour as you did in Operation Anchorage and The Pitt. Shame the level cap hasn't been increased but in all other respects this seems pretty good.
And I've not encountered any game-crippling bugs or glitches yet... maybe Bethesda tested this one first!

I'm really liking Point Lookout, the open-endedness of it is fun, it's a lot like Shivering Isles for Oblivion (more so than the other 3 dlc's, anyway). I did have one bug where the game crashed, nuked my autosave and cost me 2 hours of gameplay, but that's just a minor niggle once I'd swonr at it for a quarter of an hour.

It's just a shame I let myself be suckered into these $10 DLC purchases each time (still worth it IMO). Those patient folks who wait for the GOTY version this fall are going to be getting the deal of a lifetime.

I haven't bought any of the DLC's yet, as I sort of burned myself out playing through almost everything in the main game (sidequests, etc.) and needed a break. I will probably pick up the DLC packs, but you're right heybtbm, for the 5 DLC's alone you pay almost as much as the GOTY version will cost.
Changing the topic a bit, was anyone else disappointed with Fallout 3? Even though I had a great time overall with it, I found that it didn't really live up to the high standard set by Fallout 1 and especially Fallout 2. I enjoyed the first person perspective, and was able to live with that, but I thought that the story and the setting were both subpar. You didn't feel like you were having an impact on the world like you did in the old Fallouts, or even Mass Effect. The main story wasn't very long, and the end was (I thought) pretty bad. It had nothing that compared to the showdown with the Master. Also, most of the perks were not very inventive, and the overall leveling and SPECIAL system seemed dumbed down.
The biggest disappointment to me, though, was that after Megaton and maybe Rivet City there were no other settlements. While Bethesda got the wasteland atmosphere correct, they forgot to populate it. Compared to the worlds in Fallout 1 and even more so in Fallout 2, the game world in Fallout 3 was miniscule. I loved Oblivion, so I understand Bethesda's philosophy, but I feel that it doesn't really fit with the Fallout universe. In Fallout 1 you had Shady Sands, the Hub, Junktown, Necropolis, and the Boneyard, and each of them had their own set of quests and own importance to the overall plot. Fallout 2 had Arroyo, the Den, the villages, Vault City, Gecko, San Francisco, the Enclave base, NCR, and New Reno. Again, Fallout 3 just had two real cities, in my opinion.
Playing through Fallouts 1 and 2 (with the unofficial patch) reinforced what I already thought. Fallout 3 is a fun, but flawed, game.

Changing the topic a bit, was anyone else disappointed with Fallout 3?
Not in the slightest. It's the first RPG I've ever played where I've completed every side mission possible. I loved it.
No DLC for me yet though - I'm going to wait to see if/how they package all 5 of 'em, or for a sale or something.
As far as settlements go, I consider Big Town, Arefu, Canterbury Commons, Little LampLight, The Republic of Dave, Tenpenny Tower, Evergreen Mills, Paradise Falls, Oasis, and even Girdershade settlements. I found the world totally immersive because of the diversity that all of those locations (plus Megaton and Rivet City) provided.
I just get the feeling that you love the first two a lot.

Point Lookout is what the other crappy DLC should have been. If they had released this first, I would have loved it. Now, I'm just a little bit tired of Fallout 3. Sure, it was my favorite game of the last year, but the DLC does NOTHING to change any of the gameplay.
Shivering Isles was so much better than any of the shit they put out for Fallout 3. Operation Anchorage was lame, Broken Steel/The Pitt were mediocre, and Point Lookout was decent. But I can only go to so many dingy, run-down buildings and shoot so many radioactive enemies before they all look the same. And they all just had really weak backstories. Nothing even close to what you might find hidden away in some vault in the wasteland. Where's the attention to detail there? That's what made F3 so great.
...now if they did something like Shivering Isles, which had a completely different art style than Oblivion, that would have been awesome. Shivering Isles was BETTER than Oblivion. F3's DLC is just more of the same. Which is ok, I guess, but goddamn if it hasn't gotten old after putting like 100 hours into the game.
On the flip side, most games don't have 100 hrs of gameplay, even with $40 worth of expansions, so that's a plus for the game. Can't help but wish the DLC was more inspired, though...it doesn't help that the first bits of DLC were like 3 hrs long each. At least Point Lookout takes about 8 hours.

The Citadel, man, the Citadel. Yeah, more of a barracks than a town, but I sure as hell count it. There are plenty of people around if you just look for them.
I'm looking forward to the next expansion, but I for one want a Vault 77 expansion pack. :)

Well, I feel like I'm behind. Just about to finish the main game.
I'm super fast, I know. LOL
I might download some of the DLC, I never actually bothered to buy the game until a few weeks ago, which is another LOL. Can I even download them after completing the main game?

Sure. I just hope you haven't hit the level cap yet. If so, you might want to start a new character because you would have lost a lot of experiance you can't use to get to level 30 now.
The Broken Steel DLC also advances the game beyond the original ending.

I'm at level 15. I guess I'll buy Broken Steel. Can I wait until I finish the game normally?
Like I said, I rented this game and got to the point where you enter Vault 87. That was December. Bought it a week ago, started where I left off today, and I'm ready to start the final chapter.

As a player who has played through the game twice, I suggest that you do not rush through the experience. If you find yourself at the Jefferson Museum near what seems like the end of the game, GO EXPLORING. There are loads of missions outside of the main mission. You need to go on the Nuka Cola Quantum quest. You need to meet the ANT Agonizer. You need to find the game's best weapon in the Deathclaw Camp. And so much more... You can finish the main game in 15-20 hours depending on skill level. With the side missions, three times that. I discovered this the hard way when the game suddenly ended and I realized I'd have to go back to an old save to see all the stuff I missed.
If you have the Broken Steel DLC it's a non-issue, of course. And if you don't, be sure to save the game before "the end" so you can pick it up again later.
Fallout 3 is my favorite 360 game of all time. It is precious. I'd also place it in my top 10 of all time, though I need to let it settle a bit before I know where it fits in with all of the other crusty classics.

I'm going to buy Broken Steel and then finish a bunch of quests before I do the last mission.

Ain't that the truth.
I hit level 20 (the max at the time) somewhere mid-way through the original game. I've played through all four DLC's now and am only a level 28. If the level cap was 100 (for example), I would probably be level 40 or so by now. I had fun though, so it's not the end of the world. I still have the alien DLC coming up to hit level 30. I refuse to grind.

I finished the Point Lookout DLC a few days ago and that's me done every quest (+ maximum achievement points; 1450/1450) and at level 30 in the game. The DLC seems to be getting progressively better each time... I just wish they'd up the level cap a bit more often. Regardless, I've enjoyed every minute of this game and it's a joy to explore.
Point Lookout is actually more fun than Broken Steel but it won't be such an "essential" purchase for many people because it doesn't raise the level cap. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind restricting the experience the player can gain in what is a purely single player game. What would it matter if some of us were at level 50+???

I failed the Nuka-Cola Challenge because of a fluke. Would you believe a DEATHCLAW and then a Yao Guai spawned inside her house?
Ah well, I got the Kneecapper anyway.

I love bethesda and i buy almost all of their games on my PC now... I owned morrowind on my XboX and oblivion on the 360, but i have now both of them (and fallout 3) on my PC.
Why? Mods. More quests and places graphical upgrades, gameplay upgrades... Mods add a lot of re-play value to the games.
Why only Bethesda titles you ask? they have easy-to-use editors wich means that there are alot of good mods around the internet!

Just got done with the main quest line in PL. Wow the enemies are rather tough in this expanision. I was popping stimpacks like crazy. I would say this has been my favorite DLC so far, though granted I haven't gone through the Pitt yet so that might change.

This is definitely true. PC is most definitely the optimal platform for all Bethesda titles because of the mods that come out. It's amazing how much time people put into these mods. I would have bought Fallout 3 for PC but my lappy can't run it unfortunately. I'll probably pick up the GOTY edition for cheap when I build a new desktop in a few years.
Are the mods for Fallout 3 as advanced as those for Oblivion yet? I only ask this because there are some mods for Oblivion that completely transform the game.
