I have 2 7800s (a rev 1 and a rev 2). All 2600 controllers work fine with them except for the 7800 Prolines. When one is plugged in (happens with either console) it seems like something is shorted out. For example, when I have 7800 Asteroids in, the game automatically starts like if the fire button was being held and when the game is in play the ship keeps going into hyperspace making the game unplayable. When I use a 2600 controller, the game works fine. The rev 1 was originally mine and the rev 2 belonged to my friend. His has always had the problem since I got it from him along time ago. I also noticed that he had no Proline controllers, only these Radio Shack "Archer" (in store brand) controllers. It has a trigger button and a button on the top and they also have an autofire switch. I'm wondering if these controllers messed up something on both consoles because mine started to do the same thing after I got these controllers. Does anyone have any ideas on what to check inside the console?
