View Full Version : So did anyone ever figure out how to play PSX/PS2 imports on a PS3?

I never got into PS2 imports because the system isn't as import-friendly as Dreamcast or Gamecube. But, there are some that I'm interested in, and moreso for Playstation. Has anyone defeated the PS3's region protection on backwards-compatibility?

Nope, it can't be done.

I actually made a thread about this a while back. I wish it were do-able, but I guess I'll just have to break down and drop some cash on either a modchip/USPS2 or a JPNPS2.

The problem with that latter option is that I actually want to play European imports.

There is only one way: a 60GB PlayStation3 Test unit. If you can manage to get your hands on one of those you should be good to go (some games may require patching). And yes, that does mean it'll play burnt DVDs/CDs too. But you won't have Blu ray playback though.

There was a warranty-voiding swap trick that was functional back around firmware 1.50, but I have no idea if it still works. Honestly, it looked like a hell of a lot more trouble than it was worth.

Which PS2 games are you looking at importing? HDLoader is always a viable option (yay for no swapping!) and I believe the latest exploit doesn't even require a PS1 trigger disc to boot the ELF. Shame it (HDLoader) isn't really being updated anymore.

I really do wish that they had been able to nullify the region coding on PS1/PS2 games with the PS3. Silly legal department :( My next CPU upgrade in my PC will be based solely around what will run PCSX2 at the best possible speed.

Here's an idea

Install linux on it and use a PS1 Linux emulator

I so wish this could be done... but its impossible due they have Region Locks, as for PS3 games don't.. Unless their is a program out there that can remove region locks, its impossible.

Mainly Gregory Horror Show and Michigan: Report from Hell. But also a bunch of PSX games.

Does HD Loader work on the PS3? And does it work for PS1 games too?

Whah, nelly! TEST units do not play random burned discs... i don't recomend them for consumers.

What so nobody is even tempted to try my Linux install/emulator idea?

There is no access to the gpu from linux. A psx or ps2 emulator would run like crap

a disc door modified lite ps2 with swap magic 3 just keep the disc clean. it comes with both a cd-rom swap disc and a DVD-rom swap disc look it up only works for ps2 games try getting a moded ps1 unless you can find something like Gold Finger or something like that.

When you install Linux, there is no way of going back if doesn't work. Unless you restore the PS3.

You're actually incorrect. If something goes wrong or you can't figure out how to boot back to the PS3 OS, all you have to do is hold in the power button until it beeps twice, then let up-- it'll boot straight back into the PS3 dashboard thingy, no mess, no hassle.

If after that you wanna try again, all you do is switch your default os back to "Other." Worst case you just hold the button until it beeps twice again.
