Happened to be in Gamestop this weekend and while I was browsing the new DS games I spotted a game called Commando: Steel Disaster. I hadn't heard of it before but it looked like a good run and 'gun from the box. And believe you me it is. It's got a very Metal Slug feel to it, and nice anime style graphics. The first level starts with you riding a snowmoble(!) and attack enemies on jetpacks, the procides to the on-foot portion. You only have 1 life so after you run out of health you have start the level over. Its challenging too, I still haven't even made it to the first levels boss! I suggest giving this one a look for sure if your into side-scolling shooters, it should definatly hold you over onto Metal Slug 7 next month.

I was attracted to it because of the hot trailer posted on Youtube, with its MS style design and all.
Didn't like the game. Really crummy level design that's overly drawn out and far too punishing. Good if you like memorizing the shit out of tedious and lengthy levels, but otherwise a waste of time. Looking forward to seeing if the developers return to the genre again and improve on the game; It's happened before! CT Special Forces was pretty underwhelming but the sequels were pretty darn neat, after all.

I concur on the criticisms
It's pretty a pretty awful and shameless rip off of Metal Slug with horrible level design and really awful play control.
Metal Slug 7 launches soon in the US, wait for that.

Speaking of CT Special Forces, I've only 1 & 2 for GBA, but did any more get released in the U.S.
Interesting you guys didn't like it, maybe I just like it because its been way to long since I've found a DS game that interest me.
And to those who's played it, how's Legend of Kage 2?

Nemesis Strike for the Xbox was a CT Special Forces game, but more like a bad Rainbow Six clone. Other than that, I believe the other CT Special Forces games were Europe only.

I was bummed that we didn't get Bioterror. That game is totally import worthy (especially if you're a fan of CTSF2).
Any idea what the PS1 game was like? Was it just a PS1 version of Nemesis Strike or was it something else? There was apparently a PC version of it, which I'd love to play sometime (if I could find someplace to import it cheap, at least)

Commando Steel Disaster looks like something I would enjoy playing even though I don't have a DS yet. It's too bad when a developer sets the difficulty so high that it turns many people off, but others seem to relish extreme challenges. I'm more of the former type myself.
From what I've read about Commando, it does seem to have similarities with both the CT and Metal Slug games. I haven't played much Metal Slug, but I do like the PSX CT games. I've heard them described as a poor man version of Metal Slug games, but they came out of Europe and some people just feel that Japanese games are always superior-period. I rather enjoyed them and found them oddly kitchy.
From what I gather looking at some pics, the CT GB versions seem identical to the PSX games. And the Xbox Special Forces: Nemesis Strike is identical to the PS2 CT Special Forces: Fire for Effect in Japan and Europe, with a bit better graphics. Nemesis Strike took a third person view instead of side scrolling, but all the characters - Stealth Owl and Raptor are there. It acually makes references to some of the previous CT games, such as joking with Raptor about not opening his chute, which is the opening of CT Special Forces 3.

It's hard as shit, but well worth a play through. Now if I can get past the third stage without an aneurysm.... (sp?)

We were supposed to get CT Special Forces for the PlayStation just before games were cycled out of production. Alas, it was not to be. I was going to get Commando: Steel Disaster either way, but once I saw it looked like a Slug style game, I bought it immedately. It's next on my to play list once I get sick of Geometry Wars DS again.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to import CT SF 3 sometime.

Crap, I didn't realize the PS1 had ports of those three games. Awesome. Time to work the import angle and try to score some copies. The first one might have been really lackluster, but...eh...gotta have the set. :)
