Probably only a small handful of people here would care but Sierra is closing down the master servers for 21 of its older PC games beginning in November. One of these that is near and dear to my heart is Alien Vs. Predator 2.

There are a few individuals who are working on mod(s) to allow the game to use an alternate server. This would be great if this comes about. But even so (and despite my love for it) it is showing it's age. It is also badly in need of updates to keep the hacker kiddies at bay (don't you guys have anything better to do?)

Despite being released in 2001 there are atleast 50 - 150 people worldwide that still play it.

It crossed my mind about the possibility of writing a portable freeware version of a theoretical "alien vs. predator 3." My big concern is getting sued to high heaven by Fox / possibly even Sierra.

I know a similar scenario happened when some folks tried to stop a Chrono Trigger fan project from coming about.

Is there anything unusual I could try to make the project work? I obviously couldn't call it AVP, AVP 3, or Alien Vs. Predator. But how about a generic named such as "PVA", "MVAVP" or something like that? ;)

Yeah the movies sucked, I'll give you that. But AVP 2 is still a wonderful game after all these years.

how about instead of making a new game, you fix or upgrade the current one. as long as you don't use any of their code, you should be fine. use any of the doom engine remakes as an example

There's a reason why the term is "getting Foxed". Those guys are hardcore when it comes to protecting their Aliens IP.

Write a patch for AvP2 to work on alternate servers though, and you should be free and clear.

Totally agree that AvP2 is made of total win. IIRC, it was Monolith's best selling game until Condemned came out.
