View Full Version : What model Genesis/Mega Drive do you own??
Just thought I would check and see how gamers like us are hooked up with our Sega Genesis systems. Let me know what model you have(1,2,3,CDX,X-Eye) or whatever.
Also, let me know the video connection used(Composite, S-Video,Component,RGB). I personally have the X-Eye, using a SCART cable and a RGB-YUV transcoder to get component video on my American TV.
Thanks.

SEGA GENESIS CDX Multimedia CD-ROM entertainment system.
Composite video and stereo sound.
I like to play games using the headphone jack (there is a headphone jack and line out).
But I need to get a new power supply.
I also own a Asian Mega Drive model 2 (transcodified) with regional switch ...

I own quite a few of them, for testing purposes...
For leisure time, I'm most comfortable using a Genesis 2 + 32X and / or an X'Eye. I'm not particular about the video hookup, and am, in fact, simply running standard A/V into the back of a Commodore 1080 monitor.
The original model, without the TMSS BIOS, is clearly the preferred unit, as most people will say, but I keep the Genesis 2 out and going the majority of the time because, for one reason, its power and video plugs are interchangable with most of the other units.

Original Model 1 (no security chip probs) that's been modded with composite and S-Video. For my Sega CD enjoyment I have a Model 2 unit. I just have to remember to NOT hook up the S-Video for FMV games. Makes 'em look like more ass than they are :D .
I own a brand new Model 2 (never been out of the box......literally). I use any ol' Model 1 that works as a play console, using an RF.

Damn, that is f'ing sweet. No matter how rare something is, it seems like someone on this board always has one. As a collector, I love how Sega made so many kooky variations of the Genesis.
I use the original Model 1 I bought when the Genesis first came out. Have hooked to an old CRT set via the RF as the TV is too old to accept any other type of hook up. Retro Chic.

I have a model 1 Genesis that I got in 1990 that came with Altered Beast which is in storage so I can't look at it right now.
I have another model 1 Genesis right in front of me, it was from either 1990 or 1991, and because I don't remember the year I got it, I don't know if it came with Altered Beast or Sonic.
this one says MODEL No : 1601
SERIAL No : 30S38418
It's got the EXT port on the back (so does the other one).
note: it's possible, unlikely, but possible that the Genesis that I think is in storage is the one I have in front of me. They might've been swapped.
I used the first composite cable that came out, with mono audio
(yellow and white jacks) I got that cable in fall 1990 when I got a new 27inch Sony Trinitron XBR set.

I used to own (my first genny) a Model 3 bought brand new from my local mall's kb toys in 98 for 20 bucks. I now have a Model 1 (no HD graphics) I run it through official composite cables (I have rf also) wish I could get svideo mod or better but oh well. Love this machine though still! oh and as strange as it is I use a model 2 sega cd with it (model 1 cd looks so much better with model 1 genny and likewise for model 2 genny and cd)

Early model 1 (without TMSS), with model 1 Sega CD
Later model 1
Model 2
JVC X'Eye
Nomad
Pioneer LaserActive with Sega module

What I use most? The X'Eye. Can't beat the 2-in-1 combo.

A model 2 has a smaller cable end. This cable will not fit on a model 2. This end is of the same size as the adapter cable is for the 32X.

Actually, that one on the pic seems to be a NEC Family Video/stereo cable, Pc Engine or Turbo Duo perhaps....
Genesis model 1 systems use a 8 pin din A/V mono cable while Genesis model 2, CDX, 32X, Nomad, etc, use a 9 mini din connector stereo cable instead...

I have:
Original Genesis model one (Altered Beast) hooked up with the video moniter cables (composite a/v mono)
JVC X'Eye hooked up with regular composite stereo a/v cables BUT had recently had to use RF on an older TV to play Snatcher with the Justifier.
Genesis 3 hooked up RF in my daughters bedroom. (temporary unhooked as I had to use RF adapter for X'Eye)
My Genesis model one also utilize Power Base Converter for my SMS playing.
I just learned of some stereo audio cables that hook into the headphone jack from a fellow member here and will begin to use those after purchase from the Radio Shaq, so I can enjoy Genesis and SMS in stereo!

model 1 Genesis + model 1 Sega CD + 32X
composite video, stereo audio
other setups offer better video, but no other setup offers better audio
Stereo sound is output only through the headphone jack on model 1 systems and through AV out on model 2 systems, along with mono signal. Due to changes in the mixing circuit, early versions of model 1 output a much cleaner signal than later revisions of the hardware, which in comparision sound flat, muffled, and distorted.
When properly installed, the system mixes the Genesis, Sega CD, and if also installed, 32X audio into a single stereo output source. The stereo signal provided by the Sega CD unit is overall superior to the signal provided by the Genesis alone.

I run my original Model 1 purchased around 1990 (no HD Graphics) with a Model 1 Sega CD I recently acquired and my original 32X. Everything hooked up with a mono AV cable.
I also have two other Model 1's with the Model 2 Sega CD and RF connectors.
Two Nomads for travelling, and a Power Base converter (although I still have my Master System hooked up and use that instead; the PBc just looked neat).

I have two currently; a Model 1, and a Model 2 w/Sega CD 2. Though I've owned it at least 10 years longer than the other one, I currently tend to use the Model 2 mainly for CD games since getting the SCD last year (though I'll certainly use it for carts if it's hooked up). Otherwise I'll usually use the Model 1 for cart games.
Both still using RF unfortunately; only because I haven't had a chance yet to get anything better. Will probably fix that fairly soon.
