Frisky Tom

Just got this one in the mail. It's a Japanese Playstation "Arcade Hits" compilation with Frisky Tom and the sequel Tom's Strike Back. Frisky Tom is sort of a single-screen platform game, but there's no "jump"--all control is done with the d-pad. It apparently was developed as a prototype for the 5200, so maybe some of you 5200 fans have seen it... ;)

You can read a review covering the basic gameplay in the 5200 reviews section off of the DP main page. I would point out that the "toilet ball float" Backiel refers to in the review is something different entirely. The mice set you up the bomb! (with a long fuse) The mice light (and re-light) the fuse at times, forcing you to put it out before it goes off and destroys the water tank, which costs you a life.

The bathtub girl is in full effect, as is the bikini. She's a blonde cutie.

I've played one game of Frisky Tom so far, at normal difficulty, and I ended up feeling like some sort of gaming god, as I got to level 15 before my wife came in and stole the controller (i.e., ruined everything). I'll have to try the "hard" difficulty. Maybe I'll write up a review later. On first impression, I like it.

QUESTION FOR PDF: I know that Frisky Tom is part of the Nichibutsu Arcade Classics compilation. Does that compilation also contain "Tom's Strike Back"?

Aah..Frisky Tom. I used to play that game a lot in the arcades. :) It sort of lost it's appeal on my over the years though. :hmm: To answer your question, Nichibitsu Arcade Classics for the PSX does have Tom's Strike Back. However, Nichibitsu Arcade Classics for the Super Famicom only has Frisky Tom I think..

I've actually never even tried Frisky Tom on the psx, so I wonder how faithful it is to the arcade game. I DID however try Moon Cresta and I remember that it's gameplay seemed to be pretty off from the arcade version (I remember wider "swoops" of the aliens which throws you off if you're used to the arcade game) :P

Anyway, geting back to Frisky Tom, if you like the game, there are also GB ports and a vfd & lcd port :)

Good pics, NE1! Here's to hoping that Madrigal will make simulations of one or both those games.
There's an enhanced version of Frisky Tom on the Super NES Nichibutsu Arcade Classics collection, but I'm not sure if it's the same thing as Tom's Strike Back (I'll assume this is supposed to be a silly reference to the second Star Wars movie despite the different punctuation). What I do know is that Frisky Tom also exists as a cartridge for the original Game Boy. It's not terrible, but it is a bit lacking in comparison to the other versions.
