Just thought I would start another thread about something. Which version of the original Battletoads do you consider to be the best? The NES version was groundbreaking for its day and even had some parallax scrolling. However, the Genesis version has better graphics in hindsight even though they were minimal for the 16-bit console. I would say the Genesis version is better simply because its graphics are better even though it is hardly taxing the machine and the fact that the Genny version can more easily be played in S-Video, RGB or Component video. The latter is the main selling point for me. How do you feel?

I was always impressed with the Gameboy version.

If I had to pick between NES or Genesis, I'd pick NES.

Why? It pushes the hardware much more than the Genesis version, and that impresses me.

Genesis, if only for the fact that I only ever played it on Genesis when I was a kid.

a friend and I used to always argue over this. I had it for genesis he had it for nes. The nes version does push its hardware more but I always liked playing on genesis.

Isn't the Genesis version easier or something?

NES version hands down it just plays better, cant describe exactly how maybe if i get some time tonight ill pop them both in and do a side by side. however if your looking for a great battle toads experience on your genesis let me recommend Battletoads / Double Dragon.

Definitely the NES version, I've never played the Genesis version but I seem to remember people saying it was sub-par.

I'd go with the Genesis, the NES sounds better in the audio dept but the Genesis is smoother to play and just handles better overall.

And based on this you'd use the word "definitely?" I love the internet!

To those who have actually played both, would you agree that the difficulty is higher on the NES version?

I've never played the Genesis version, but I can tell you definitively that the WORST version of Battletoads is for the CD32. Virtually unplayable.

The genny version is good, I mean it IS still Battletoads... but somehow the NES had the right 'feel' to me for it. It always feels off playing Battletoads on a Genny.

I'll second Battletoads/DD on the Genny though. Teh awesome as the kidd0s say.

I always felt the genesis version was the more difficult of the two. For me thats just because the controls never felt quite right. I owned the nes version long before i owned the genny version though so it could just be that.

Speaking of Battletoads, that game is featured in one of my favorite Youtube clips... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nQsSLNskYc&feature=related

Warning, it's a bit crass, some language, but gets funny around 1:00 in.

I saw some battletoads game that was supposed to be some kinda arcade version, or maybe a hack, I dont know. But I remember it being a lot less cartoonish and a lot more violent. I'm talking about there definately being some blood. Somebody was playing it on an xbox at a local game shop and it was being emulated. What version was that?

that prank was kind of funny. Makes me want to do the same thing but kick it up a few notches.

Correct answer:

Whichever version contains Game Genie codes that will actually allow me to see the end of the game.

There was an arcade Battletoads game. It was pretty rare though.

For me, Nes version always impressed me. It was an example of what a programmers could do if given enough time with a system. The game still impresses me with its graphics.

Wow, I'd never heard of that. Without the cartoonishness of the NES game though, it feels more like a generic beat em up though.

Yeah, I prefer the Arcade game myself, but it is really a totally different game.

Entertaining until the N bomb was dropped.... then I stopped listening.

Anyway, NES version "feels" better to me.

I am the OP and I have been extensively playing the NES and Genny versions the last few days. After further review, I still cannot determine which one is better. The NES version does have 'tighter' control, but the Genesis version is lot more forgiving. The only reason I might take the Genensis version over the NES one is because my Genesis is modified for component video and s-video and my NES is not. Sounds like something former member Anthony1 would say...

I am definitely more of a fan of the NES version. Just because of how it pushed the system unlike the Genesis re-hash. Don't get me wrong, the Genesis one was good, and I do like the Genesis controller better, but NES was it.

First post . . . and it needed to be about battletoads (http://spiele.hitmeister.de/battletoads-in-ragnarok-180-s-world-game-boy-2435737/).

I always felt the NES version was slightly more playable somehow, i really dont like square joypads though so i'd still say Sega.

I don't think Battletoads really pushed the NES as much as you people are saying. I mean it doesn't look bad or anything, but it's not terribly impressive. Now, Battletoads Double Dragon, that was impressive for NES.

They play exactly the same, it's just a matter of graphics. Maybe sound comes into play, although I'm not sure on that one.

Yeah, I played the Genny version for probably a solid year (maybe even two, and that was several years after many NES version rentals as well) before I was able to beat the game. Endless amounts of frustration on the stupid rotating tower, the damned elevator shaft (level 8), and I FINALLY beat the stupid bitty at the end...

*SPOILER ALERT*

...and was given one of the worst, low-blow, unrewarding endings I have ever seen in a video game. I have never played it since. Literally, a one-screen, 5-second ending. I was more peeved then, than I had been in the entirety of playing the game over the previous 6 or so years.
Same goes for the ending for the impossible TMNT 1 for NES. At least then I used emulators so there was less time wasted. Ugh.

Heh. I may be incredibly weird, but I kind of like it when really hard games end with a "Congratulations!" screen.

I know I am bumping the oldest thread of all time here, but I couldn't let this go. I joined these boards just so I could post this.

This statement could not be further from the truth.

I've been on a huge Genesis/Sega CD kick these past couple of months, and it finally led me to try out Genesis Battletoads. While the graphics are colorful and pleasing, the game plays completely different from the NES versions. All your actions are floatier; they feel slippery and disconnected from the player. When a finishing move is activated like the Kiss My Fist, Big Bad Boot or Nuclear Knuckles they don't feel anywhere near as satisfying. The toads' momentum is off, the sound and graphic effects are weaker, and the enemies lazily glide off-screen. Running, jumping... movement in general just feels off. I could also go on and on with many smaller details that are different (and quite frankly lacking) but there's no need. To summarize: feels bad, man.

Yes, you do get a prettier game (despite some questionable artistic changes). You get an easier game, but mainly because it feels like you're constantly wading through a medium considerably thicker than air. Unfortunately I've yet to play Ragnarok's World on the GB, but barring that the NES version is far and away the best of these two. NES Battletoads might be very demanding but it has the tight controls to back it up. Most importantly, landing hits is extremely satisfying.

Both the Genesis and NES versions are pretty good, and I'd find it hard to choose between the two.

Stay away from the gamegear version, though. Even though it looks better than both, the controls are sluggish and beyond broken, and you move forward a lot every time you punch, making it hard to combo.

I'm horrible, but I say get all three versions. I have the NES and Genesis version and the SNES version is on the wanted list. If I were going to say which one to get first, I would say the NES version.

Are you referring to Battlemaniacs? That's a completely different game. Weird button swapping aside, it's great.

Crap!

No, I was actually going for the other one, Battletoads vs. Double Dragon. Probably because of the other thread recently, and I failed to read the title. Disregard my post as I only know the NES version, though the Genesis version is also on my wanted list.
