Hello. I purchased Sengoku for the AES "new" from sean kelly's store in chicago.

Everything in the box looked new. However, it would appear that the label for sengoku was placed atop whatever label was originally on the cartridge. I tried to see if I could safely peel it up to take a gander, but I don't think I could do it without causing damage.

What do you make of this?

My best guess would be that SNK ran to many with Japanese labels and just slapped a English label on it to sell overseas.

I highly doubt people would go to the trouble to bootleg or reshell and relabel
a Sengoku.

Unsold cart were returned to SNK who recycled the shells. Stick in two new PCBs and apply a new label: et voila, one new home cart.

This is not super common on the AES, but SNK did recycle some unsold cartridges and it was certainly widely practiced in the MVS world. Nothing to be worried about, it's still a legit game and a pretty fun one at that.

Well, I remember when the Neo came out, a local game rental store had one (best rental store EVER, yes...true to this day). Even the pack-in Nam 75 had a Japanese label under the American one. I believe their Magician Lord and Baseball Stars had the same.

So, I don't think these were recycled. Many came that way out the door.

I thought it was very curious.

As bust3d mentioned, you don't even need to slap in 2 new PCB's if you are not changing the game, since just about every Neo-Geo game is programmed for both English and Japanese speaking regions.

Maybe it's an MVS conversion. Though I don't know of anyone who has ever converted a relatively cheap title like Sengoku...
