View Full Version : Nintendo DSi - Dpad+Buttons
Anyone know if the new DSi has had any changes in the control department? The DS Lite has the worst D-Pad and buttons ever (IMO). I hope they put in something even a little bit more firm...because the Lite is much too mushy all around.

I havent heard anything about them changing the d-pad but with it being more thinner i think your gonna hate it even more but i would just wait and see since it comes out in Japan on November 1st theres probably gonna be videos of people showing it off.

I have no problem with the DS Lite's buttons, other than the Select and Start being too small.

Punctuation. It's your friend.
I think the DS Lite pad is better than the Genesis. I'm probably in the minority though.
Im just weird when it comes to good control I guess. I enjoy things like the original NES controller, the Sega Saturn controller, a proper arcade cab etc.. (BTW I have never held a Jaguar pad :D ) THe DS Lite just feels a little too sloppy...oh well, we'll just have to wait and see.

No, punctuation just makes your post not sound like an 11 year old typed it.
Anyway, back on topic, I never really had a problem with the D-Pad on the DS Lite so I'm not too worried about a change. Although, I would like to see the buttons get a face lift and get a little more 'clicky.'

Clearly both men who have never had a gamecube controller in hand, and hey i like the jaguar d pad! But actually if you want the worst d-pad in history I'm giving that honor hands down to the Watera Supervisions' control diamond of mushy doom.

Meh, I'll take the DS Lite d-pad over the one on the 360 controller.

Agree. I've never had a problem with the DS, but the 360 is highly inaccurate.

Try the new red 360 controllers - better D-pad!

Hasn't been mentionned yet... but the SMS D-Pad has been linked to several hand related cancers.
And yeah the gamecube controller is awful.

lets tone that last one down a notch gamecube controller overall is pretty good two complaints horrible rocker style d-pad and that fucking z-button. other than that its comfy and easy to wear just like shorts. the l & r triggers rock with that recessed finger groove and the c stick beats the hell out of the c buttons.

I've never held a Jaguar controller but the 360 controller is my least favorite ever. Most people talk about the horrible D-Pad but the other things I hate are the buttons A, B, X, and Y. They feel like something on an old 80s toy you'd find in GoodWill. Very stiff.
I love the GameCube controller (except the D-Pad)...and the D-Pad and every button on the DSLite.

I personally don't mind the ds lights controls, if i had to complain about anything on there it would be the shoulder buttons just because theyre rather square and utilitarian.
contra 3 was clearly broken on the DS due to the inability to snap to, and maintain a diagonal.
Nintendo, let your d-pad go! Hell, i know you willy wave your 'cross design' patent around, and yup, sure it's iconic - but listen to the people calling for change.. they aint on about a
new president you know.

listen, my friend(s) let me give you a little straight talk. The d pad is not broken the greed and corruption on game street is to blame here. what your going to wind up with is a rocker type directional control and that's not change we can believe in. I would know i was a prisoner of war and i have the callouses to prove it.

I'm just happy that they didn't put a complete keyboard on the Jaguar controller.
For those of you wondering about the answer to my post someone has finally talked about the DPad and buttons on the new DSi. From IGN's Mark Bozon:
But outside of just "having it, because that's what you do," there are still some real reasons to consider the system. For me, the d-pad and buttons on the DSi are enough of a reason on their own. I love the clickly feeling of the SP and original DS buttons, I can't stand the squishy, unresponsiveness of the DS Lite, but of course yield to the new design since, well, it doesn't require wheels and a pull-handle to move around.
Great news for me and anyone else who thinks the control on the DS Lite is shit. Preordered it the other day. :)

I have no problem with the D-Pad, but man, the L and R buttons have to go. The way they are set makes it very awkward to use.

The improved d-pad is reason enough for me to get the DSi. I'll finally be able to play Contra 4!!! I've owned it for a long time but can't play with that shitty DS Lite d-pad.

I heard the Jaguar controller wasnt too bad if you ignore the number pad insert area...

I agree, but how else could Nintendo implement them without changing the compactness of the DS's design?
