Of this list, I've knocked off Origins, FF13, Neptunia and sold the White Knight collection. Have added Dragon Age II, Dragon's Dogma, Ni no Kuni & FF13-2.

Since that post, have added To The Moon. Have also returned to FF13. Wanna 100% it, then move on to FF13-2, as I'm looking forward to Lightening Returns.

Another RPG about to be added to my list. I just started the Bravely Default demo and after completing all the quests, I've since preordered the game. Very good game in my opinion.

Finished Mass Effect 2 not sure what I am going to play next. Wasn't totally impressed with the game. Don't get me wrong it was a good game just not as good as the hype.

Any suggestions for another 360 RPG to play?

Also started Bravely Default. Hope I finish it, loving it so far (about 20 hours in).

Hey since my last post in this thread, I knocked off more RPGs and adventures:

18. Final Fantasy II - NES
19. Final Fantasy III - NES
20. Golden Axe Warrior - SMS
21. Ys - SMS
22. Golvellius - SMS

And I have added Miracle Warriors for SMS to my currently playing section. With the age of the games listed here, I would say this is quite a lot of progress. These 8-bit RPGs are hard for some people to go back to but can be fun if you put yourself in the right strategy solving mindset.

What kind of RPG do you like? Strategy, Japanese, action, hack n slash...?

Here are the RPGs I own on the 360: Tales of Vesperia, Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 1-3, Bioshock 1 and 2, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Oblivion, Dark Souls, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dungeon Siege III, Eternal Sonata, Diablo III (I actually own it for PS3, but the console versions are vastly superior to the PC version -- the control scheme is just that much better), Nier, Resonance of Fate...

I personally really liked Dragon Age Origins, and even the second one wasn't that bad (although not as good as the first one). I'm certainly getting Inquisition this fall! And of course, Skyrim is Skyrim.

I also really like Eternal Sonata, a JRPG set in a dying Chopin's dreams, but if JRPGs really aren't your thing, YMMV.

And if you're into hack-n-slash, Kingdoms of Amalur and Dungeon Siege III are pretty good entries in the genre.

Eh just noticed I never posted on this one. I don't have a huge list though, just some long standing annoyances I never get around to.

- Lufia II (have had this maybe 2 years almost now, never played it)
- Fire Emblem (3DS, Wii and GC) all not played
- Bravely Default (playing now)
- Pokemon Y (do not plan to finish, I just like to brainlessly battle in the wild on occasion)
- Chrono Trigger (SNES)
- Dragon Warrior IV

Action/Adventure RPG style games
- Zelda (Link Between Worlds, Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, Four Swords) all unfinished
- Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (playing, got over last weekend)
- Faria

I re-purchased Skies of Arcadia Legends and Tales of Symphonia on the same day about a year ago, would like to replay this eventually. Also many months or more ago I attempted to start playing Earthbound again but it wore me out around Moonside, would like to see it to the end someday too.

To be straight up honest I don't see myself probably ever finding the tie to finish Skyward Sword and definitely not Twilight Princess. The Fire Emblem games are so time consuming they're just being stored until my kid is old enough for kindergarten and being more independent or something where she'll be out of my hair for the day and I can find the time.

FF 2-6 (sorry, 1 is unplayable to me)

Any good Breath Of Fire on PS1 (are there any post BoFs on GBA?)

Finish Golden Sun 1, then play 2 and any other good ones there may be.

Suikoden (sp?) games.

Chrono Trigger (never played it, saving it for last:))

Earthbound 2

Any good SNES-PS1 games I can get my hands on.

Dragon Warrior or whatever you call them games

Blue Dragon, just because I hear it actually has a world map. JRPGs need to bring that back.

Super Mario RPG

Finish Deus Ex 1, get Deus Ex HL

Mass Effect 3

Shining Force 3

Sounds less like a backlog and more like games you're interested in, or a request for recommendations. You'll find some JRPG threads in the classic games area of the forum.

Sad thing is I am into them all hehe. I can't get enough of gaming in general. If i could win the lottery and play all day and night I probably would.

I started up Mass Effect 3 to see how it all ends even though I could go back and try it many different ways and see different approaches to how it ends I am not going to do that. I think I am going to play The elder scrolls series next starting with Morrowind on X-box and work my way up to ESO when it comes out this June on PS4. I do love seeing all the older RPG's getting love on this site. I loved the Lufia series and the eye of the beholder series. Wish they would make a remake of them someday.

Adding further to my RPG back-log, I picked up a copy of Persona 3 FES in the Gamestop PS2 sale. I'm actually a few hours into it. It's okay, but the amount of scripted events in the first hour of 'gameplay' was really obnoxious.

Gamestop PS2 sale?

75% off all (remaining) PS2 titles. Persona 3 FES was $30. So I got it for $7.50.

Finished Bravely Default two weeks ago. It was good, but it wasn't as good as I thought it'd be based on the demo. The whole brave and default system was to add strategy to the game, and while it did add somewhat of a strategy to bosses, most of the time during bosses it'd be stock brave and then go all out. Against all random battles, you may have to put a little bit of strategy behind some or use one turn, then go all out the second turn, but just about all of them would be finish the battle in one turn with -4 brave. They may as well have just given an option to receive experience, money, and job points when you should have went in a battle instead of actually requiring you to fight the battle. The customization is also fairly weak especially after five hours in when attack magic becomes useless and doesn't get useful again until you master a job class and get a few higher leveled around 30+ hours in. So a more efficient team is two attackers and two healing/support classes.

It's a good game simply because it's better thtan most RPGs today, and that's not saying much because most RPGs released in the last gen were pretty bad. It's not nearly as good as the classics it was modeled after.

Unfortunately it is the last day of my full Sega Genesis month and Phantasy Star II is not yet completed so it will be joining my backlog for play on weekends while the SNES takes over on weekdays. I also made friends with someone else in the complex at work to spend some time with on breaks so I might spend a little less time gaming and more time watching movies over there.

"Last Dream" which I bought from Steam is likely headed to the backlog. I haven't been giving it 100% attention when I go to play games; I typically trot it out when I'm listening to a podcast but that's about it. I'll probably just play it a little bit at a time, and after six months I'll finally finish it, lol.

I've made a list before, earlier, but here's a long list of everything last gen and current gen. Games I've started but then stopped, games I've started and have no plans of finishing, and games I've finished. Maybe I'll add past gen games to this list. If I don't own it any longer it won't be on this list whether I beat it or not.

Sounds like you can't keep up with RPG's fast enough either :)

Too many games too little time.

I have maybe 5 hours left of Mass Effect 3 and loving the conclusion to the trilogy thus far. Not totally sure which one I will choose next.

Either finish Dragon Age 1

Demon Souls
Morrowind
or may just start up a different genre.

With over 3,000 games at my disposal I have plenty to choose from. Plus I am an MMO addict as well with ESO just coming out and FF XIV just out on ps4 that may sidetrack me a bit.

I do not envy some of those backlogs.

My backlog is:
Star Ocean : Second Story
Tales of Destiny II (Eternia)

I want to get Harvest Moon 64, so that too.

Im currently doing a run of Final Fantasy VII, finished it before, but i want to kill the Weapons without KotR. Recently (this year and late last year) finished both Persona 2s and Fire emblem: New mystery of the Emblem (translation) on emulator.

Morrowind
Dragon Age
Last of Us

Any suggestions between the 3?

I haven't played The Last of Us, but Dragon Age is the better of the other two. Depending on what you own it for, I recommend PC > 360 > PS3. There are some bugs that make certain skills not work on the console versions and then for PS3 it's got some pretty bad framerate issues, although I'd still recommend playing the PS3 version if that's all you have because it's a great game. The PC version is the only one that gives you the overhead view making it easier to control the characters in battle. Just like Mass Effect, the ai is dumb. I finished Dragon Age Origins on the PS3, bought the PC version because it's one of the best games of last gen.

How's everyone's backlogs?

Tanooki

From my bulleted list from awhile back...

Lufia untouched still, Fire Emblem (all versions sold due to lack of time), bravely default unfinished, pokemon Y same, CT and DW4 untouched since last. Zelda same on all but skyward I sold off when I happily dumped the Wii. Spike is done and sold, Faria no change. I've made it a point not to add RPGs to the pile.

Personally not sure what to do with those I have. At some rate I'm going to have to either sell or keep Lufia II as it's not fair to let it sit when someone else would like it. Pokemon Y I'm maybe going to let go of, just not sure, as I also have Fire Red for casual furry rat catching fun. BD, CT, DW4, Faria and the Zelda's are going nowhere.

Skies and Tales on GC I'd still like to hit again someday, good memories keepers either way. I have to be honest with myself, Twilight Princess was never that fun so I may just let it go. Really I could use the dough. My wife is using my 7 year old PC which works great other than Vista crippling it and I'm on 3 years on this laptop and I know I can' get away with budget $ to a laptop, so I'd have to flip my current collection and anything I luck into at this rate anymore to get there. Sure I got pop Bonk and Bubble Bobble 2 off the shelf but that's not happening.

I stopped on BD so long ago I think I'd probably just replay the game at this rate if the need popped up. The thing is annoyingly the game has fallen into the trap of Square with the FF franchise. You can take down 2/3 of the game or more, but then the boss fights get so stupid cheap you need to be psychic, die a lot, or cheat(get guide, buy guide, have someone do it, watch video) to know what move you can do, and all the ones you can not with specific jobs/subjobs set up or you just get your ass handed to you. I'm up near the fire temple, I think I was up around that singing bimbo with all the status conditions. I remember being fed up with that and going to play another game.

How's everyone's backlogs?

Not bad, not bad at all. 2013 I managed to knock out 13 SNES RPGs. Yeah, that's something that will never ever happen again. I somehow managed to beat one every month, and that decreased my backlog tremendously.

2014 haven't played/beaten as many RPGs but I just got through Shadowrun (not really an RPG but I count it as an ARPG) and am currently 8 hours into Secret of Evermore. Getting excited because my SNES RPG backlog now remains:

1. Harvest Moon
2. EVO
3. 7th Saga
4. Inindo (yes, I want to eventually play through this one)

US side only. I'm almost done! Oh and then there are ARPGs or adventure games I still want to beat, like Ys III, Equinox, Addams Family Values, Young Merlin, etc.

celerystalker
11-17-2014, 05:10 AM
Y's III won't take you long, Steven. I sat down to try it finally last year and beat it in about 3 hours. Grind out a few levels at the beginning and you'll be golden.

I quit keeping a backlog, because my RPG play almost always follows the same pattern as many others, I suspect.

1) I buy the game.
2) I start playing one day and get a few hours in, anywhere from 2-20 in a few days.
3) I get in the mood to play something else or life gets busy and abandon it.
4) A few years later I think about it, put the game back in.
5) 90% of the time, I only vaguely remember what I was doing and decide that to truly enjoy it, I need to start over.
6) This time, I either get tenacious and finish it or the cycle repeats itself.

Rarely do I finish an RPG the first time I intend to, but the few that I do are the ones I end loving and recommending, either because they were captivating enough to keep me hooked or short enough to be a pleasant diversion.

Honestly, I'd love to see some other people's recommendations using that criteria: games they beat on the first attempt, games that they walked away from and returned to and finished, and at the bottom the "maybe someday, but not todays."

The Adventurer
11-17-2014, 05:36 AM
Dark Souls was the first 'RPG' to grip me for a full 65 hour first play through. That has not happened in a while.

Current backlog has grown recently with the additions of Arc the Lad - Twilight of Spirits (PS2), Disgaea 2 (PS2), and Shiren the Wanderer (Wii).

On top of the old backlong of...

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturn (PS2)
Devil Survivor Overclocked (3DS)
Disgaea (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
Rune Factory 4 (3DS)
Dragon Quest V (DS)
Final Fantasy III (DS)
Radiant Historia (DS)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
Rogue Galaxy (PS2)

and to many others I picked up 'just because' without any real plan to play them any time soon. Like Sands of Destruction (DS), YS 1 & 2 Collection (DS), and Baten Kaitos (GCN)!
