I was searching to give my spare Ghostbusters II (GB) box a partner (game and manual) and I stumbled across something that boggles my mind...where there two variations of the same game?

Here is variation #1:

Variation #2:

The box I have resembles the second variation. My box is definitely the US version (checked and double checked, just in case), so why the two variations? I tried to check each one as close as possible and both seem to the US editions.

Wha???

To take a wild guess: perhaps Activision found out partway through the run that they didn't have the license to use pictures of the actors on the label, and thus had to change it?

The Ghostbusters label with the four actors says "DMG-GB-USA", while the one with the logo only says "DMG-GB-USA-1".

It's probably a reprint.

Isn't that based on the Japanese Famicom "New Ghostbusters 2", rather than the horrific American NES version?

Yep, that's the one.

Not to be confused with The Real Ghostbusters GB game that came out much later, which was actually a Japanese Mickey Mouse game originally (and a Garfield game in Europe.)

exactly, one is the Activision game known from homecomputers which is awful, the other one is based on New Ghostbusters 2, a nice top-down-GB game

Weird they would put out two different games with the exact same name. I may have to track down the black label version and give it a whirl.

It's ironic to see the Activision label on those games considering they weren't interested in publishing the new game that's being developed.

No... Unless I am gravely mistaken, the two Game Boy games in the OP are indeed exactly the same game.

The US NES game entitled Ghostbusters II is the one that is completely different from the Game Boy Ghostbusters II.
