Hi DP \\^_^/

I have a pal megadrive 1 and Mega CD 1, my mega cd has just died showing the symptoms of the F1 fuse blowing.

Ive tested the mega cd with a spare mega drive 2 i have, but it still doesnt work.

Inside, the F1 fuse is still intact, however ive found an unlabelled resistor showing no continuity on the underside of the main board, could that be my problem?

Its light Green with a thick red band, a gold band, a purple band and two more gold bands.

I havent been able to search out any information.

Thankyou

You could replace it, if you wish.

Can you take a picture of the resistor? As close as possible? That way we can try and determine the correct resistance (ohms).

Another (really strange) thing to check is something I accidentally discovered while working on my friend's SegaCD:

Check the battery. If it isn't connected on both top and bottom, the SegaCD also won't power on. Just make sure that that's securely connected. Might be silly, but might as well try it.

EDIT: Also, just noted that this was your first post-- welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the help :)

The battery looked secure, it didnt seem to move anyway, ill recheck.

Thats as close a picture i can get with my camera, any closer and it goes blurry, ill have a go shooting through an external lense, ill get a better pic somehow!
Its the colour of the gold stripes i cant quite make out, im sure of the red and purple ones though.

The cd unit itself is dead when i switch the megadrive on, but if i remove and replace the power plug, the power and cd lights flash once briefly the first time the megadrive is switched on, then its back to deadness.

I can get on with modding it a bit once this is fixed, it really kills gameplay running at 50hz.

Okay, the battery seems secure and attached both beneath and above, ive had limited sucess getting a better picture of the resistor:

This taken in macro, zoomed in and with a magnifying glass lol

And this, placed directly onto a flatbed scanner, i couldnt get a clear image, perhaps its wasnt close enough to the glass plate, i stuck post it notes round it to reduce reflection anyhow.

Its a nightmare trying to make the colours out.

That isn't a resistor, it's a capacitor.

According to the colors I could make out (red, violet, brown, silver, gray) it's a 27nf 8% axial capacitor.

Thankyou, i had no idea :embarrassed:

From the top side this is what it connects to:

I bodged the colours of the capacitor on to show its orientation.

Theres no continuity on the top side between the cap negative leg and the black polo thing with wire wrapped round it - sorry i dont know the terminology

The FB17 fuse on this board is okay too.

Im still searching for a compatible replacement for the dead capacitor.

Cheers

could you send a pic of the power bourd as i remember theres voltage regulator
i have a sega mega cd mk1 my self test with muilt metre should be 5v
to find the parts try www.farnell.co.uk hope you can get it to work again

Well i had a probe around it with the power connected, although the F1 fuse shows continuety its not letting voltage through.
I've tested two megadrive adaptors and they show 13.4v so I'm not going to try bridging it to test, I'll just replace it, or possibly put one in that will give it 10v not 13.4!

I think I need a new multimeter lol I had a festoon bulb from my car showing continity, the filament is intact but it wont light up with 12v, its like the twilight zone or something.

I tried maplins, farnell and RS online but none had that axial thing on the underside of the board, so I'm ignoring that until ive replaced the green F1 fuse. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help :)

i will check mine with capacitor meter
