i cant seem to get my r4 to work and i lost the installation cd.. any clues for patches?

The CD would be pretty useless anyway since it's firmware is way out of date.
Get the english 1.18 firmware here http://r4ds.cn/download/r4.html
put your SD card into your PC, put the files from that download onto it, then it should be up-to-date and working, assuming there's nothing wrong with your R4 or your card.
