All,

Just got an email today from Microsoft letting me know that I could download the new dashboard anytime after 2PM EST today. I waited until around 5PM and finally installed it. Took about 30 minutes total to download and install it. All I can say is its a drastic change from the original dashboard. I thought the avatars were pretty cool and there were quite a bit of customization you can do to them(Much better than the Mii's). Just wondering if anyone else installed it or had a chance to see it first hand? What are your thoughts? What do you like/dislike?

Looks similar to Sony's style, except you don't go left and right then up and down. It's reversed.

I guess they are trying to make it match the Windows Media Center.

So, is it true that you need a hard drive or large memory card for this update?

I have an original premium system with a 20GB HDD. The download took about 10 minutes and it took 15-20 minutes to install. I would be almost certain you need some sort of external storage(HDD or memory card) to install the new dash.

That's what confuses me. I thought all of that was stored in firmware, otherwise how could you update the dashboard in a core system?

I thought the system itself had built in memory on board but the new NXE needed twice as much space as the board provided so thats why they are offering arcade and core owners discounted HDD's and free memory cards.

I see. I wonder what happens when you boot up the core/arcade without the memory card installed, but after the update.

It might still prompt you to update but fail when it tries to download. Also, it might not let you sign into LIVE after the update? Not sure, guess we will find out in 2 weeks or so.

How much space exactly is needed? I've still got plenty of room but with my crappy broadband, it's the dl time that concerns me.

I think I read somewhere between 120-160MB download.

Thats what its suppose to be around. Wish I could have gotten in on the early use.....oh well.

Ah, 160MB isn't a big deal, I was worried it'd be up in the 1GB territory for some reason.

When do us lowly stupid proles get access to this? I've been dying to watch my Netflix cue on my 360 and I've been waiting around for what seems like forever for this update.

With the bandwidth limits that cable/broadband companies are starting to impose, the downloadable Netflix feature is going to be obsolete in less than a year.

I've been wondering the same thing. The companies are making so we can watch it, then the ISP restrict how much we can download.

Welcome to the rest of the world, its that bad in countries like australia that we arent even getting access to downloadable movies, its completly blocked off.

Its hard when fror $99.95 aud you get 25gb data usage and thats downstream and upstream.

Am I also the only one thats not interested in the new NXE and only see it as a stupid marketing
gimmick from MS as they have very little big first party titles this christmas?

I don't suppose anyone knows if the NXE adds .mkv support?

Really? That's lame. That was really the only substantial thing about this update. I think the appearance of the new dashboard is friggin' ugly compared to what they've got now (which isn't exactly earth-shatteringly cool, either). And I personally hate the idea of the Mii-clones. The gamerphotos are way cooler IMO.

Got an e-mail today saying that the "New Xbox Experience" will be up for everybody on November 19th, for those who are interested.

November 19th can't come any faster. I've always hated the blades interface. The new dash looks really sleek and a lot smoother. :-D

Do we really need avatars? I mean I like the Wii and all, but Microsoft Mii's?
Why?

Dude, totally weak.

So do I get my m$ points back for the themes that I actually purchased that completely become obsolete with this update?

Not cool.

Sure it looks fun, but I have actually invested money in the old firmware, so unless I get some of that money back, I am going to do everything I can to avoid this update (including not signing into live anymore).

Here's a few pics I took myself when I got home :)

Here's what awaited me when I powered on my 360:

Here's the update:

Here's my 360, doesn't it look excited? :D

Oohh.. she's done:

A starting point for the avatars:

I'm done with my avatar, here's the NXE:

After the update, I had to reinstall the additional media update:

But, after I reinstalled it, it worked just fine:

I notice that I don't have Netflix available on my console - is this because my locale is set to Canada?

I got my invite yesterday and just installed it the update. It took about 5 minutes before I was able to start customizing my avatar.

The new dash is decent, nothing terribly special, and I couldn't care much less about avatars that will serve as little more than an excuse for Microsoft to nickel and dime the gullible in the near future. The biggest thing I'm looking forward to is the Netflix Watch Instantly via the 360, so I don't have to rely on the crappy torrent box's wireless card to pull a decent signal. Unfortunately, I keep getting errors when I try to get it started.

I do like that you can hide the set of 'welcome' menus, I only wish they would let you do the same for spotlight, events, and a few of the other tabs I'll never use. I understand those two tabs are marketing, but I'm paying for the service, so you'd think they'd let you opt out.

edit: I was able to get the Netflix to work, and the interface and setup are clean and simple. Once you download and install the Netflix plugin, you're given a short code that you have to activate on Netflix's site, which took about a minute to complete. Once you add something to your instant queue it takes a few seconds to show up on the 360's instant queue.

Video quality is pretty good so far, somewhere between VHS and DVD quality, but it's important to note that my roommate's girlfriend is watching something else on Netflix Watch Instantly in the living room from the PC connected to the TV there, so I'm not getting optimal quality.

You can still use the themes and still use your avatars. They just look a little bit different. Microsoft stated this and everyone I know that has gotten the update says everything is stil l there. You can choose to use the avatar for a gamerpic or you can still use the old ones. So not to worry, you themes can still be used. Matter of fact if you look at Coldbeers display he GTA theme is still being displayed.
