Do any of you guys/gals here have kids? If so what was the first classic system and game they played?

My son played Ms. Pacman on my CDX, and he loves snes.

I've got a 10 year old and an 8 year old, and they both love all my old school gaming stuff. Of course, they would prefer Halo or Gears of War, but they have played my 2600, Genesis, Dreamcast, and just about any of the other systems.

Also, when I still owned my full arcade standup Robotron and Stargate games they LOVED those! The big controls, buttons, screen, loud sound - they loved em...

Back to your question, I would say the first classic system they played would be the Genesis, and probably played either Sonic or maybe Ms. Pacman, as they were probably only like 1 -3 years old at the time.

Good topic by the way!

My 3 year old just discovered the old Star Wars vector game, which he loves. It's not real old, but he's crazy over DoDonPachi. Anything with spaceships, airplanes, or cars (1942, R-Type, Top Gun.) He also likes Toad, so Super Mario Bros. 2 is a good one (although he doesn't like me to hurt the Shy Guys.)

He did just have a rough education about old games, though. He found an Odyssey 2 game with a picture of a spaceship on it and was real excited to play it. When I loaded it up, he stared at the screen for a couple of minutes and then retrieved the box and told me, "No, Daddy, this game." I told him that the square on the screen WAS that ship, but he wasn't buying it. We discussed that one for awhile.

I have a 5 year old daughter. First game she ever played was Sonic 2 for the Genny. I guess she was 3.

She like's videogames - especially the 16-bit Sonic franchise - a lot, but I don't let her play as often as I should, because she gets excited and ends up abusing my poor systems - and, therefore, she haven't quite got the hang of it yet. She isn't that patient either, and gives up after dying twice, three times. But she's growing more and more interested...

I def catch him before it pulls on the cable to the tv tho, that lil man sure get excited with them tv games on that magic box.

When my son was big enough to do so circa 1998 he'd sit in my lap while I played MAME. But it wasn't until 18 months or so later when I got my first Genesis that he played his first "classic" game, which was Primal Rage.

He turns 11 this month, and has made a mental progression from being interested in dinosaurs to reptiles. Even at this tender age he speaks of a future where he moves to Florida to study herpetology and zoology, preferably with alligators. His mother doesn't want to admit that this passion for scientific study has its root ultimately in a videogame, but I know the truth of it.

That is really cool! She will admit it sooner or later ;)

My son is almost 14 months old, so he's not playing yet...but he shows lots of promise. He likes to pull Odyssey2 and PS1 games down from their respective shelves and bring them to me, and he likes the little Jakks Pacific plug 'n' play joysticks (he has no idea that they do anything, but he likes to walk around with them, with the added bonus that the cats will follow him anywhere that he carries something with a trailing cable behind it).

Last night he was clinging tenaciously to a PS1 controller that he found somewhere (I don't know how he finds half of this stuff!) while watching a Sesame Street DVD in my game room. Hey dad, what's the fatality move combo for Cookie Monster?

One other thing - if I'm working around the house during the day (I stay home with him) and he's wandering around and getting out of earshot, I'll hand him the official CGE 2k5 Dragon Boy. That bloody thing makes enough noise that I can tell exactly where he is in the house. LOL

My daughter is 8. When she was younger she started playing SMB and SMW mostly but it took her a while to get past the first level. But now she can play pretty much anything in my collection with me and I don't have to worry too much about taking it easy on her. Lately we've been playing Star Wars Battlefront II. Since that's the only "shooting game" that mom says is ok.

My wife's cousin and her 9 year old son recently moved in with us and that has been more of a problem. His mom hasn't taught him to take care of stuff so that has forced me to make a bunch of ridiculous rules, like put back the game your playing before you take another one out, and do not remove any games from the game room, etc...

But all their friends love to come over because they all know that I have a ton of games, and I also have a projector in the game room, so playing on a huge screen makes it even better for them.

I have two daughters of the ages of 7½ and 1½ (both have birthday in April)

My older daughter enjoys very much to play games. Her favorites are:
Pokemon Pearl (DS)
Mario Kart (DS)
Kirby (all of them)

and to a lesser degree:
Batsugun
Raiden Fighters 2
DonPachi

Sometimes we play matches in Mario Kart Wii as well as Super Smash Bros. Brawl/Melee

My young daughter enjoys to play around with arcade sticks and is now trying to shove carts into the NES LOL. I cannot play games with the arcade stick when she is around as she demands to be in my lap and to play around with the stick and buttons.

Ahaha shoving carts in ahhh yes. My son tried that on sunday again trying to put SF2 champions edition in the cdx while pulling out Alladin out the ALREADY ON CDX Oo/ I was like ohhhh no, no, you don't do it like that. He is liking sports now too, so he loves MLB Power Pros on the Wii. Mario kart is next!
Surprises me how quick he is learning all this. I don't remember my generation (I'm 29) being that smart at that age hehehe!

I have a young cousin, 9 years old now, who has been playing games for the past few years. Whenever he comes over he always asks to play Gunstar Heroes, Kid Chameleon, Earthworm Jim, or Ristar.
