Got this rather amusing ad sent to me by Playstation Underground today:

Next thing you know they'll be trying to explain how it's a 512-bit machine and not just 128-bits.

How long before Atari tries to go after this like when they tried to sue the guy who made a Breakout-clone on the iPhone app store?

Is this Sony's response to Nolan Bushnells history of bashing them? Lol.
2005:

The 3D controller that Nintendo is onto is a very good idea, he says. If you look at today s controller with triangles, Xs, squares and circles, it s scary. It s like a keyboard. People are interface phobic.

2006:

I think Sony shot themselves in the foot... there is a high probability [they] will fail. The price point is probably unsustainable. For years and years Sony has been a very difficult company to deal with from a developer standpoint. They could get away with their arrogance and capriciousness because they had an installed base. They have also historically had horrible software tools. You compare that to the Xbox 360 with really great authoring tools [and] additional revenue streams from Xbox live... a first party developer would be an idiot to develop for Sony first and not the 360. People don't buy hardware, they buy software.

2008:

I think the Wii by Nintendo is getting games that once again are fun for people who don’t want to make a career out of figuring out how to run a 47-button controller.

Well this is how one saves the $250 bucks.... It's a Sony & Amazon deal.

You get 50 bucks back when you buy a system (off Amazon) and a game from the list (LBP, MotorStorm:PR, Resistance 2, Resistance 2CE, Buzz Quiz TV Bundle, Singstar 2 Bundle, NBA 09 The Inside or SOCOM Confrontation Bundle.

OR

you get 100 bucks back when you buy a system and 2 Blu-Ray movies from the list Iron Man 2 Disc, Incredible Hulk, Transformers 2 Disc, Indiana Jones & the Crystal Skull, Sleeping Beauty 2 Disc, Nightmare Before Xmas, Speed Racer, Batman Begins, Blade Runner, I Am Legend

AND

you get a $150 buck Credit (gift) Card, if you apply and are approved for the Sony Card (some kind of Credit Card) along with 12 months 0% interest.

I'm not sure if you get the 150 buck bonus card if you only do the movies, or if its either the movies or the game. The email is a smidge vague, and i've got no desire to buy a neutered 80Gig to find out for you guys.

He should know, he's the one that designed the Amiga CDTV. Another high priced machine that didn't quite match up with consumer expectations.

I'm going to move your quote over to the "Was Nolan right" thread so I don't derail this thread.

Where's the Atari Jaguar?

This question actually somewhat validates PS3's appropriation of the "Do The Math" line, as I guess there just aren't enough Jag fans around anymore to care.

"Do The Math" line was Atari's motto for the Jag, promoting its alleged "superiority" over its contemporaries such as SNES, Genesis etc. (example (http://www.cyberroach.com/jaguarcd/pics/true0203.jpg))

Now for full disclosure, I am a Jaguar fan with over 40 titles to my name, but still I never cared much for the "Do The Math" logo. Do the math?! Fer cryin' out loud, if I wanted to math, then I'd be doing my homework right now instead of playing videogames .

Shortly after I first saw this thread, I discovered that Arby's is doing something like this too, though it's obviously coincidental - their ad for their current "5 for $5.95" deal has a guy standing next to a chalkboard, telling the audience to "do the math."

Is it?
Nov 1971: Nolan sells Computer Space to Nutting Associates.
Nov 1972: Atari builds their first assembly facilities.
Nov 1978: Nolan has himself fired from the role of CEO.
Nov 1979: Atari releases Asteroids.
Nov 1980: Atari releases Battlezone.
Nov 1981: Atari releases the GTIA in their new home computers.
Nov 1984: Atari announces their plans to release cheap 8 bit computers along with 16 and 32 bit systems to compete with Mac & IBM(PC).
Nov 1987: Atari releases the XE.
Nov 1989: Atari sells Federated Electronics.

Mere coincidence? Ha! Do the math!

You are assuming consumers had expectations of it.

In all fairness ... they're having their way with the Jaguar's AD CAMPAIGN'S corpse...

...and in double fairness "Do The Math" didn't originate with the Jaguar.

Now ... if you'd like to see a company that IS having it's way with the Jaguar's corpse ...

... check these out!
