just letting everybody know that Atlus is reprinting Persona 2 for thier "final" time and is available in extremely limited quantities over at amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004WLZ7?ie=UTF8&tag=atlus-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00004WLZ7
I got an e-mail from the Atlus newsletter saying its very limited and all that so whoever doesn't have it can buy it for $40 brand new over there. I already own it so I figured I'd let everybody here in on it if you don't have a copy of the game yet.

Nice, thanks for the info. I've already got one (bought it from Kitsune in fact), but that's still cool.
I'm glad I sold my extra for $75 a couple months ago!

If they're still selling it after all these years, why don't they just make a "Persona 2 Collection" for the PS3?
(You probably already know that the unofficial Innocent Sin translation was finished a little while ago.)

A game I'd been meaning to pick up for awhile. Thanks.

Was it on amazon for $40? Cause its not there anymore, most have been super limited. Glad i already own this, or i would be kicking myself.

Heh, I think the GQD reprint a couple years ago was also supposed to be in "extremely limited quantities" too. Or do they actually mean it this time?
Why doesn't Atlus reprint Persona Revelations too while they're at it? Complete used copies are selling for over $100...seems like they might sell more of those. Or is it a terrible game?

It's still there, not sure what kind of search you did, but clicking on the link in the Atlus e-mail brings it right up on Amazon.

I think that ATLUS is not very fond of PERSONA .... anyone that has played the game should agree that the localization was poorly made.
About the price ... i think that the game should be more like 30 usd, but the high prices on eBay are an incentive to buy it sealed for 40.
In fact i had just placed my order on amazon :P

It shows up for me, but then when I try to buy it, it says it is no longer available. very weird.

Why would i search for it, when the OP provided a link? I don't have access to this Atlus e-mail. :frustrated:
Saved some pictures, so i can upload them later on, after i run some errands, so everybody doesn't think im crazy.:-D:wink 2:

They probably ran out already. Someone at CheapAssGamer said that they only had 500 copies or so (who knows if that was true).

Dammit. I missed it. I want it but I'm not paying the ridiculous Ebay prices.
This is an acknowledgment, however, that they are aware there is a demand for these. It'd be nice if they released at least this one and the first Persona on a PS2 or PS3 disc. It would be better if they would retranslate and fix the first one and include both parts of part two, of course, but if I get genie wishes I'm sure I'll think of far better things to do with them.

Keep checking back. I checked about three hours ago and it wasn't available, but then an hour later it reappeared for pre-order for me.

Wow, I'm amazed it climbed back up in price after the first reprint. I had figured it was still cheap and that it would never get much higher than 20 bucks after eBay and GameStops were flooded with 'em. I guess it's a result of the massive popularity of Persona 3 and Persona 4 on the horizon. Rhapsody has stayed pretty low, but now that there's a DS version gamers have other options.

I honestly hate Atlus for stuff like this. The way Atlus does their cheap sales tactics are worse than Nintendo.
Truthfully, if they kept it at 49.99 or 39.99 for years and sold the same amount of copies that keep reprinting, the collectors prices won't drop so drastically.
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment is now on its second(or third) reprint. SMT Nocturne has been reprinted two or three times. Disgaea has been reprinted three or four times(not exactly sure of the second amount on the games but am sure of all the first amounts.) All of these reprints have made the collectors value nothing because everyone sees them every few years.
Another thing is Atlus puts these jacked up prices(aside from the last reprint of Disgaea.) If Nocturne and Disgaea were on the shelves and sold as much as the amount of reprints, you'll already see them in greatest hits status so everyone should be able to see them for 19.99, the collectors still being able to have games that are worth 80 dollars for having the originals. But the way Atlus does it they screw over both collectors and fans of gaming that want a way to get games at a decent price, so they wait until price drops.
Atlus is a company, yes, and all companies do want to make money, but it's stupid with all these cheap bullshit sales tactics. It's even worse than Nintendo with their policy of almost never dropping the price to their first party games.
The last thing I have to say is that they wouldn't have to do these cheap sales tactics if 90% of their localized games didn't suck. Look back during their PSX, NES, SNES, releases. Most of the releases didn't suck and the only one I can truthfully think of is Hoshigami Ruining Blue Earth that actually did suck. For the PS2, PSP, and DS, I can make a long list just from games I can think of off the top of my head of games that suck badly. If they'd atleast try to release some decent games that people might actually want they might not have to pull these bullshit sales tactics and we'd gladly pay 39.99 for a good game(such as Persona 4 which is going to be released as an example.)
Not sure how many people have been long time fans of Atlus, but don't you guys agree there's been a major decline in quality released?

I think it's more a matter of Atlus just being conservative. They're not a huge publisher and they've released some games that weren't even close to being as successful as they hoped (like the PSP port of Riviera), so they can't afford to overprint. It's not a good thing for them if stores have more copies than they can sell at the MSRP and are then forced to mark them down. In the case of some titles, they know there is enough interest to warrant a second print run, so that's why they bother. I see the reprints as a favor to fans because the only other scenario I imagine they'd do would be to never offer more copies, leaving the games at insane prices on the used market.
Of course, as a collector, I completely understand the frustration. I prefer to buy my games used or marked down, but if the game disappears from store shelves in no time and the used copies are even more than the original MSRP, it's annoying. But, hey, better that the games be tough to get than not available in the U.S. at all.
In terms of quality, it's usually the lesser appreciated games that do get marked down. Stuff like Metal Saga, Steambot Chronicles, and Baroque all got cheap.

I don't think Atlus really cares about the used-game collector's market at all or the impact their rereleases have on it. Why would they? If that guy on Amazon manages to sell his copy of Persona 2 for $175, they get nothing out of it.
They know their audience tends toward Japanophiles who just want to play these games and don't care if they are reprints or not. Those people will look at the reprints as a favor from Atlus, because they get a chance to play the games without paying, say $69.99 for disc only, which is the cheapest price for Persona 2 right now on Amazon.
I do wish they'd do a better job of keeping stuff there is clearly demand for on the shelves, though. They did do a Disgaea Greatest Hits, so that's an improvement, but I think games have to have a certain amount of sales to go Greatest Hits and I bet a lot of Atlus titles wouldn't qualify. Maybe a budget "Atlus Classics" line would work?

I didn't actually buy a copy but it seriously amazes me that there are still new print runs of PS1 games. What other system do they do that kind of thing for? you don't see Sega making reprints of Panzer Dragoon Saga or anything. Either wa I figured I'd spread the word because I'm sure plenty of people wanted sealed copies for $40. It may drop the value for a little while, but I have a feeling that eventually it'll go back up again just due to the release of P4 and the possibility of it gaining more of a Persona fan base.

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have a ton of these games in storage somewhere.

They may not give a hoot what people pay for used games, but I'm sure they think "Instead of that guy getting $175, we could be getting money into our own pockets." I don't think it's a coincidence that every Atlus reprint has been expensive on the used market. They take it as a sign of demand and thusly potential profits. I don't think Rhapsody would've had a shot in hell of getting a reprint if not for the crazy prices it was strangely pulling.

Exactly right. Why should Atlus let other people reap ridiculous profits off their games when they are the ones entitled to those profits? I personally don't have a problem with this practice, even though I buy just about every new Atlus release for full price and have since the SNES days. Ultimately, I am a collector, but not one who thinks much about value or even rarity necessarily. I'm glad more people have a chance to add this to their collection and it really has no impact on the fact that I already own this game and am glad I do.

Yeah, that's what I meant. They only care about the money they can make themselves and if offering a reprint of a game they have clear evidence there is high demand for means some guy on Ebay can't get $175 for it anymore, they aren't losing sleep over it.
Anyway, I've checked several times today and it didn't come back up.

It's kind of sad when some collectors expect otherwise from them. It's amazing the amount of whining that goes on on their forums every time a reprint lowers the value of a game on the used market, as if they expect Atlus games to put their kids through college.

I totally agree .... too many "collectors" bitch about reprints, those people ABUSE of the gamers that hadn't the luck of getting the game when it came out.
ATLUS makes a really big investment in the localization or getting the license to publish a game in the U.S., they have the right to reprint its games and invest that money to bring us more quality games ...

thats why when I see an Atlus game that I think I'll be interested in, I buy it shortly after it comes out, if not day 1. I started doing this when I first got into Atlus and realized they make short print runs and don't always make reprints.
