Ok we know that there are some titles that just are rare but not necessarily that great. In my book something like the texas chainsaw massacre for the atari is a rare and expensive game , however I dont find it to be a great game to play. The games that are rare and expensive doesn't always equate to a quality game. Leave it up to the collectors to partake in those kind of games for its collectibility.
However most people want to buy a game because its a good game. Most of us consider ourselves gamers and don't like paying big price tags for great games. Most of us rather not pay the cash but we do it cause we enjoy hidden gems and highly acclaimed titles that didn't receive high production numbers.Which games do you find the most worthy of paying premium a for? What games are fun enough and worth the extra cash?

Some people may argue that this game is "not all that", but I *really* love Magical Chase. I spent $330 on the hucard, and I just do not regret it at all. I could have purchased the Japanese version for over $100 less, but it is a little different (not like that matters) and it does not help me complete a USA TG16 set (that DOES matter to me).
So, purchased to complete the set, but equally purchased because it is just a damn good game.

I am in agreement that Magical Chase is a very good game. See avatar :D
I was lucky I guess as I had got the game cheap many years ago.
I spent $200 on a boxed Recca a couple years back and I find it to be worth every thing I spend for it.
I can say similar things for Eliminate Down as I pay $160 and enjoy it much. But Recca was worth every thing I pay and is one of my all time favorites.

Rodland for NES is a blast. It reminds me of a cross between Bubble Bobble and Mr. Do's Castle. The Pal version goes for around $200, but the famicom version is almost completely in english. I wish I could say I owned the PAL version, but I am happy with just playing the game. I took the famciom game and stuck it in an extra Gyromite cart and printed up a nice label. It looks great and it saved me about $175. Mr. Gimmick is another high dollar PAL NES game that gets really good praise. I actually have this game (real version)but have yet to really play it.

I never really cared for most of the Euro NES rarities, they can be found far cheaper on the Famicom (RodLand, Mr. Gimmick), or are retitled games that are common enough in the US. Another one is Elite, but that one was released on the computers here too.
I bought some Famicom games that I paid quite a bit for, like Recca as TurboGenesis did, and a gold Punch Out cart.

Brigandine Legend of Forsena, Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together, and Suikoden 2 are all rare US releases for the Playstation. All three are great games.
Usually though, most rare games that suck still aren't expensive games. If it's expensive and most people want it, it's usually a decent game that's highly overrated. Nothing that usually sucks though(usually.)
One of the only games I've noticed that has quite a high price tag and it's a horrible game. Valkyrie Profile. However this won't really fit the rare games because it's crap, solely because everyone loves this game. The game is praised left and right and it honestly doesn't deserve the praise. Valkyrie Profile is nothing more than a boring repetitive button masher(and yes, I know you time your hits, but after you got it down, you repeatedly do the same string of timed hits for awhile.) Awful game.

I don't agree with Valkyrie Profile being a horrible game, just overpriced, not *that* rare, and overrated, much like Final Fantasy 7. It's not that hard to find if you're willing to dig around for it in stores, I've had 5 or so copies of that game before.

Well Im here to talk about good games people pay a high premium for, I would argue that the topic you bring up is not the same. Maybe I would agree to that post if a explanation was given , rather than simply having a link posted. But since there isn't an explanation or real connection given in your post , please don't bring up something irrelevant to the topic. Thank you and good luck in the future.

Swing and a miss.
Edit: On topic, I would pay the going eBay rate for Radiant Silvergun.

The end of the Saturn had some great games that are expensive now (Not top end expensive but still up there)
Panzer Dragoon Orta, Burning Rangers, Shining Fore 3 and the House of the Dead are 4 of the best games on the Saturn, and four of the highest priced.

Chotetsu Brikinger for the Neo CD is a great game -- damn near impossible to find as it's a Neo CD exclusive.

Keo Flying Squadron and Snatcher for the Sega CD. Both can fetch some money and both are worth it. I got a good deal on my Keo Flying Squadron, and it was over $100. It is by far one of the best shooters on Sega CD

I had got Keio long ago at bargin price. and then a couple years ago, I went to go play and when I removed the disc from the case… SNAP! the disc broke clean in half
:( :( :(
I spent about 2 month on ebay and had to pay I think it was $130 for another one. I knew well going in that the game had raise in price but I enjoyed the game and to have my copy break I was willing to pay high price for replacement.

I was going to bring up Snatcher, although I've never had a chance to play it to see how good it really is. I do have Keio Flying Squadron, and it is really pretty dang great. Here's something that'll burn ya... I bought mine at Best Buy when they were phasing out Sega CD games, they'd knocked it down to $12.50. :)
I personally don't get into fighting games, but Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is one that isn't rare, but people are still willing to pay the proverbial buttload for a copy. And Battlesphere is a good game if you're into 3D space shooters (like I am), and it goes for a ton of money on eBay. A lot of people actually buy the game as an investment rather than a video game made to be played. I've only played it at conventions, and I really loved it, but there's no way I can justify paying $500 for a copy. I'd love to own one, though.

This, as well, is not that rare, but may run you a few bucks: Lucienne's Quest (3DO). Great game and RPG experience (IMHO).

I bought SVC: Card Fighters' Clash 2 Expand Edition for the Neo Geo Pocket and never regretted it. I loved the first greatly. It was $125 new 4 weeks after the release date. It was "rare" the minute it hit the shelves, which pissed me off so badly, but I had to have it. I wanted it for retail price, but it completely sold out on one day I was told.
I know people won't call this rare, but Akumajo Dracula X Chi no Rondo (Castlevania) for the PC Engine is great as well. I finally broke down and bought it about two months before the PSP port was announced. *doh* I don't dare look to see how much they dropped in price.

I might be the only one around here to agree with you on this one. I bought it around a year ago, played it for a few hours, and thought it sucked tremendously. Getting past that LOOOOOOOONG intro sucked enough to quit it. But still, I gave it a chance and will never go back to it. Needless to say, it went back on eBay a few days after that. I was pleased with the price. I bought it for $82 shipped. Sold it for a Buy It Now for $125 :D

Valkyrie Profile is a great game, if you actually know how to play it.

They have already been mentioned, but I feel that Radiant Silvergun (transcendence imho), and especially Panzer Dragoon Saga (I am not a huge RPG guy, but LOVE PDS - though you do need to live with the aged graphics at this point), are well worth the money. Thankfully I got PDS at its release, but I did pay for RSG.
Golden Axe Warrior for the SMS is worth the price of admission if you like the original Legend of Zelda, though the 2 Neutopia games on the TurboGrafx are better (and cheaper).
Twinkle Star Sprites is worth the money on any system, though I personally like the Saturn version best.
ZanacXZanac on the Jp PSOne is also incredible. It has the Famicom, FDS & MSX Special versions of the original Zanac, plus a truly awesome, fully 2D remake/sequel. It very well may be my favorite shmup on the system.
If you are a fan of Super Seizure Robots(!) type anime, 70's Robot Anime Geppy-X for the Jp PSX is totally worth it for the top-notch production of it all (a 4 Disc shoot 'em up!?! - most of the space is cutscenes of course); even if the underlying game is average at best. It at least plays better than Philosoma (which has a similar cinematic presentation, though of a completely different style). Oh, and the theme music is a gas.
Before it was available on the Wii VC, Sin & Punishment for N64 was also worth the cash. It still is for me, as I actually prefer the N64 controller for this game. Bangai-O is cool on the N64 too, though it is debatable whether it is worth it or not when the DC and DS games are so good. I imagine that one may even hit the VC at some point.
There is an entire list of NEC PCE games that are worth every cent. I have rarely been disappointed by an over-hyped CD game on the system.
Atari Jaguar Pro Controllers are definitely worth the money.
The Vectrex with a multicart is friggin' excellent.
As far as some that aren't:
Rakugaki Showtime really isn't that great of a game (though it can be fun with 4 players). Really, don't waste the money unless you are a Treasure collector.
Steam Hearts is a crapfest on any system.
The PCE ACD version of Strider has a great soundtrack and an extra stage, but is nowhere near as close to the arcade, or as intensely playable, as the Genesis version.
Panzer Dragoon Mini is an expensive curiousity for completists, nothing more.
The in-betweeners:
GG Aleste and GG Aleste 2 are awesome games, but the vaseline-o-vision of the Game Gear makes them not quite worth what they go for. They are also emulated quite well. Actually, all of the expensive import GG games aren't really worth it; even the technically impressive, and very playable port of Gunstar Heroes.
The Atari Jaguar is an addictive system to collect for (there is just something about it), and there are some truly excellent games for the system, but the majority of said games (save the killer app Tempest 2000 thankfully), are too expensive for their own good.

Saturn House of the Dead can't get enough love. It got dumped on when it came out for the load times and the downgraded graphics, but I still found it to be perfectly playable and just as addictive as the arcade version. Hell, you could even change the color of blood if you wanted to get that "original" experience (or hell, just make it purple for shits n grins).
I really, really wish that Sega would put the game out for a more modern system. It's a damn shame they wouldn't put it on the Wii with the other two games :\

I've never spend over $100 on a game. Never have, never will.
UNLESS somehow magically another run of Battlesphere: Gold for the Jaguar happens and it's priced as it was several years back. About $160 with a bunch of extras. Battlesphere and BS:G sell on eBay for $300-$600 right now... :/ Used and new.

I paid $100 for Snatcher earlier this year and never regretted it, even after beating the game in under 12 hours. To me, it was just that damn good, despite the laughable voice 'acting' and the story that was 90% lifted from 'Blade Runner'.
I can't believe that some of you guys are crapping on Valkyrie Profile! I paid $25 for it back in the day when EB carried PS1 games and I fell in love with it immediately. The visuals (except for the shitty overworld view), the gameplay, the mythology and all of the little touches and extras make this game more than worth it's asking price.
Intelligent Qube, on the other hand, is not worth whatever it's selling for nowadays. I do understand the core mechanics of the game and I dig the classical soundtrack.... but something just doesn't 'click'. Good thing I bought this for dirt cheap years ago.

they're all worth it to me... of course it's frustrating when I have to pay triple digits for a crappy game, but you just can't put a price on completing a part of your collection... the feeling that gives me is worth any triple digit amount... I dunno how the guys who pay quadruple digits for some of those old Atari 2600 games do it though... if any triple digit game I wanted that I didn't have yet suddenly shot up to quadruple digits, it had better be of Radiant Silvergun caliber awesomeness, or I prolly wouldn't pay it... I'd pay quadruple digits for Psychic Assassin Toramaru factory sealed, if I had it to spend, and I had to, but that's the only game near quadruple digits in value in that condition that I've encountered so far, so that's the only way that I can relate... I just can't see paying $1000 or more for Atari 2600 CRAP... more power to the guys who can do it, but SHEESH, how do you justify it? I'd pay quadruple digits for Radiant Silvergun factory sealed, if I had to, but I'd be mad as hell about it, because it's not really rare, it's just in high demand... and it's overhyped as the greatest video game ever made... but would I pay $1000 for Custer's Revenge? FUCK NO... FUCKING stick figures??? even the FUCKING wouldn't make it worth it for me... FUCK THAT! LOL so I'm glad I don't have to worry about it... I just don't collect for any systems like that... like I said, more power to those who do, but I don't see how they do it... unless it's just like I said about my own collecting... you just can't put a price on the feeling that adding any new game to your collection gives you... no matter what the cost... that's what you're really buying when you do that...

I'll echo a few others and agree on Panzer Dragoon Saga. I was up late many a night playing this, thoroughly enjoyed it, one of my favorite RPGs.
The Neo Geo is an interesting system for worth. The MVS versions of all of the Metal Slug games are well worth the money. The AES versions are crazy expensive, still amazes me people shell out the money they do when there several ways to play the games for less money.
I personally don't think any video game is worth more than $300 or so based on game-play alone. Titles in that range are usually priced more based on true rarity, desirability and are much loved by those that just have to collect them all.
I've never spend over $100 on a game. Never have, never will.

Agreed. I paid $120 for a copy way back when, and to date is the only japanese game I used an english walkthrough (Rather than find a translated rom or something) to play through. Worth every penny and then some.
If you enjoyed CFC on the NGPC, find a way to get CFC2 - it makes everything better, ups the challenge and you don't need to necessarily trade to get a full cardset. And Mask is the man - period.
