brightness switch i was told its called a variable Resistor is this right please help

You can buy them in any electronic store, like Radio Shack.

Radio Shack might not carry the small ones that a game gear uses though it wouldn't hurt to check. If not, try looking on mouser.com or digikey.com. I'd imagine it would be a pretty standard part.
