but what game has been released on the most platforms (both classic and newer - and import and domestic)?
I would bet on Shanghai - close to 20 platforms (either as shanghai or on a compilation).

Tetris probably?

I think Pac-man has been on the most consoles, around 30 I believe.

Pac-Man, Burgertime, and pretty much every system had either Breakout or a clone of it.
Pong, 1000s of companies from Atari to Nintendo, made some sort of Pong console or two during the 70s

I was wondering this as well, pong sounds about right, but (I'm guessing) since all those versions were slightly different, do they count?
I'd love it to be Sonic the Hedgehog, the original has been on:
1. Genesis
2. Sega Saturn
3. Playstation 2
4. Xbox
5. Gamecube
6. Xbox 360
7. Wii
8. Playstation 3
9. PC (if you count that)
10. May have been on Dreamcast as part of Sega smash packs.

Or if you count Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

well, they don't count as they're different games, I was talking about the original Sonic the hedgehog.
It was also ported to Sega master system, Gameboy Advance and mobiles but (IMO) doesn't count due to differences between these ports and the original.

Space Harrier would be my estimate.

Swamperon, the original Sonic the Hedgehog got "ported" to the GBA as well.

Ys Books I & II have been remade more times than Michael Jackson and Madonna combined, but still not close to stuff like Pac Man and Tetris.

Definitely Pac-Man, Tetris in second place and probably Galaga in third.

Frogger has to be way up there as well. I think I always mention Frogger when this kind of thread comes up.

On second thought, the answer has to be Snake.

But most of these games (pac-man, tetris, pong, snake) are different. The basics, and general gameplay are the same, but they are in essence different games. I think the topic creator meant which single game has appeared on most consoles.

Counting compilations, unlockable hidden games, and Wii Virtual Console games is far too loose. And you left out the Master System version. :)
Ys Books I & II have been remade more times than Michael Jackson and Madonna combined, but still not close to stuff like Pac Man and Tetris.
Remade on which systems? I know they're working on a DS version. I think they also made it on the PS2, but what else? I'd love a Wiimake.

Pretty sure the last time this topic came up the answer was either Frogger or Q*Bert.

Tetris
I get what you're saying, but all those Tetris games are different. Different sounds, graphics etc and therefore technically different games.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared on all of those consoles as the exact same game. How is the use of compilations/VC "loose"? It's the same game, being re-released on a new console, merely in a different format.
I am aware of the Master System release, but not counting it as they're actually different games. Same for the GBA/Mobile releases.
Also, I doubt Sonic the Hedgehog is, it's just merely a good example of the exact same game being released on multiple consoles.

How about Mega Man?

Well, a graphing calculator isn't capable of producing the same graphics and sounds as the NES or an arcade cabinet, so many of the versions of Tetris are different out of necessity.
By the way, when I write Tetris, I don't mean The New Tetris, Tetris Worlds, or Tetris Party. I mean the plain old original Tetris.
I understand your point too, though. I guess the answer depends on the specifics of the original question.
