So I ordered a new Goldfinger form EMS as I got like three PSX's with the A/V ports on the back and only one mod chip. So I got one of these to play imports and backups. Well I was told I needed to flash these in order to get the backup capabilites. Well I found this site

And it has the FW's. Does anyone have any experience with these and can shed some light on the subject.

That is the model I have ordered that should be here soon. So any info before it gets here would be great.

It looks like my Game Enhancer 9 and for that you don't need anything beyond the device(that hooks up to the back of your PS1 like a first generation Gameshark) and the spring that you place in your console under the lid release. That way it tricks your PS1 into thinking the lid is closed when you open it to swap out a US disc for an import disc. When you get it check to see if it has the spring. If it does you should be fine. If you have any problems though let me know.

I have a spring from a console pull from a while back. Do backups work the same way?

Yup. Of course I only have one and I had no choice because they never made a retail version of Thrill Kill. But they get swapped and loaded the same way as imports do.

Yea I was just told they had to be flashed. Oh well, I have a GS in one unit already and I will attempt to "flash" the new bios on it once I get the ordered parts for that model in. You wouldn't believe how easy a PSX with a parallel ports are. I inquired about two with those ports one had the A/V jacks in the back and a GS and one didn't but the one that doesn't is mint, but they were given to me for shipping! I then just got a 1001 model and a GC w/ GBA player for $20 shipped!! It's like people are trying to give away GC's and PS1'a as of late LOL Thanks for the info and if I do a successful "flash" I will let you know if it is of any use. I know one of those enables you to be able to beat the copy protection on games like FF8, Spyro, and Resident Evil Survivor that weren't previously possible with this type of "mod" and older chips.

I have a fairly recent version of the Goldfinger adapter and you don't have to flash it to play backups, at least the ones without copy protection. I received a backup game in a group of games I got and it worked fine with the Goldfinger.
Of course, the backup game I had didn't have copy protection, so when you flash it, let us know how it works out.
All game enhancers, goldfingers, etc use a hacked version of the Caetla bios with an auto-stop spin function at the main screen. You won't have to flash anything because I've never heard of any seller selling these without some type of bios flashed onto it.
If for some reason you decided to flash the cart, you'd need a device that hooks to your PC (a PC comms port) that's kinda hard to come across these days.

No they still sell them brand new the coms cable and the Goldfinger both for under $10 shipped. I got one and flashed the anti-stealth mod as well to it after a little digging. Now even Spyro works fine!! Thanks for the head sup though.
