Which games library would cost the most money, excluding prototypes and special carts, like the Gold NES World Championships cart.
My guess would be, itīs either PC-Engine including CD-Rom games,
Neo Geo AES or Atari 2600 (us).
Does somebody know?

Well, i think that Neo Geo AES, Odyssey and...in USA...SMS TecToy carts.

It would have to be the 2600 or the Neo Geo. If I'm not mistaken, NO ONE has a complete collection of 2600 games.

Well... Virtual Boy has a small library, but it has some of the most expensive games... Virtual Bowling selling for around $1200, and SD Gundam usually selling for around $800. Then Virtual Lab and Space Invaders sell for around $300-$400, then a few more that sell for around $100.

Virtual Boy and brazilian SMS? No way.
Just to make that clear, I meant overall most expensive library. Not, most expensive in relation to the number of games avaiable.

@Red_Eye:
I guess, youīre right. Those mailorder and unlicensed carts for 2600 surely make this library the most expensive, but i think if we would just count the official, licensed games that were avaiable in shops, the PC Engine would definitly be still in the running. This system has a plethora of games in the 200-1000$ range.

I'm with TheRedEye on this one too. It's almost inconceivable to complete an Atari 2600 collection. Forget about the few Virtual Boy games that go in the hundreds - there are FAR MORE in that range on the 2600, and some games will go into the thousands. This has already been proven, if you'll recall, offers have been put on the table several times for games like Eli's Ladder, Air Raid, Gauntlet, Video Life and Magicard for $1000 cash flat out, and much more has been paid for these games in the past.

Neo-Geo is close but I'm sure that if you added up the totals for the last time every game in each library was purchased, the 2600 would have the highest cumulative total.

I'd probably have to agree with the 2600. Although the Saturn, especially if you want a complete Japanese set, will pose some difficulty, and some serious cash.

At the moment there are a ton of Saturn titles at $100+, and most of them are only 6-7 years old. Wait until they are 20+ years old and see how expensive and difficult it gets.

I find it hard to believe that there are no complete 2600 collections out there...

I'd have to agree with some of your guys and say that the Neo Geo probably is the most expensive, but for some reason the first thing that popped into my head when I read the question was the Bandai Pippin @World. That would cost quite the pretty penny, wouldn't it?

LeonK,

It shouldn't be surprising. There are thousands and thousands of atari 2600 carts, and more are constantly being discovered. To be honest, I'm pretty positive that the 2600 list even in the DP guide is VERY far from complete...there is just way too damn many of them. Every now and then, even I send Joe a few items to add to the list and I own less that 500 2600 carts.

I would go neo geo all the way, for consistency. Most of the titles are over $50 in price, and some 50% or over $100.

It becomes a statistical quest. How do you determine most expensive? Most expensive to complete at market prices? Most expensive average price? Most expensive to get a nice collection for?

I'd say 2600 is one of the cheapest to get a nice collection for, but one of the most expensive to complete.

I think it really depends on the region you are talking about. I am solely a US game collector (I have a few imports but it's of games I really like). With that in mind you can remove a few of the Euro games from the Neo list and make it a little more obtainable. Atari 2600 on the other hand is surely one of the most difficult and costly. Granted even if you go with a US only collection of Neo Geo games you have a few that hit the $1K+ mark. However which of the two can you find at a garage sale? There is a much better chance of finding a rare Atari 2600 cart at a garage sale or flea market then it is to find a cheap Neo Geo game anywhere.

Bottom line I think (and from a US market only perspective) I would say 2600 is the most difficult to complete (and most expensive at current market value) but you have better opportunities to find rare games for cheap. Neo Geo, your kinda stuck paying somewhere close to market value on any game you buy.

Yeah, me too. Are we talking US released games or imports too? Not counting protoypes or homebrews.

I would think it'd be impossible to get a complete boxed 2600 collection, but surely someone is pretty damn close to having all the carts.
