Over the past five years, while I've been collecting at least somewhat seriously, all sorts of games have passed through my place. I've gone through a few phases - like NES collecting. At one point, I had over 300 NES carts, then just got sick of most of them and cleared 'em out in trades/sales/whatever. Now I've got maybe 90 of those 300. I was collecting Colecovision for a while, had about 40 carts, and now have exactly 1 (Rocky, if you care.) Anyway, the point is that my numbers are always fluctuating and I've had a lot of games come and go...

Well, today marked the purchase of my 1000th unique game that's for my collection and not for the trade pile. Technically, it's not my 1000th game - that was a long while ago - but it's the first time that my actual collection has contained 1000 games at once. So it's kind of nifty. For the record, it was Suepr Ghouls N Ghosts for the SNES. The thing that I'm most pleased about is that it's not made up of a ton of modern games. Between the Saturn, Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast, there are about 80-85 titles. The 2600 alone makes up 358 of the 1000 ;)

That's all, just wanted to share. Yay me.

Hmm, I tried to post twice, but couldn't think of something fitting.

For sure, you could've gotten a much worse game for your 1000th. (I've got to put this story up somewhere on that classicgaming.com/gng/ site...) How long have you been collecting? I admit to have only been in this business myself (buy only so far) since early 2002.

Cool story, I wish I remembered what my 1000th game was. I went through such an incredibly buying spree in 2000-2 (moving into a larger house will do that to you) that I flat out don't remember.

If I had to guess, it was probably for the Odyssey2 or Sega Master System, as I started collecting for both of those at about the same time, and they were right around my 19th and 20th systems...which would be about where I hit the 1000 game mark.

Congrats on joining the club :)

Hehe.

On the other hand, it COULD be said that Ninja here wasn't putting off the bad stuff... :P

I need to get started and type up all my games so I know just how many I have. I have a notebook with games listed somewhere but it's been some time since I updated it. I'm guessing that my collection is probably somewhere in the 700s. Lately I've been concentrating on Dreamcast and Playstation (PSOne) with the odd GameCube purchase. I actually just won an auction which will be my first Jaguar purchases in probably a year or two. I'm getting two games in the auction, Cannon Fodder and that skiing game. At one time, I thought I'd stop my Playstation purchases at an even 100...now I think I'm close to 140 so I may as well go to 200 on that system... :D

And what on earth could you mean by that? ;P

As far as how long I've been collecting, as asked above, it's been about five years. The fall of '98 maybe. It's been a slower trip to 1000 than for others because I a) end up selling or trading off lots of games and b) don't dedicate too much cash to collecting. Gotta pay for that overpriced education thing, you know! So, reality slows me down to stuff that I really want to play or collect that also happens to be cheap. Eventually, being thrifty will pay off and I'll be able to splurge more often, which ought to increase the collection exponentially.

Consider this topical example: the Super GN'G that made 1000 was the most complete, minty SNES game I've ever seen out of shrinkwrap. And it's a great game. And it was only $4. Four bucks. I insisted on talking the seller down to $2 anyway ;)

5 years? I've been at it about 2 and I'm not even at 50, but close. I average $40-$50 a game with my current record at $233...but I've only bought a couple loose carts for the moment. Still, that's the way to go for collecting. Get at least some copy of the game instead of none.

Well that explains it right there, doesn't it? ;)

Not including the Arcadia Multicart, my record for buying games is a tie at $40. Sonic Adventure 2 on its release day so that I could get the 10th Anniversary Pack with it and Custer's Revenge because I sold $42 worth of NES carts at a trade meet, so I considered it as a trade with a cash middle-man. Besides that, I spent $20 on Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and everything else has just gone down from there.

We have an unwritten motto at NECG, well at least Christian and I do: New England gamers are the cheapest in the land. Half of the fun in this hobby/addiction is in the hunt. And 75% of the hunt's fun is in getting a deal. Since I tend to wait until I can find the deal, I've gone through several phases of not buying any games at all for weeks. That's how it works with me, and I'm satisfied with it. For example, I'd be glad to have a Neo Geo home system, but until it turns up for 20 bucks at a yard sale, I'm probably not going to front the big cash for one. After all, one of the reasons I got into classic gaming was because it was a cheap alternative to modern gaming.

And, um, what was I talking about again?
