Whatever kind of "project" this is, it can't possibly be complete with the original Alone in the Dark trilogy (PC).

Trapt (PS2)
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (DC)
Carrier (DC)

Wow you got a lot of work to do. Then again, what collector doesn't... I'm an xbox buff so I thumbed through my collection to list a few that I think you may want to add. Ummm... I noticed you listed the same game, but different platforms like Obscure. So I'm keeping up with that.

Xbox

Hunter: The Reckoning
Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer (GC and PS2)
House of the Dead III
Area 51
Fatal Frame
Curse: The Eye of Isis
Evil Dead: Regeneration
Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick
Pinkiller: Hell Wars
Run Like Hell
Manhunt
Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green
Barbie Wild Horse Adventures (Well, it's not quite survival...)

Playstation

Final Doom

Dreamcast

Zombie Revenge
Illbleed
D2 (I think)

PS2

McFarlane's Evil Prophecy

You need to expand several titals like Alone in the Dark, Evil Dead, Splatterhouse, and Galerians. I do have to admit I like your list. I didn't think anyone else knew about Kuon. But I don't think I would have listed Juggernaut. It's not servival, not realy horror ether, just plain wierd...

If you're serious about it you have to include PC games too which means at least Alone in the Dark 1-3 and Ecstatica 1+2

Does Carrier for Dreamcast count?
Oh, and Galearians: Ash for ps2 deserves a spot :)

For now I am only making lists for console games. I will branch off into PC eventually, but I think with that there would be too much to handle. As for handhelds, I don't think any of them can reach the status of horror.

I am also concerned about the line I need to make between Survival Horror and action/adventure. It will be difficult because they are so similar. Just tell me if you see a game that you think shouldn't fit and I will make a final decision at some point.

Also, I am only doing North American releases for now. I also think it would get out of hand if I had to keep track of which were PAL and weren't, and everything. So that will come later.

Thanks for all your help so far, the list has really grown.

You forgot Sweet Home for the NES, the Great Grandfather of survival horror.

Should add House of the Dead 2&3 on the Wii.

Nightmare Creatures II was also released on the Dreamcast.

A gauntlet clone? They may be horror based but they're not survival games.

Constantine (ps2)
Darkwatch (ps2)
Lifeline (ps2)
Run Like Hell (ps2)
Van Helsing (ps2) I think it should count, right?

I also agree with Daria on the Hunter games.

I think the first Survival/Horror game I played was Resident Evil. I was so impressed with the game that I decded I wanted to make a collection of games of that genre. Now we are flooded with Horror games, but when I started out there were so few - I can remember trying to decide if The Adventures of Dr. Franken was sufficiently horrible enough to be part of a Horror collection! Well after all, he IS Frankenstein's monster, isn't he? LOL

What I remember best about Resident Evil was being trapped in a zombie infested hallway with 2 bullets and a knife. If I shot my way thru, God only knows when I would find more ammo. Knifing my way past them was going to be slow and probably no less fatal prone than just trying to run by them!
I guess that's what made Resident Evil a SURVIVAL/Horror game. Trying to differentiate a Survival/Horror game from an Action/Adventure/Shooter/Role Playing Horror game can come down to a matter of tastes or perceptions. Unless of course, you are simply willing to let others make the judgement call for you.

Moby games lists these under Survival/Horror
Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
Onimusha 3: Demon Siege
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
Onimusha: Warlords
Raw Danger

These they simply listed under horror.....
Agatha Christie: And then there were None

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Typing of the Dead
Vampire Night
Warlock
Werewolf: The Last Warrior
Wings of Wor
Zombie Nation

Yeesh! That ought to keep you busy for awhile sorting them out.
I think they left out Agatha Christie: Evil Under the Sun and I'm suprised they didn't include Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton's The: Oogie's Revenge.

By the way, It Came From the Desert was never actually released on the Genesis other than in ROM form according to Wikipedia. It also noted that the game was inspired by the 1954 B-movie mutant-ant classic Them! My own personal mutant-ant favorite has been released over here on the Xbox360 as Earth Defense Force.

And isn't Sweet Home a Japanese famicom game?

I definitly need to make a criteria. I will attempt to play more of the games I have on the list and buy or atleast watch gameplay videos of others.

I am going to be more strict about the Horror aspect then the survival. So basicly FEAR in, Grabbed by the Ghoulies out.

If you're going to include Area 51 for the XBox, you might as well include BlackSite: Area 51 for the 360/PS3.

There you go. :) You need orientation guidelines for survival horror games when it comes to gameplay. (not an all-agreed definition, even with a definition you end up with borderline cases) A good orientation would be the gameplay of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark.

An eerie horror setting isn't enough, and the proposals of Castlevania, Onimusha or Devil May Cry are just plain nonsense, not to mention Baroque. :) This way you'd end up with 30% of all games ever released, and the lists would be meaningless.

Keep the ideas coming. I will create a master list whenever this thread dies and pick out the ones that don't fit my criteria.

May not count for you in this case because it's C64, but Project Firestart always comes to mind for me.

Deep Fear (Saturn)
Soul of the Samurai (PSX)

Those are the only ones that popped into my head that don't seem to have been mentioned.

Regarding the N64, if Nightmare Creatures counts, then what about Shadow Man and Castlevania? In all three games, the player runs around killing or avoiding monsters and collectng items.

Hey Rob2600-
Nice xmas ornament, where did u get it?

Also to the OP-
If you are serious about this project, you might want to do this by system. Do one system at a time and get everyone's thoughts. You can check out youtube or play the games that are on the edge. Then move to the next system and so on...

This is just too big to do all at once, imo. Cheers!

Should Disaster Report and Raw Danger be listed? They're survival games no doubt, though the horror aspect of it isn't something we traditionally think of as horror.

But trying to survive a natural disaster certainly fits portions of the definition of horror, which can be desribed as "an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting".

Left 4 Dead 2

Wii:

Cursed Mountain
Silent Hill:Shattered Memories
Dead Space: Extraction

The Atari 2600 had a game called Frankenstein's Monsters. I'm not really sure if that counts, but you had Haunted House so I decided to throw it out there.
The Dreamcast and PS2 both have Typing of the Dead, and Pinball of the Dead was released for the Gameboy Advance.
The Wii has House of the Dead: Overkill.
EDIT: Denis Leary reminded me of something: the ports of Doom and all of its various incarnations. Quite a few.
EDIT EDIT: While browsing the forum, came across Touch the Dead. If RPGs count, the Persona and Shadow Hearts series...serieses? Series'? Just the way it is?
Castlevania series.

Adding Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller for the 3DO to this list is really a stretch. It's a point and click adventure, and it doesn't really have a horror theme, even.
