I'm sure this would be a better fit in 'Import-mania' but... It could go either way, and it might get more responses inside 'classic gaming'...

I was looking to get some SFC titles that are english-friendly. Does anyone have a favorite and/or can anyone recommend one to me?
my dream find would be some sort of strategy or maybe a turn-based action/rpg that was english friendly- unreasonable goal, i know but that would be awesome. anyone know of some goodies for the SFC that a US kid could pick up and get really into?

Also, Gundam games or SD Gundam games for both the famicom and sfc have piqued my interest- look awesome and fun but from what i can tell look like language intensive rpg/simulator/strategy type games. does anyone know of a worthwhile gundam game that an english-speaker could handle?

Click on the link in my sig below. My site has an "Obscure Super Famicom" section that highlights games us non Japanese reading folks can enjoy :)

Sorry, I don't have a whole lot of experience in the SD Gundam field.

There are a handful of sports / racing / fighting type games with SD Kamen Riders and Gundams, but I can't recall the name offhand. Some even have Godzilla and Ultra monsters.

Yes. If you count this, then I have played some of the SFC "Gundam" games. I recommend:

-Battle Racers
-Super Tekkyu Fight!

One is a Mario Kart clone and the other is a unique Bomberman clone but at the same time not really.

For a MK clone, not bad at all. Best of all, pretty common and cheap last I checked

1P mode and 4-player mode a la Bomberman. Quite an interesting game, but scarce

I also own the two "Battle Soccer" Super Famicom games but have yet to play either. As Cryo alluded to, these were the games with Godzilla and Ultra monsters in 'em.

You should try Front Mission. Really unique Strategy game. You won't understand the story but all the menus are in english.

EDIT: It's sequel, Front Mission: Gun Hazard is good too. Plays almost identical to the Cybernator/Metal Warriors series.

You should play the Great Battle games.

-Great Battle. Plays like Valkyrie no Densetsu. In my opinion it's the worst of them.

-Great Battle 2. Plays like Golden Axe.

-Great Battle 3. Plays like Golden Axe.

-Great Battle 4. My favorite in the series. Plays like a mix of Contra/Mega Man X.

-Great Battle 5. My second favorite in the series and actually has two different types of gameplay. Half of the levels play exactly like Cabal/Wild Guns, while the other half play like Contra/Mega Man X. It's also a nice touch that all the characters are styled as wild west like.

-Great Battle Soccer. What's there to say?

-Great Battle Dodgeball. Like Super Dodgeball.

Definitely an amazing series. If you ask me, it was a good way for Banpresto to cater to Japanese fans by making some good games with different styles of gameplay and all these fans would buy the games since they're never disappointing and they have their favorite characters.

Gun Hazard borrows so much from Cybernator/Assault Suit Valken and Metal Warriors and you could call the game a complete ripoff. The good thing is that Gun Hazard is an amazing game and who cares that it's a ripoff. Storyline is good too. There's an English patch.

The vast majority of Gundam games are terrible. At best, you'll get something passably mediocre, like the later Great Battle games. One of the exceptions is Gundam Wing: Endless Duel, which isn't bad for a lightweight fighter.

There's really no reason to bother with the Super Famicom version of Front Mission now that the game's out in English for the DS (and with extra content).
