Help understanding Sega Genesis A/V Out

Hi all,

I just pulled my old Sega Genesis out of the closet and am trying to hook it up to my TV. It has one of those old RF box things for the coax but I can't get a secure connection with it and the picture sucks. I'd like to switch over to component cables but am not sure what to get. I believe I have a Genesis 1 (has the headphone jack and volume slider on it.)

On Ebay I see cables for sale such as this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=220321877847&Category=139969&_trksid=p3907.m29&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D2) that claim to be for the Genesis 1 but from the picture it appears to be a 5 pin DIN connector (if I have the terminology correct). When I look at the back of my Genesis, it appears to have a port for an 8 pin DIN. What gives? I'd love to visit memory lane and play my favorite games - I love Cool Spot.

Can anyone explain or reassure me before buying something that won't work?

The native Genesis model 1 AV port pins (female 8 pin din) includes: Ground, 5Vcc(5V power),Composite video, Mono Audio,Red, Green, Blue and C Sync.....Any/All of these signals are used and needed for different purposes....

That 5 pin din cable, connects to the composite video( yellow RCA plug), Mono Audio(white RCA plug) pins and the respective outer ground....

So will the 5 pin din cable work? Do I need the red, green, blue and c sync? Or is composite video and mono sound enough? Can you recommend a better cable? Thanks for your help. Just trying to figure out the best way to hook this thing up.

The 5 DIN cable you saw must be a home made cable, like this one:
