View Full Version : Do you hold in Reset when powering off NES?

After seeing another thread about battery life/replacement, I wondered: How many of you actually hold Reset when turning off your NES with battery-save games? I never do and never lose data. I can remember holding in Reset in my youth and losing everything. Does anyone know why we're supposed to? Should I change my habits?

I never did, and I never got an erased game on any NES game.

Might be lucky tho.

I generally remember too. Haven't lost any data whether I do or don't so far, though.

I think it's something about hitting the power button can cause an abrupt change in the charge being sent to the cartridge and thusly the battery which can screw with the battery's content, but holding down the reset button negates this. I probably have half my details wrong, but it's roughly something like that.

I never do. The only game I remember saying it is Final Fantasy. Other games that have save data like Zelda, Zelda 2, Star Tropics, Star Tropics 2, and Dragon Warrior don't say hold reset. I do know Star Tropics says "Now saving, do not turn off power or reset."

Doesn't zelda tell you to hold the reset button when you die?

I have various Nintendo mag's lying around the house (Nintendo Power mostly) and there was an article/note in a couple of those that said to hold in the reset button while turning the power off to keep from losing saved data. I thought they also had a warning on the backside of the carts (but to be honest, I hardly ever look at the backside of games).

I use to do that with Zelda.

Zelda definitely tells you to. I always do, personally and have not lost data.

I never have and have never lost any saved games.... If you do a battery replacement does that mean it should be good for another 10-25 years? The lifespan is really impressive.

I did that back in the day. Some dude tried to tell me that it helps to charge the battery
One time I booted up zelda and for some reason I had everything and had not even played past the 2nd boss.

I dunno. I've never died in a video game.

Kidding. I'm not that good. I don't remember if it says that on Zelda though.

I never held reset, but I *did* loose data on Zelda one time. It was about three or so days after I bought it new back then when this happened. I didn't do anything crazy with the cart, but I also didn;t do the reset thing. Again, it only happened once, but I guess there was something to that whole reset thing...

I do with the NES, I don't think I do with any other system. Are you supposed to do that with the SNES or Genesis?

Early revisions of Zelda 1 lack the reset warning-the NP issue mentioned marks the point when Nintendo made the change.

Also, Tecmo Super Bowl's backup memory becomes extremely volatile as you approach the end of the regular season, so not holding reset with that game is akin to playing with fire.

Never have…

as I never have follow the rules of holding reset, and never have lost any game saves.

I've always done it, but I'm not sure what the reasoning is. I can see maybe 'softening' the blow of the powr button but... *shrugs*. Always seemed a minor thing to do.

'Course now I use a Famicom and the "reset-power" combo is slightly harder to pull off. Then again I don't play any battery save games at the moment - ha.

I guess I'm the unlucky sucker. I have had many problems with this. Dating all the way back to the begining. When I was a kid it happend alot. Seriously alot. Zelda a couple times. Dragon Warrior hurt. Just a couple years ago it was happening again on Super Metroid and I couldn't figure it out. It was driving me crazy. Some times it would erase and not others. Arrrrg! Then my friend reminded me about holding the reset button and wuallla! It worked!
