Admins over there: If this isn't the right place to post it, please lock/delete this thread. But I have to tell someone that's actually gonna be interested about it :): I just bought myself my very first Playstation!

Yeah, I know. Giant step for me, but kinda mediocre for mankind. But I am indeed very happy. Videogames are very expensive here in Brazil, so I've never had the lastest system when I was a kid. There were other priorities. In fact, I never went beyond 16-Bit consoles - until now!!

This PSOne is my first cd-based system, and the first time I'll be actually able to play 3D games whenever I want, and not at some friend's house. Now I finally got one - and visiting this forums regularlly was a part of the whole process.

So, thanks, everyone. Really. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'll play some Castlevania: SOTN. Very first game I bought - and I heard about it here!

I was really confused that this was your first CD based system. Then I noticed that you are from Brazil, so I'm guessing it may not be so prevalent there.

Congrats on getting one, still one of the better game libraries out there. Enjoy !!!!

So you paid how much? There's a career to be made running used PSX systems down to Brazil if that's the case... kinda like the opposite of a rumrunner I guess ;)

Well congrats on scoring yourself a sweet game system. There's no shortage of awesome games for it no matter what genre you're into.

Have fun :D

Future career prospects: Boss of Brazilian Video Game Cartel.

Always wanted to visit Rio de Janeiro. Would have to learn Portuguese I suppose. Sounds like the money is worth it though. LOL

If there's anything to be learned here, it's that Brazilian women are hot.

Congrats. You are only 13 years too late. Lucky for you the PS1 still has a great library of games to play. I recommend:

Syphon Filter 1-3
Bust-A-Groove 1-2
Medevil 1-2
Crash Team Racing
WWF Smackdown 1-2
Tekken 3
Soul Blade
Dead or Alive
Guilty Gear
Incredible Crisis

That should get you started. I hope all those games got released down there.

I guess I got lucky, Natinho (and everyone who asked). I bought mine directly from a co-worker for R$100 - BOXED (I was expecting it loose!)!! No manuals or anything, but the styrofoam protection is still there. One controller, and two games: 007 - The World is Not Enough (haven't quite played it yet), and Legend of Legaia (I'm not that fond of RPGs, but I really liked this one). It's a pretty good price around here, I guess.

Thatm and I bought Symphony of The Night for 10 brazilian bucks at the nearest pirate seller - it sucks, but It's almost impossible to find original stuff around here, specially for the PSX. And another R$10 for a memory card.

You're also right, Natinho, about the abusive cart prices practiced here in Brazil. It sucks to be a (retro)gamer here. I follow the discussions about prices on the forum, and they make me really envious.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll make sure to look out for them. Hooray, I got a PSOne - 13 years late, as The 1 2 P said! LOL

Congrats!

If you're going to get pirate games, just download them and burn them onto a blank cd. There are many tutorials online. It makes more sense than actually paying for one.

Man, that makes me feel like a cheap skate. I hate paying over $3 for a NES game or over $5 for a SNES game.

I was thinking the same thing, when i go to mexico they always have high price on original stuff and tons of bootleg items.

these prices are dirt cheap... in usd. according to what we earn.

i do not know how much you or your family earns a year, but those prices are standard (~5$ USD for a gen cart) and very affordable here.

My mind reels as to the sheer amount of great gaming you can now have. Gran Turismo 1 and 2...FF7(even though you don't like rpgs you MUST play this game because it is a very important game historically)...Crash Bandicoot games...Spyro The Dragon 1,2 and 3....Medal Of Honor 1 and 2...Ridge Racer 4 (incredible) and yes, older stuff like Tomba! (which I will never part with...lol)....the list is nearly endless.

Game you should get:

Twisted Metal.
The original is just a masterpiece of a game.

Bushido Blade.
Very different game. Fighting, but you can take dudes out in 1 hit. This is an acquired taste that is not for everybody, but definatelty fun.

Tiger Woods 99
Here is the reason: If you get a first print run of it, you will have the south park pilot episode (Jesus vs Santa on there). I bought it and have that. You pop the ps1 disc in your computer and it is one of the .dat files that you open up in wmp and it will play it. Check on the net, it is totally real, somebody at EA thought it would be awesome to dump the south park pilot episode onto the tw99 discs. I say first run, because I have been informed that they made later runs getting rid of that.

How's the collecting going?

I believe South America is a PAL region, so you might want to consider getting a modchip or something, if you like imports.

No here we are NTSC.
And i do think that EVERY SINGLE PSX unit here is modded.
And Poofta!, yes it is quite standard price but keep in mind it is loose´s price and when it comes to system like PS2 the games goes around 100-150 brand-new, i bought two weeks ago a GH version of God of War 2(BTW finished it yesterday,GREAT game) for 99,90 R$

the games you quoted before are the same price loose here in stores as well, so youre not over paying. as for GH GoW2, yes that is pricey, that translates into about $42... so twice as much as it is here. (GH here is 20$ but obviously the pricing in brazil is different, how much is a new ps3/360 game? 140-190 R$? (60-80 USD)?

i thought secam was a subformat of ntsc... eh, whatever (i too am surprised brazil is ntsc, i know for fact brazilian consoles dont work here)

btw, you should absolutely get one of the tactics ogre games, final fantasy tactics (and 7), breath of fire 3, megaman x (any of em), Loaded (or ReLoaded), R4, tekken 3, tomba! and hell there so many more i just cant think right now! im sure theres a thread in the classic discussions forum (that is still around, yes?) with the top 50 psone games or something.

enjoy man!

Brazil uses NTSC? I had no idea.

NTSC, for the PS, is still split into NTSC US and NTSC Japan.
