From what I've read on the internet, the Mark III has a different cartridge port than the Master System, but what about the card port? And can you play SG-1000/SC-3000 card games as well?

I also remember reading a while back that someone managed to accidentally throw their SMS into "Mark III mode" (Showed the Mark III logo on bootup, etc) by banging the reset button... did anyone ever manage to figure out how to install a switch to change regions on the fly, or was the whole thing just a hoax?

There is a way to change/install an Eng/Jap language switch on a SMS...It is easy and simple....Take apart your SMS and locate the 315-5216 chip on the motherboard, solder a wire to pin 34 to a switch middle leg( 2 leg-switch) and the other leg to Ground(0v)......This is how it works: .....pin 34+5vcc=Eng mode....pin 34+Ground= Japanese mode...
Just keep in mind that there is no magical FM sound...

There was an excellent discussion here. I learned that a Japanese SEGA Master System can play games from all of the previous SEGA systems.

So... I assume the pin is normally connected to 5V then, in which case your directions would end up shorting out the power supply through the switch... I believe you'd have to wire the other leg of the switch to 5V, and cut the trace on the motherboard for this to work.

I don't suppose anyone has managed to successfully wire the FM chip into a SMS?

You dont't have to lift the pin....In this case, 0v is >Vcc ,therefore there is no short....

Zero, if you go to SMSpower.org, a member there sells an adapter board you can install in your system (there's solder-in and an expansion port model) to give you FM sound, even in some games that were US-only! I think it's somewhere around $35 or something, and well worth it.
