All AES systems can play carts from any region. The language you get, however will depend on what region the system if from. So, a US cart in a Japanese machine will display Japanese.

From the watching I've done, seems like $200-$300 is fair for a system with no games. Or you can buy a brand new one from neo-geo.com for $1200! :o

is there a way to tell which region a system is from?

Here's another language question, do all Japanese MVS carts have an English option? I'd like to be able to play Quiz King of Fighters one day.

I got my AES system boxed with 3 games for 300 shipped from Japan. So it's possible to find a system for around 150 or so, no box, no games.

As for Tempest's MVS question, I think you have to get some sort of bios installed on your MVS system. I don't know much about it, you can probably find out more about it in the tech forums at ng.com. I have a Japanese system and I play my MVS carts through a phantom 1 converter. Even my US MVS carts play in Japanese, and most or all MVS carts I've played don't have a language option. For me to play MVS carts in english, I would have to get my AES system modded. Not sure if you can do the same with a MVS system.

It's not an option, but if you have a US or Europe BIOS, the game will play in English. My League Bowling is Japanese, and it plays in English on my Europe board, just like the home cart thing. Some of the games allow you to change the language on a European BIOS. Like I have a few games I can change to Spanish or Portugiuse instead of English.

That 4X BIOS or the Universal BIOS will let you change the board's region. And there is an equivalent for the home system, I just can't remember what they're calling it (debug BIOS, I think.)

HOWEVER...all the Neo Quiz and Majhong games were designed only for the Japanese market, so playing those games in an English system will still give you Japanese text. AFAIK, those are the only exceptions to the rule.

As for telling the region of a home machine, I'm sure there's a way other than poping in a cart. I'd bet the serial number tells somehow. I don't know too much about the home systems, so maybe someone else can help you there.

Damn it! I knew it was too good to be true. Oh well, those games suck anyway.
