whats with this, i find TONS of them. its rather tempting to get one to tinker with, and i have alot of spare drives sitting arround i am sure i could wirk some sata and power extensions into it so i could use a standard drive.

any one know the rhyme or reason for this?
i looked it up and i couldnt find many promenent problems with the hard drives in these.

You can remove/replace the hard drive in PS3's really easily using a laptop/notebook drive:

If you're seeing lots on sale without hardrives (on eBay, I'm guessing?) it's probably because people figure they can make more money from selling the console and hard drive seperately.

yeah replacing it would be easy, and much cheaper than a 360 without a hard drive.

i know its easy to replace thats a given but why are there so many for sale with out any sort of hard drives.

the only thing that concerns me is alot of them dont have the cage or caddy (depending on the type of person you are) and they are on sale seperatly but at practicly half the cost of the system.

i am considering if i get one and it doesent have the caddy just to get a small rubber mat for the bottom and to take up the gap and rubber hose for the other end and the top to keep it from moving.

That is pretty strange... I'd like to put in a 320 gig eventually too though.

Might make it more of a pain in the ass down the road to find a working 20/60 gig model without the risk of being lied to. :P

its pretty un invasive though and doesent void the warranty.
i dont think its something that would affect its collectors price much if at all. and considering the way PS3 is you would most likely need the added space.

a PS3 isnt high on my list of things to get but if i can get one cheap enough it would be cool to tinker with it and see if i can fix it.

i love taking things apart and if i can fix it its even better.

i did finally give in, after so many years i signed up for a e-gay account so, but mabe i can score one on the cheap. alot of them come with the controlers and hookups and stuff so if i cant do any thing with it i can sell that stuff off

i dont really see what much could be wrong with it aside from the hard drive missing. i see occasional DRE stories but its attributed to dust or other such filth. occasionally i come across stories of grinding optical drives but thats something i have dealt with before and i am sure a doner optical drive should have a suitable set of gearing or a new worm gear. i havent come across many stories that have gone up in smoke out of no where, there was usually the "playing it in a power storm and now it doesent work" stories or the similar. so we'll see

This was my concern upon reading this thread, but…

a 20GB model cannot be mistaken.
•It will have all black finish WITH OUT any chrome or aluminum trim.
•It will lack the card slots.
•It will not have wi-fi support. - check next to front usp ports to only see the HD indicator light and no light for wirless access.
•It will have four USB ports on the front.

a 60GB model is difficult to mistake
• It will have card slots
• It will have four USB ports on the front
• It will have ONLY chrome trim - if the trim is aluminum that it is NOT a 60GB unit

Dead giveaway to NOT being a fully backwards compatible PS3:
•two USB ports in front
•aluminum finish

Can some one with an 80GB unit inform if that unit initially come out with 4 USB ports? Also when do they discontinue the card slots?

20GB models are very easy to locate as they are the only model with out wi-fi and have the very nice, slick, all black finish.

Stuff.

Ahh, good information there. Thanks. I'll keep that in mind if I ever have to search for a replacement for my 60 gig model. :)

20 gigs are virtually impossible to find, the problem is (though I'm far from sure about this) that 80 gigs are supposedly undistinguishable from a 60g, and the 80s use software emulation :(

why not just keep a PS2 hooked up then.
