i have a problem, about a year ago I primitively modded my US SNES to play SFC carts by removing the plastic tabs inside the console on either side of the pin connecter. I happily played sfc and snes carts alike for the past year with no problems. Just recently my snes has completely stopped working. If i hit the power switch, the light comes on and the channel it's tuned to gets a bit fuzzy (its a blue screen normally with the digital '3' in the top right corner) but the screen remains blue, no go. I have messed around with every channel, inspected the rf adapter, mostly everything i can think of. Anyone have any ideas on what's wrong?
It isn't possible that I've somehow screwed up the system with the sfc carts is it? I am completely ignorant to the technical workings of the consoles, i simply play. i only have a basic working knowledge of the snes for basic upkeep and have no idea if this is even a stupid question or not. If this is the wrong forum, please feel free to move the thread. I'm just wanting to get my old snes back- or begin the healing process by knowing that i have to just settle for getting a new console.
Thanks for the help

I don't think it has to do with your SFC modification. I hope nothing fried on the board =/
And this topic should probably be moved to Technical and Restoration Society.

Sounds like a bad RF. Try replacing the RF adapter. If you have a GameCube, use the AV cord from that and see if the SNES will work. It is very unlikely your SNES just stopped working. The power supply could be bad also, but I bet it is just a RF problem.
(another thought) I am sure you switched the Channel selector from 3 to 4 a few times. I have seen those get kinda stuck, so just switching it back and forth kinda lossen it up. Try both channels also.

Take the chance to mod it for S-video out or get a s-video out cable.

An s-video mod isn't necessary unless it is a Model 2 SNES. If you are going to replace the RF adapter, just skip that and get an a/v cable for it. It uses the same one as a Gamecube or N64, so while you probably won't find a new SNES cable at the store, you will likely find a Gamecube one. And if you want to go with S-video, they make those multi ones that will work for several systems and output a/v or s-video.

Yes, what Cornelius said but with a little more detail:
SNES Model 1, the big, clunky box can easily use a Gamecube S-video cable; I've got a monster cable that I'll sometimes switch between my N64, Gamecube, and SNES to get better video output when I find the composite lacking.
SNES Model 2, the little cute one with no "power-on" LED does NOT support s-video, but it will still support the composite video cables (i.e., the Red-White-and-Yellow ones).
If you're unsure which model you have, either find out or go with a new composite cable. If the power light comes on, it's probably your cable; if not, probably your power supply, as someone else said.
Try things before you pronounce it "dead." But still, even if that, buying a new SNES console-only is pretty cheap.

Just make sure you get an official cable or a known cheaper one that actually uses the s-video pins. Some cheap cables use the composite pins and convert it to s-video and looks like crap.
Why are you still using the RF anyway?

i'm still using the rf because that's what the console came with out of the box in 1993, haha. I've never really been concerned with sound/picture quality enough to look into other cables etc.
I'm headed to the game shops now to pick a gc cable up.

I just went through a similar problem.
SNES system would not show up on screen using the AV..
So I tired an RF and it works...
Perfectly good looking AV wires from my Game Cube..Somewhere they are broken as I tried them with two GS and another SNES..
So I'm back to using the RF until I get more AVs
