View Full Version : Room of Doom idea

I collect NES/SNES games, cart only (and I have only a couple sleeves) and am planning a "Room of Doom." I know some of you will detest this idea, but I was thinking about putting a hole in the back of my NES carts (not my rares, obviously) and hanging them on the walls, covering the entire room in carts, labels out. I plan on using a woodburner or soldering iron to melt a hole and slot in the back of the cart and using thumbtacks to keep them on the wall. I think it would look cool to have a room wallpapered in NES carts. My question is: are there any games that take up the majority of the cart? I don't want to melt through a circuit board. Games like Ultimate Stuntman are out, since they have the selector switch on the back. Any others?

it will look cool, but displaying games this way won't give you a lot of space

This is such a bad idea for alot of reasons. You risk ruining the games and you will definately ruin the value of the carts. I can imagine someone shutting/slamming a door and having all your games fall.

If you have to do this, why dont you use Velcro. Get sticky tape Velcro and hang it on the wall that way. Either way you go, I suggest testing it out on a dozen games for a few weeks and see how well it works. Please post pictures, whether it is a train-wreck or really cool, I would love to see it.

If you dont like Velcro, you could get a bunch of the Self-sticky Hang-tabs(like the ones on the NES boxes) and put them on your carts. They would be easy to hang and they are cheap. Either way.....pictures are a must!

From my experience the boards inside the cartridges get smaller the older you go. The board for Super Mario is only like an inch and a half but, new games can take up most of the cartridge. Also, anything that has battery back up is going to be on the large side.

Something else I just thought of: The tool you use to open a cart isn't expensive. You could just buy one and open up any that you are thinking of hanging and check out the board size before making a hole.

You know what would be better and easier to "fix" later on? Velcro. You can ahere it to the back of your carts and put strips on the wall to hang them with, if you really wanna do the lined-wall look. At least you can use some goo gone to get the sticky off later on if you change your mind.

I'm all for this, so long as you don't destroy anything legitimately valuable. I can't give you any advice, but I'm for anything that looks awesome.

Exactly. If that is your only reason for doing this, please find a different method. Just the thought of this will keep me awake tonight.

hee hee, they are your games so naturaly do what you like with em, but the velcro idea sounds better, or you could even just get sticky hang tabs (we use em at work) so you can hang em that way.

and hey with the velcro idea you could always play a game of pin the nes game on the wall or something when you get bored ;-)

Why not get clear plastic sleeve pages, like the ones they make for trading cards? I know they make ones with bigger pockets. That way you don't have to do anything to the carts but they'd still be visible.

Its cool your trying to be creative. But this isn't the way to go. If you ever change your mind, your gonna have a boat load of ruined games.

If you do drill a hole and later change your mind you can always buy a bulk lot of cheap crappy NES games and switch the backs.

Waiting with pen and paper, ready to jot down the location of said mysterious source of cheap bulk lot NES games.

Y'know, that's a lot like walking into someone's house and seeing a crapload of dead animals on the wall.

Only they're not dead. They're just NAILED TO THE FREAKING WALL.

Don't do it. Do velcro at least, damn.

HOLES IN CARTS ARE BAD M'KAY!?

There's even adhesive hang tabs made for hanging pictures/artwork, you could just use them on the backs of the carts. They should be removable later with Goo Gone if you ever changed your mind, plus they would be easier to use than drilling out every NES cart. I've actually seen them used on collector plates to hang them up on walls.

Damaging NES carts intentionally.... :bad-words:

I was about to say the same thing. If I were to do this room of doom idea I would do this. Goo gone really does get the goo gone. Who woulda thought? :o

P.S. You could always use a hammer and nail! /sarcasm :p

Please use one of the many many products available that will hold a cart to a wall without damaging it. If for no other reason, so the people around here can sleep at night.

From time to time you will see a "sports lot" of NES games go for cheap. 10 John Elway's Quaterbacks sold for .99 plus shipping not too long ago (although I'll admit I have no idea what the shipping was).

May as well use Lag Bolts...

Okay, okay. I'm sold on the Velcro idea. It would probably save alot of time in the long run. *Whew* I knew it would be a touchy subject. Oh, and Kudos to gumdrops and jb143's responses. I'm sitting at my desk at work laughing and everyone here is looking at me like I'm crazy now (crazier, I suppose, since I thought of cutting holes in the back of my carts). Thanks, everybody! If I get this thing up and going I'll get some pics.

Just currious...Why was your plan to also ruin your wood burner or soldering iron when a drill would work so much better and faster?

If you do drill a hole and later change your mind you can always buy a bulk lot of cheap crappy NES games and switch the backs.

I'm not sure I understand this solution either. Wouldn't that just be transferring the problem? My understaning was that it was going to be cheaper games on the wall in the first place.

Something else that might work for you. Instead of attaching the game to the wall, attach something to hold the game, like a plastic clip on each side or something. That way the end result would look the same but in this case you could easily take the game down and play it.

I didn't want to use a drill because I didn't want to disassemble every game to pick out plastic shavings. I planned on using cheaper games originally, but I plan on using all of them now since I have an alternate method of putting them on the wall. I'll probably go with the Velcro. Double sided tape would eventually lose its ability to adhere. I thought of using strips of wood across the walls to set the carts on, but I wanted the games to look clean and unobstructed. See what happens when you don't have enough dust covers for your games? You start getting crazy ideas!!

Do it. :rocker: The pegboard and rattle cans are dirt cheap at Home Depot and the hangers are dirt cheap at Wal-Mart.

Just one thing: wouldn't the velcro on the carts cause them to get stuck inside the NES? With the holes, you can just pick them up from the wall and play.

Sorry if I'm keeping someone awake tonight, but it just ocurred to me...

EDIT: Just saw the pegboard idea. Doesn't look as cool as the carts directly on the wall, IMO, but its definitely better then drilling holes on them.

It could work, though. Paint the board white, fashion a nice big Nintendo stencil and spray it red. Maybe a Mario or a Nintendo Seal of Quality. Or something... Dunno. Just tossing out ideas...
