What the F***?

I saw many commercials in my day, but never saw this one. They actually show 2600 Pac-man and claim it is the Colecovision version!

Well, I suppose the logic (however flawed it is) is that you're playing the 2600 version via the expansion module. Funny that it results in Atari making fun of their own creation though... what a bunch of assholes.

They're addressing the expansion module that allows 2600 games to work on the Colecovision. Right in the beginning they said "If you think Colecovision plays all Atari cartridges..."

I'm surprised there was an adapter fot the 5200 that allows 2600 games to play on it, I wasn't aware of it. Cool commercial.

There's definitely some head asploding logic at work in that ad: "Here's the crappy 2600 version running on a Colecovision. Here's the nice 5200 version. So buy the 5200, and incidentally, now we've made an adapter in case you want to keep playing the crappy 2600 version as well." I guess the conclusion one is supposed to draw from this is that there's no reason to buy a Colecovision when Atari has released a comparable machine with backward compatibility as well. Too bad Atari didn't jump on the BC bandwagon with the 5200's initial release. Instead they had to play catch-up.

Yes, funny how they're pushing the newer hardware but with a game most home console owners had played and have more than likely lost faith in Atari producing quality of. I'm confident it was push to advertise that their production quality had improved and could compete in the downward spiraling game market.

Well, it was actually introduced around the time Atari was changing from the 4-port to the 2-port model and made some hardware modifications. Due to the alterations the adaptor works fine with the 2-port model, however most of the 4-ports, primarily earlier ones (Identifiable with the model number) require a modification kit. I believe Atari offered them at one point and are still purchasable today through various buying channels, otherwise the 4-port board will short out.

Hey, at least Coleco could make a good comeback ad.

It becomes even more ironic when you see the Atarisoft Pac-Man for the ColecoVision, which Atari had planned to release in 1983. It blew the 5200 version out of the water. Just as Joust and Dig Dug would've, had they been 100% completed.

Funny, since the 5200 was supposed to have been so superior, that Atari would make better versions for an "inferior" one.

But Atari had a secret weapon that was going to topple the Colecovision (and everyone else at the time)....the 7800! They probably weren't even thinking of the 5200 as a part of their future at that point. Too bad they shelved the 7800 for a few years ultimately making it inferior to current offerings (SMS, NES) when it WAS finally released.
