View Full Version : Broken Master System (Video problems)

Damn. If the Master System were more popular in America, I could probably find more help. I bought my Master System used a few months ago (not that I could buy it new) and just recently, out of the blue the video stopped displaying. When I plug it through the RF into a VCR, I get nothing, but when I plug it into a TV directly I get a gray bar at the bottom of the screen, and some queer noises. I bought an AV cable recently, hoping it would solve it, but it has not. Oh, this is also a Model 1.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe some components in the video circuit are damaged and should be replaced. You'd have to take apart the console to find out.

Does it work with no game in? (like the built-in games, do they work?)

Strangely, I've never tried that. No it does not work with no game in it. It does what it does with a game in it. The screen kind of scrambles. I'll take of picture of it. As well as the innards of my Master System. I'm not quite good at understanding these things myself, I'm afraid.

First comes the grey things on the TV screen. They don't cover it, just dance around the screen

Second is the inside of the Master System. Because I know so little about the structure, I'll post pictures. If they don't help, any insight would be nice. Such as how to fix or replace certain components.

I apologize for the grain, I took the pictures with my PSP camera.

Are you using the correct power adapter from Sega?

Are you using the correct power adapter from Sega?

It wasn't an official power cord. But it had been working, so I'd never considered it. I thought maybe I had gotten the power cords switched around when I was organizing my consoles. That ws around when they stopped working. I think I'll check through all of my power cords again just to be sure. I didn't think it would be a problem though. I though I heard somewhere that so long as it's getting enough power the Master System will only take what it needs. And this AC Adaptor has an input of 120VAC 60Hz 250mA, and an output of 12VAC 1500MA. The model type is AD-1201500AU

Well, Goddammit. Don't I feel stupid. I had a spare Genesis power cord lying around, tested it out on it. And would you believe it, it works. Thanks for the help guys.

For future reference, the system will only take the current that it needs (amperage), but will have to contend with whatever voltage is provided. In other words...

Voltage - you need to be around what the console requires.
Amperage - at least what the console requires but more is fine as it will only draw what it needs.

Whoa... 12V AC? I have a hard time it ever worked with that supply.

I had a feeling that was the problem, someone else had the same problem recently on another forum I'm on and that's what was causing it.

I should point out the Sega Master System uses DC current, not AC. That's what causes the most problems when not using the correct adapter with this system(even when the voltage and other specs match).

What I probably did was mix up power cords when I was rearranging my consoles.

To everyone else. Thank you, I'll keep this information in mind.
