View Full Version : Castlevania Chronicles on PSN for PS3/PSP today? What a pleasant surprise!

While it's certainly no Dracula X or Symphony of the Night, fans of the original NES Castlevania will be pleased to hear that the PS1 title "Castlevania Chronicles" is up on the US PSN for a mere $5.99!
It's essentially a big remix of Castlevania 1 with graphics that are very reminiscent of Super Castlevania 4.
(It's actually a port of the game from the Japanese Sharp X68000 computer)
It doesn't really have any bells or whistles in terms of gameplay (if you've played Castlevania 1, that's pretty much what you're going to get) but hey ... I certainly wasn't expecting it on the PSN store at all today, so, like I said - it's a pleasant surprise (and a nice way of getting your hands on what is genuinely a rare PS1 game in the US).
It can be played on your PS3, and copied over to your PSP for play on the go.
*OR* Directly downloaded (in a WiFi environment) from the PSN store onto the PSP via recent firmware updates.
*OR* Downloaded to your PC via the free official PSP Manager software and transferred over to your PSP.

I actually liked this game. Like you said, it's certainly no Symphony of The Night, but I enjoyed having a second Castlevania game to play on my Playstation back in the day.
That's pretty sweet actually, I remember looking around for that game for a while at the end of the PS1 era and was never able to find it, I'll have to download it next paycheck. Nice to see them finally releasing another PSX game that's actually worth purchasing.

CV Chronicles > SotN. SotN is a good game, but it's the FF7 of CV games if you will. I'm also more of a fan of the level based titles myself, so almost anything like CV4, CV, CV3, etc, will be better. Circle of the Moon is my favorite exploration title solely because it is more balanced and plays like a mix between the older and newer.

This is great news, especially for Castlevania fans. It is a good remake of the original's old-school gameplay, and for the price, much more reasonable than the $50+ the original PS1 release goes for on eBay.

Fair enough.
While I do adore SOTN and some of the other "Metroidvania" games, CVIII:Dracula's Curse will always be my favorite and always get my vote for all time best in the series.

Kudos to them for releasing that title again. I remember that having a pretty limited print run and it was only $20 when it was released. I still have my copy and I enjoy it quite a bit. $5.99 for that game is a bargain, IMO.

I was only ever able to find a disk only copy of CV:C and played it a couple times. The rarity guide says its an R5 but I'm sure with all the castlevania fans out there, there are much fewer available. I think I may have to download this just to be able to play it on my PSP. Finally something I like for PS1/PSN games, I could care less about Jet Moto and such.

I picked this one up back in the day, and I am happy that they are making games like this available over the PSN. I think if they can continue to relase games like this over the PSN, this will definately help them out.
On a side note....this game is friggin hard

I have an import copy of this, very fun game. I downloaded this to my PSP. It may be difficult but not nearly as much as the original CV.

It's not that hard, although there are a few tricky boss battles. To be honest I'm having a much harder time trying to complete Super Castlevania 4 than I ever had with this game.

Me too. During the PS1 days I always got the Japanese import versions of my favorite games(this, B-A-G, Syphon Filter, etc) so that I had an excuse to replay them. One of these days I'll have to make a thread with pictures of all the US/Japan comparisions.

Ironically, I found Castlevania 4 to be easier. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt there limited continues in Chronicles?

I'm fine with my disc version from back in the day, but it's cool that Sony released this for download. There's so many awesome PS1 games out there. Maybe Sony will start treating us to what Japan has been enjoying on PSN for so long now (http://www.otakuwiki.com/index.php/List_Of_Japanese_PSOne_PSN_Games).

I'm hoping for Silent Hill and Suikoden 1&2.
I'll be getting this as well though.

I want my PSP Suikoden 1 & 2 collection. Damn it Sony.
This is an awesoe release. I'd pick this up if I used PSN. Hopefully there are more games like this released. I wish these services would be used more to release games that were only released in certain regions. Some don't even have to be translated.

That list fails. Arc the Lad 2 has been on the Japanese PSN for awhile and it's not on this list. Also, Monster Tournament is up there. The game is pretty much worthless without Arc the Lad 2, so don't really see why the author didn't realize that.

I'm not sure. And I don't have access to my PS games to find out:(

There hasn't been a Castlevania game that's had limited continues. Chronicles itself has a save feature as well that saves between every stage, so it would have been retarded if they put limited continues(which they didn't.)
However, I think just like Zelda, they show how many continues are actually used.

The US NES version of C1 has limited continues, no?

Jeez, the original is that expensive? I remember seeing it at Rhino video games like 2 years ago for 30$. Right next to R-Types and the Final Fantasies and all sorts of other PS1 goodies...that was right next to Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike, Project Justice and Garou: Mark of the Wolves for Dreamcast.
RIP Rhino :(. Eaten by Blockbuster. Then Gamestop.

If you go by the completed auction option you'll see that the majority of this game has ended in the $20-30 price range for the last two weeks. So it's really not that expensive considering only 15,000-25,000 copies exist for a system that sold well over 100 million units:wink 2:
