It's in HD, supports up to six player online races and it looks pretty nice. I liked the music in the video. I have got to get my Xbox connected to Live.

Oooh, that's nice.

It does sadden me that OutRun has been relegated to a download and there's no physical product, though.

Hell yes!

Outrun is one of the properties that Sega rebooted in recent years with much technical success IMO.

Though I'm not sure what Luke Plunkett is talking about ... it looks pretty much exactly like Sumo Digitals renditions of the game on home consoles/portables.

Whatever the case may be, I'll be picking this one up for sures.

Thanks for posting, I can't wait to download this. :)

Between this, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and House of the Dead Overkill, will be a decent year to be a Sega fan.

Great ! Now give me Scud race .

Amen!

Throw in Daytona 2 and the original Daytona, ala the Sega Rally 1995 disc for PS2, and you have a real winner. Sega really just needs to do an arcade racing compilation. We need good home versions of OutRunners & Turbo OutRun as well. A man can dream...

Back to the topic, maybe people with actually buy OutRun 2 this time. Sales for the surprisingly good looking PS2 version were relatively brisk, but the game generally doesn't get anywhere near the respect it deserves. The XBox version of C2C is awesome, as is the original release (mostly for the emulated original).

Saw this earlier, can't wait. C2C on the Xbox was excellent so I'm hoping this is just as good.

Go on Sega, bring Daytona, Rally and Scud Race to PSN. Hell, how about a bit of Crazy Taxi while you're at it...

Anyone know whats included? That link says its a remake of the arcade original in what appears to be the Outrun 2 engine.

At the same time, that video appears in that link to include some Outrun 2 and Outrun 2 SP stages, which would surprise me since we'd be looking at a game more in line as far as file size goes to a Xbox Original than a XBLA arcade or PSN release. Hopefully they don't have any file size limitations to work within, and they include all Outrun2/2006 content with their new remake of the arcade original.

Original game rebuilt in the new engine + all of the bonus stuff from Outrun 2 and C2C, from what I understand.

Hopefully that includes the Scud Race course. *swoon*

I just want the Outrun 2 SPX tracks.

Do you mean DX or SDX? Its my understanding that there weren't any new tracks in it, its just running on new hardware with the addition of linked cooperative play.

If there was a new set of tracks created for it, I want those too. :)

This will be nice. As it currently stands the only version I have is on that iffy Sega Ages comp disc for PS2...actually, though, Outrun is one of the better games on it.

Still, this will kick ass. Simple arcade-style racing. I'm stoked.

Leo_A
12-20-2008, 12:51 AM
A producer at Sumo that has posted at GameFaqs since the days before Outrun 2 was released on the Xbox confirms that Outrun 2 tracks won't be included due to size constraints, but hinted they might be considered for DLC.

Sounds like we're just getting the Outrun 2 SP tracks, but I haven't seen that spelled out. Besides that Kotaku link, I've seen no mentions of the original Outrun tracks being remade in the Outrun 2 engine, which would've been cool.

So don't go selling your Outrun 2/Outrun 2006 disc just yet. :)

The Sega Ages remake of Outrun was pretty nice. Far inferior to the arcade original or the Outrun 2 titles, but it was still a pleasant experience. Made buying that disc worthwhile. :)

SDX, I think.
I remember reading about it when it was new to the arcades, and it reportedly had new tracks. Perhaps the article I read was referring to the SP tracks, though, and I just misunderstood.

No new tracks in SP DX, I'm afraid, unless they're REALLY hidden, and I didn't find them the times I played it. :)

It would seem that Outrun Online Arcade is going to be exclusively for Xbox owners in the USA. It's still coming to the European PlayStation Network and everywhere else, just not the USA.

I love me some Outrun as I already have both of the XBOX versions, but I'm still conflicted as to whether I want to get this or not. It seems that the only thing thats gonna be different from what I already have is the online multiplayer. If they give me some new tracks, new play modes, or anything else besides that I'll be in for sure.

I have a feeling the XBLA exclusivity is just a misunderstanding because there is no logical reason for it.
Of course, this is Sega we're dealing with, so who knows.

Not releasing it on PSN in the US is a pretty stupid decision. Why pass up on an opportunity for more sales? It's not like they'll be out a lot of money if it doesn't sell well, since it's not a retail release.

Leo_A

He wasn't able to elaborate, I agree that it doesn't make any sense. I was hoping to get both versions and see how well each version turned out. Guess we'll have to try to buy it off the UK PSN store.

It was DarthSol at the GameFaqs Xbox Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast forum that passed along the information, if anyone is curious. He's well known as a employee of Sumo Digital and has been passing along information since Outrun 2.

Its about the only GameFaqs forum worth visiting thanks to him occasionally dropping by and giving fans whatever information he's able to.

...they had C2C/2006 on the Xbox?? I have never seen a copy in the wild; only for the ps2/psp. If I had ever seen it, I would've bought it for sure since I played the hell out of OutRun 2 for my Xbox! It's honestly probably my fave Xbox 1 game. If only I could transfer data from my Xbox to my 360! I just don't want to have to race Wolf again...

Yeah its pretty rare, but I was lucky and managed to find it for the cool price of only $10 at Gamespot recently. Awesome game too as I was worried it would be too similar to Outrun 2, but it has all new tracks and new game modes. The two together give me all the Outrun my heart desires.

It was basically a online exclusive, I've only seen one used copy at a GameStop.

I ordered mine from Wal-Mart when it was first released.

You do realize the 15 Outrun 2 tracks are on Coast 2 Coast? Its not all new tracks, only the 15 tracks from Outrun 2 SP are new, the 15 outrun 2 tracks are included as well. You have to press a button to switch to them when your in arcade mode I believe (Some people never realized this...). You only need Outrun 2 for the original arcade game and the Daytona/Scud Race bonus tracks, and I suppose the missions were unique (Something I never ventured too deep into for either game, I stuck to just running the arcade modes over and over :)).

Not sure if its been mentioned, but have any of you given GTI Club+ a try on PSN? Sumo Digital did a excellent job giving that classic Konami arcade a racer a modern redo on the PS3.

There's already a thread this, but it's a regional thing. Outrun 2006 C2C (xbox) is much more common in my area that it seems to be in the states. I had no problem finding my copy and I went to EB Games tonight and they had a copy in their used section.

Outrun 2006 basically included all the tracks from both the Outrun 2 arcade game and the Outrun 2 SP arcade game and then Sumo created a load of new Flagman and heart attack challenges and included a ton of unlockables. This new DLC version is more of a straight port of Outrun 2 SP. So there wont be the flagman challenges, as many songs. I think the 15-stage continuous mode is still in there though.

Is that because you think you have to have live to buy it, or you're just generally indisposed towards avoiding XBLA games because you hate the Live in general kind of thing?

(Every 360 has, by default, silver membership on XBL. As such you can download stuff without paying a dime to MS. That's how they inflate their Live numbers - they never mention how many people pay for the right to play others on the network, they simply tout how many 360s have been connected to the internet basically...)

I have several XBLA titles, I'm well aware of the free Silver membership. I meant that I don't want to buy it for 360 because if I wanted to play it online, I wouldn't be able to. This is one of the reasons I buy multiplatform games on PS3, aside from preferring the controller.

What I did was make an account and pick Hong Kong as your country. This way everything is still in English and they have PSN cards unlike Europe. Then grab a PSN card off eBay. You may want to wait until after it is released. I bought a Hong Kong PSN card but I am not 100% positive its going to be at Hong Kong PSN store, just assuming.

Its a stupid review.

Its just a HD release of Outrun 2 SP (No Outrun 2 tracks), so of course graphics aren't really going to be updated or there isn't going to be much new content. The arcade title ran on what was basically Xbox hardware with more ram, so we're just getting a version that's rendering at a higher resolution. Its going to look like what we already had since they were basically porting what we already had. Its not a new entry in the series, its just bringing what already existed to a new platform. The review should've been focusing on the accuracy of the port and the fun factor of the title, imo.

Its for the fans that loved the Outrun 2 titles and wanted a hd port of it that runs on their current generation consoles and for people new to the series, its not for people that had their fill of Outrun 2 with the past two releases and are going into this one wanting something more from the game. And if you never played any of the Outrun 2 titles, you'd love it I'd say. You'll only be experiencing half of the tracks in the series, but its not flawed and it never looked better, its running at a higher res than it did in the arcade even. If anything, I bet you like it so well that you'll want to track down copies of Outrun 2 and Outrun Coast 2 Coast for the Xbox afterwards to experience the other half of the tracks and do the different missions each has (Plus the two bonus courses that were unlockables in Outrun 2).

Its a port of Outrun 2 SP, its not Outrun 3. His review makes about as much sense if you want a analagy to it as a reviewer criticizing a rerelease of Robotron 2084 because new enemies weren't added or that Geometry Wars is prettier. He wasn't using the correct criteria to grade the title if you ask me.

I never expected this to be anything more than a port of Lindbergh Outrun 2 SP. But then that's exactly what I wanted. And for a tenner, you can't really complain. I'm sure if it sells well enough Sega will make the 15 original Outrun 2 courses available for a reasonable charge.

We've all seen the screen shots and the video and the game looks amazing. If the Xbox version is out on April 17th, I hope this will be on PSN either the 16th or 23rd. I really can't wait for this.

just play the original games on the 360 the emulation is good and its up scaled and rendered at 720p.

This is a better deal for ps3 owners since it would be the best ver to play on a sony system.
you have the psp and ps2 ports but they never looked or ran as good as on the 360.

The ps3 scaler can not even compare to the 360 rendering every thing at a true 720p.

So it's finally out on XBLA today. Anyone get it yet? I've heard a few people on GameFAQs complain about the frame rate dropping in certain parts but it doesn't sound like a deal breaker to me.

Also, anyone know if Outrun is compatible with the wheel controller?

Leo_A
04-15-2009, 10:03 PM
I have it, and its fully compatible with the MS wireless wheel.

I've also read and posted in those GameFaqs threads, and every issue mentioned is either not noticeable (Such as slow loading of the scenery for the Milky Way stage, seemed to load normally), multiplayer issues like invisible scenery (played multiple matches that went without a single hitch), and a smooth frame rate.

I noticed the occasional hiccup in the frame rate that I think would be unnoticeable enough where I wouldn't of even picked up on it if I hadn't been looking for it. I think some of the issues like the failure to load scenery might be a sign a few of those forum members have a RROD coming up soon for their consoles, imo.

I think its worthy of the 800 points. I'd of loved a more comprehensive release collecting every track, mission, music track, and so on from Outrun 2 and its Xbox bonus content and Outrun Coast 2 Coast (As I recall, each of the three releases had some exclusive content).

So basically my only complaint is that I wished we had got all the content so far that's been created for Outrun 2. Maybe in DLC...

I've played it for a little bit and like it so far. Feels basically like a stripped down version of Outrun 2 but I don't mind because it was only 800 points and it's in 720p.

Didn't notice any frame rate issues but the online portion seems real half assed. Every lobby I joined I was waiting in for at least 5 minutes waiting for the game to start. When the race finally started, I was stuck at the starting line for about 15 seconds because the 2 cars in front of me would not move and I had to slowly plow thru them.

Another strange thing that happened to me in an online race is that when I made my first turn at one of the forks, the game completely glitched and the road disappeared. I don't know if this was because we were supposed to race a certain route but if so, why weren't the other paths blocked off??

I bought it. What follows are some impressions from the "Shiney New Love" stage of game ownership.

I was extremely happy to see the game priced at 800 points. Everything had been announcing it at that price, but sources have lied... ahem... "been wrong" before. Lately things on Live Arcade have been overpriced. I skipped Galactrix because the 1600 point price tag just seemed too extravagant. But Outrun seemed high quality and the price made it extremely attractive.

The game certainly doesn't feel like a crap DL title like Mad Tracks. The quality is very high. I'd say it's definitely one of the highest quality Live Arcade games in terms of production. It could easily sit alongside many 360 bargain disc titles in terms of presentation.

Control is great. None of the racers for about the past 5 years have felt very good to me. Outrun has a little bit of wiggly fishtail, but nothing too offensive. The cars are responsive and there's good visual feedback to what you're doing to the controller. Rumble is used sparingly so it isn't the usual constant sextoy vibration style that so many other racing games do.

There's a great sensation of just zipping down the road and soaking in the scenery. I love games like these with open ended tracks and tons of different vistas. Gameplay is quick and it's easy to play "just one more time." The game does show it's arcade roots, though. It's best in short doses, and starts getting samey quick if played for prolonged periods.

The game modes are nothing special but add some variety. I remember hating Heart mode on Outrun 2, but in this version it doesn't seem anywhere near as bad. But truthfully, it's all just a sideshow to the original arcade style Outrun experience, and it's clear most of it was shoehorned in as an afterthought.

I'm not sure if there are any differences in the cars other than aesthetics. If there are no performance differences I don't mind because it lets people pick different cars instead of the same elite set that all other racing games are plagued with. You can customize colors and it all seems geared towards just letting the player differentiate themselves from a sea of red F50s. (I prefer a silver Tesstarosa)

I played quite a few multiplayer races with two other friends. This is probably the only game I've ever enjoyed the Catch Up feature. It kept us closely packed. It didn't ever encourage one player to hang in the back until the last 10 seconds of the race only to jump forward and win after an entire race of sitting in last place (or constant wrecks). There were a few other options such as disabling collisions (immaterial cars).

The main drawback with multiplayer was the lack of a way to put the traffic back into the game. Racing while weaving through the traffic would have been more fun, and is a cornerstone of the Outrun experience.

We didn't notice any bugs in multiplayer. Although one of us was initially suffering lag and teleporting around the track, typical lag symptom.

There are some interesting random bits here and there in the game. One race I saw the dragon from Panzer Dragoon Zwei come out while I was in between track sections.

I think it's a very good game, and a must buy at 800 points. I don't think fans in search of an arcade racer will be disappointed.

I got it last night as well. I never played any of the Xbox or PSP releases, but this game is pretty nice, and I haven't noticed any of the mentioned issues.

There was something going on with multiplayer, though. But I think the issue was just that the hosts were being a-holes and not starting the games or there was some kind of error....I sat in one lobby for several minutes and when I checked the host's gamercard, his status was "Away for 3 minutes". Dude probably started a game and just left.

A few people have also reported this, but I've not seen it yet myself. I have had the lobby "lock up" on me with the countdown on 1 and not jump to the race several times however.

And Outrun mode Goal D... was fourth, now sixth in the world currently! :D

Yeah, the same thing keeps happening to me. At first I figured the race already started and I had to wait for everyone to finish before the new one would start, but it does not take 7+ minuets to finish a race.

Another annoying thing is that the game froze up on me 3 times when I booted it from the 360 dash (right before the 'Sega' logo).

So yeah, the game is fun but VERY glitchy. Hopefully they'll patch it up soon.

I picked up a copy of Outrun 2 (xbox) a few weeks ago and it's essentially the same game as this new XBLA version. I tried the demo last night and confirmed there really is no substantial difference. One's in HD, the other isn't. That's about it.

First off, let me say I LOVED OutRun2 on the Xbox. Playing it at 480p/widescreen is a treat to the eyes, and honestly, "true" HD doesn't look very different between these two games.
Some major concerns hit me when I played the demo though, that are probably going to prevent me from shelling out $10 for this release.
1) No Challenge Mode?
Challenge Mode was much of what kept me playing OR2 for so long in the first place. I wanted to unlock everything! The lack of the challenge mode in this one makes me doubt how long I'll really want to play the same basic modes.
2) Handling seemed "dumbed down" somehow.
In the whole demo, I think I only hit one spot where I had to brake, let alone drift. I'm sure the other courses are more involved, but the car's handling in general felt way too easy.
3) The (what seems to be) lack of differences in each car's handling also added to my doubts of longevity/replayability. Where are the cars' stats??
I just might stick with OR2 for now.

The demo only allows you about enough time to saunter into stage two... trust me, you've be drifting and braking a bit on the harder courses. Having played the PS2 version to death then I can't feel too much difference, although the 360 analogs are a lot better naturally. I miss the original soundtracks that were available in C2C though.

Currently top 20 in the world for Goals B-E, so that was a worthwhile afternoon spent playing heh...

I really really enjoyed OutRun 2 and Coast 2 Coast 2006.

I wish this had been released on the US PS3 market as I'm still weary about buying big-ticket XBLA downloads due to the fact that they can't usually be transferred and played properly to a new 360 that doesn't hold your "DRM License" and often they won't play outside of demo mode if you're not online with your XBLA account (or they simply won't play at all even if you are).

BUT, since I don't have any non US PSN accounts with the means to purchase from other stores that have it ,and I had seen a few online reviewers give it the thumbs up, I figured this would be a good reason to power up my 360 ... which in semi-related commentary is currently waiting patiently until July until I can use the DRM License Transfer tool again so I can play Vigilante 8, Braid, Castle Crashers and other games that have DRM Transfer issues on new consoles.

I digress.

Spent a few hours with this one yesterday, and in comparison to the most recent OutRun title - Coast 2 Coast on PS2 and PSP (was it on regular XBOX in the US??) - this is most definitely a stripped down, light version of that ... and while Online mode which is my biggest personal draw in this version was never really outstanding in 2006 ... they haven't done much to improve on the formula.

The match-making is currently really lacking and I hope that they improve it in an update. Currently it will auto-drop you in lobbies that are mid-race with NO options to sort for races that are "waiting to begin" ... this leaves you in the likely position to be waiting up-wards of 15 + minutes to race with these players if they've picked "15 track" race ... and the likelihood of them actually playing again is probably pretty slim.

As mentioned by other DP members ... there are some buggy online glitches .... sometimes the red direction arrows that block off a branching road selection don't show up and you wind up driving down a road selection that throws you into "limbo" and you get stuck.

Unfortunately, the game also suffers from (but can't really be blamed for) user "drop-out" syndrome in races ... if you're particularly good at OutRun 2 and you break ahead of the pack online, expect the rest of the racers to QUIT on you one by one mid game at which point the online race ends giving you no credit for being in 1st place or winning.

The control for the cars does seem to be slicker and more balanced in this version, but I also noticed before I shut it down for the night that the default difficulty is set to "VERY EASY" ... I'm interested in changing that today to see if I get a greater scope of difficulty on drifting/sliding and a greater speed reward for maneuvering correctly through S curves, etc.

Also noticed that ALL online races appear to be "player" / non ranked ... which strikes me as pretty strange. The game HAS leader boards, why don't online races count toward that? My guess is that SUMO couldn't think of a way to handle how mid-race quits would count toward online ranking.

Overall, this is a mixed bag ... at its core, it's still has some of the same things that I love about this franchise ... but as a NEW entry, it's lacking some polish and well-thought-out re-design that is typical of bringing a title to XBLA. Seems like a pretty loose & fast port to me, HOWEVER, the price is certainly right at 800 and for anybody looking for a quick OutRun fix this should do if you're willing to deal with a functional but slightly less-than-passable online mode.

Anyone else download this? So far I think the music is severely downgraded from Coast 2 Coast, not just in terms of quantity but the quality of each song seems worse - like they are tinnier and are overly compressed or something. Also, this game hurts my hands. Seriously. I stopped playing videogames for 2 or 3 weeks after the night I downloaded this. Played it again today, but just one 15-minute go and then I thought I should stop.

For anyone that played them extensively on the original Xbox, the 360's emulation of the two is nothing but annoyances with various problems like frame rate drops and long load times. However, I highly recommend anyone to pick them up both, especially if they own a original Xbox.

The music sucks, they only kept the modern music and the redone versions of the classic songs. Wouldn't surprise me if they were low quality since they appear to have had issues getting this down to a acceptable download size (Wish they'd abolish XBLA size limits entirely already). But I've been using the custom soundtrack feature of the 360 and using music that doesn't suck (The original Outrun songs that haven't been retouched in order to ruin them, the Turbo Outrun songs, and the music from the first SuperNes Top Gear), so I wouldn't really know. Or perhaps you always used the 1986 original versions of the songs like I did in Outrun 2/Coast2Coast and are finding you really don't care for the remixed versions?

I don't understand how this game could be killing your hands. It doesn't require much steering input if your trying to be as smooth as possible to rub off as little speed as possible, you only need to quickly downshift and upshift again to initiate a drift on average maybe 1-2 times per stage, and your finger is keeping the accelerator down constantly, so I'm puzzled.

Does the 360's triggers just not work well with your hands? I thought the Dreamcast's triggers weren't exactly where I'd prefer them for example, and my hands would get uncomfortable playing something like Metropolis Street Racer (I thought everything on the DC's controller was just slightly off compared to what would be comfortable for my hands). But thankfully for me, that isn't the case with the Xbox controller S or the 360's pads.

I haven't seen that problem and I was playing the game 2 days ago. What sucks is there's still an issue with the multiplayer lobbies where the lobby stays open long after the host quits, so there's nobody in the lobby to start the game. One person with enough brains to figure out what's going on usually has to start a new game on their own and recruit everybody who was in the lobby via game invites. This works for a couple games till the host quits and the cycle starts all over again. They really need to fix this, it's essentially broken.

But thankfully for me, that isn't the case with the Xbox controller S or the 360's pads.

Firstly, the music: its a shame that the original Outrun1 versions aren't there but in the PS2 Coast 2 Coast game, I used the Outrun 1 and 2 versions of the songs about equally - and almost ignored all the other songs. However, in the Xbox360 version, I have to increase the music volume a lot over the sound effects volume and the songs don't sound as clear as they do on the PS2. I think it is just over-compression - I should try out the PS2 version again but I said I'd never play it again since my save file got corrupted and I lost all my progress.

Secondly - the Xbox 360 controller is far and away my favourite for 3D games. I've played hours of Project Gotham Racing 4, and it only starts to hurt my hands when its far past the time I should have stopped. I think the issue with Outrun Online Arcade is that I now have discovered manual gears and with triggers (rather than the button for PS2) I have to constantly hold down the right trigger and that starts to aggrevate my hand and arm. I did try once with the buttons for acc/brake and shoulders for gears, but that was when my hand was already hurting so I should try that method again.

It's relatively easy and you have two options.

Gameshare with a friend that owns it in a territory where it's been released. Or import a points card from the region whose PSN marketplace you wish to download it from and create a free PSN account for that region.

PSN point cards are locked to the territory they're sold in so you need a points card from the region you wish to purchase the game from that has the game available. You can't enter a North American points card into a United Kingdom PSN account, and North American credit cards can't be utilized to make a purchase on PSN from another region.
