I'd like to go ahead and buy both of these but looks like I'm only going to be able to get one at a time. I've never played either of the series. As far as games I like, I love the "old school" type RPG's. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, and Earthbound are a few I really like. Not long ago, I finished Dragon Quest VIII and absolutely loved it. I'm nearly finished with Dragon Warrior IV and ready to pick up on one of these titles after I'm finished. Which would you guys recommend? They both look really fun and interesting.

Maybe you should start from Tales of Phantasia. ther very first one. It's extremely good.
Also the first Lunar on Sega CD. the rootz :)

In my opinion, Lunar is the better game. Not that ToD is complete ass, it's just somewhat less enjoyable.

Tales of Destiny is an excellent game IMO. One of my my favorites in the series and I like it MUCH more than ToD2 on the playstation, however ToD 2 is still a great game.

As far as the Lunar games go... I LOVE both the Sega CD versions but when it comes to the Playstation all I have played is the remake of Lunar 2. I have to say I thought Lunar 2 was complete crap. They changed several core elements that made the game FAR less enjoyable for me. If the Lunar 1 port is anything like the Lunar 2 port then I say get Tales of Destiny.

There hasn't been a good Lunar game yet. If you want to get a crappy overrated RPG, then any of the Lunar games needs to be your first choice. The coolest thing in that game was the twist in the middle of the story which you really didn't think was going to happen nor even think about that at all. Other than that the storyline was extremely generic about some lame moron named Alex who wanted to be a Dragon Master and some hot chick who can somehow use healing powers and happens to look like a goddess. Oh yeah, wasn't hard to figure that one out from the very beginning of the game(trust me, that is definitely not a spoiler since you have to be a retard not to realize it at the start of the game.)

Also. Lunar for the Sega CD and Lunar for the Saturn(JPN only) and PSX are the exact same game. It's just that the Saturn and PSX version have better graphics.

Now Tales of Destiny is a great game. The PS2 remake is much better because it's the same game, but better. Unfortunately no one can read what's happening unless you know Japanese, which is why I still like the original best.

Anyways. My vote goes for Tales of Destiny. I've played most of the Tales games and it's still my second favorite. Amazing music, amazing storyline, very good gameplay, most memorable characters in the series.

I'll admit I haven't played ToD1, but I've played almost every other Tales game, and they're just as chock full of RPG-cliche as Lunar, so I think that's a strike against both of them.

Tales games are good, don't get me wrong (although the early ones are much much better... after Symphonia they really turned into mass-produced drivel) but I think the two Lunar games are great for old-school RPG'ing as well. I never played the CD versions, and I really enjoyed both Silver Star Story and Eternal Blue for the PSX. They both have great, long, anime cutscenes and music.

im a Lunar guy. ToD is awesome but i liked ToP alittle better.
both silverstar and blue where amazing games. the psx ver of the games are alittle less glitchy and a little better looking but if you can find the sega cd's then go for it.

ToP is hopefully comming to psp with full voice and fmv how it was originally intended. so maybe it will make it a better game.

This statement is full of fail.

To anyone who has actually sat down and played the different ports will realize they are not the same (besides the graphics which is obvious.)

Based on what you've described of your tastes, you may be turned off by the unconventional battle system present in the Tales series. If you want a more "old school" experience, Lunar is definitely the way to go.

However, if you want me to recommend what I personally like better, I'd go with Tales of Destiny. Lunar is fairly good, but not remarkable and it's too long for its own good. I played the game a couple times over, and each time I had a lot of fun for the first 20 or so hours but I had to drag myself through the rest of the game. And the battles actually get MORE repetitive towards the end of the game. I don't know if the developers were getting lazy or what, but you'll encounter the same groups of enemies over and over and over, more so than any locations earlier in the game.

Lunar's story is way better!

The game's all mentioned in your first post are turn based RPGs. So is Lunar, Tales is more action oriented. Lunar also features a classic story and a very likable cast of characters. The game may seem cliche by today's standards but only because so many RPGs have copied it since. Oh yeah, and the translation is hilarious.

The other question is which game is the better deal? Both games are rather pricey now. So if either is a good financial score you may want to just snag that copy as you won't regret playing either title.

If you like old school RPGs, the first two Lunar are kind of heavy weight in this category. You will have a blast playing it.

So I would suggest Lunar:SSS over Tales of Destiny.

Thanks for the comments. They both sound pretty fun. Which ever one I find for a good price, I'll snatch it.

If you're eventually going to get both, then it really shouldn't matter which one you pick up first. I mean, since you plan on getting both anyway.

As already stated, Lunar gives you traditional turn based battles were as ToD is more action oriented. I'd say go with whatever you're in the mood for, for your first pick.

Uhmm, no. Lunar wasn't breaking any new ground back then and games afterwards weren't copying 'Lunar' specifically. All japanese RPGs are full of cliches. It's more of how they go about it (and the production value too).

Lunar all the way. One of the things that I love so much about Lunar, especially when I first played it so many years ago. The title itself Lunar, is more than a name but the actual setting. I always found that so great about it. Always wanted to visit the earth in the game.

Tales of Destiny is a big fav of mine, but Lunar gets the nod here. IMHO both games are great, and should each bring something different to the table. I vote Lunar first, but TOD still is a game worthy of your playtime.

Lunar is a much better game. ToD is the only game in the Tales series that I've played and didn't like enough to finish.

Easily Lunar, both of them, WAY over ToD.

I still prefer the original Sega CD releases. The good thing Lunar:SSSC did was add some nice anime cutscenes and expanded the storyline. IMO, the music is way worse, the map is complete ass and I just feel the overall the graphics (especially in battle) could have been way better.

Say what you want, but I somehow liked the Lunar:EBC more BECAUSE it kept the same music (although the PSX version is not as smooth as the original or the Saturn versions), they at least made the map closer to the original (though still not as good. I actually preferred walking from palce to place and encountering random enemies along the way). The game also has nice anime scenes...but I feel the original Sega CD animes show off better what the system could do in the right hands...

Even though I have some gripes with the remakes, I still would recommend them....AFTER the Sega CD originals :)

Do you have any good comparison links? I had the PS version for a little while and I don't remember it being worst than the SegaCD version, but then again I didn't beat either of them..

Silver Star has random battles, the complete games you can dodge battles. The complete games also have better graphics. Overall, same crappy game(talking about Silver Star.)

I've only played Lunar Eternal Blue on the PSX so I can't say how the Sega CD one is(where as I've played both Silver Star and Silver Star Complete.) However. I will say Eternal Blue Complete is a grind, atleast what I played of it(which honestly wasn't that far past the first boss.) Easily an hour of grinding so I could actually stand two hits against the first boss. I clearly remember that's the reason why I didn't even give the second a chance, and the first one already sucked, though I did beat that one.

Don't get me wrong, even after the things I said, I still liked the remakes. Some people's minds you just aren't going to change about the games, but Lunar (and especially Lunar:EB) will always be two of my favorite RPGs ever and two of the best games ever crafted.

As for more direct comparison on the versions, best place to check out is Lunar-net.com Best place for all around info. on all the games in the series...
